S E OM I N J O O

female, twenty-six, classless, secretary.

BY MOST STANDARDS, Seo Minjoo has led a rather posh life. In a long line of prominent Earth Class figures, Minjoo is a deviation from the Seo family norm. And, of course, there is a reason for this: Minjoo's father, Seo Jaebeom, chose to marry for true love rather than lineage, and married a classless woman. As fate would have it, she was a carrier of the gene for the affinity, and the two had six beautiful Earth Class prodigy sons... and then Minjoo was born.

Losing her mother at a young age left Minjoo the only classless member of the Seo family, putting her in a slightly uncomfortable position. On one hand, she's the (somewhat) treasured only daughter and at least half of her brothers don't dislike her, and on the other hand, she has to live in the shadow of everyone else in the family for the entirety of her life, including her twelve-year-old half-brother, and he can't even remember to use deodorant.

It's not even like Minjoo is incompetent — by classless standards, Minjoo has lived well. She's been a filial daughter, she's helped host more dinner parties than there are stars in the sky, she has a university degree... but it means nothing, because she doesn't have the affinity. Which is why she's working for the Regime now — if she doesn't have the affinity, her grandfather told her, the least she could do for the family is seduce some well-off member of the Earth Class and at least give birth to a son with the affinity. But, she tells herself, if she's here, she might as well do her job well, and those files aren't going to organize themselves.

D OJ I H O O N

male, 33, fire class, ethics instructor.

IF TO BURN with love / were the same thing as to die / long before now
/ a thousand times I would have died / a thousand times over.
Or so the poets say. Do Jihoon, Fire Class, graduated top of his year, seems to burn with love for only one thing, which is assigning essays to his students. Of course he does — all of the days he takes off from teaching have to have some excuse, so he assigns yet another research or opinion paper and calls it an independent study day. Does he care that you woke up at the ass crack of dawn to make it to his classroom at 7 AM only to find a piece of paper taped to the door saying that class was cancelled? No.

There is, perhaps, some irony in the fact that the boy who once wanted to be Protector of the Regime ended up teaching ethics. And eighteen-year-old Do Jihoon may have thought that the affinity was all about flashiness and power, but thirty-three-year-old Do Jihoon can't find it in himself to get out of bed some mornings because he remembers the day, at 6:31 AM, that Do Jihwan, favored to win the Trials, was announced dead. He had — they all had — been outsmarted by the short kid who'd spent every waking hour in the library.

Fire Class prodigy? Would be better off as a trainer, as an assistant to one of the Council? Perhaps. Jihoon doesn't care where he maybe should be — he's where he's chosen to be. And if that means ditching his own class to sip a white chocolate mocha with three pumps of vanilla, so be it.

Time. Power. Money. On her long journey up the ladder of
chaos, Kate Knightley has learned to value these three things
very, very well. Ruthless and meticulous, she commands a
presence when she walks into a room - a trait she inherited
from working with Councilwoman Thakkur, her personal idol.
Respecting the regime, she does not tolerate any rebellion.
As for foolishness, she's very handoff. If you do something
idiotic, you deal with it type of attitude. There's no running
to her for help. She's here to succeed.

There was once a day where Kate Knightley wanted to be a
Protector. There was nothing more she wanted. Even when
it came to the ideals of family, she knew that could all wait
when the chance to become powerful was in reach. But life
had different plans and the one time she let herself take her
eyes off the prize, she lost it all. The sponsorships, the trainer,
everything. And what would be a blessing in anyone's life at
the right time became more of a curse. And as soon as she could
she walked away from that part of her life. Especially when
he did what she did not - he participated in the previous
trials - and he died. She was foolish, she dealt with those
consequences. And she would never, ever repeat that mistake
again.

L E EK Y U N G A H

female, twenty-six, water class, nurse.

MANY QUESTIONED WHY Kyungah would become a nurse. Graduating as one of the best Water Class trainees of her year, it seemed to many a waste of potential. Treating the bumps and bruises of trainees appears trivial compared to the things that she could be doing instead, but this is what Kyungah has chosen for herself.

To her colleagues, Kyungah may not seem the type to take on this kind of role — it's up for debate as to whether anyone has ever seen or heard her laugh. With a no-nonsense, all-business attitude and a hell of a glare, Kyungah isn't exactly the type to make friends at work. But that's not what she's here to do, after all.

She's here for the patients, and she takes her job seriously. She's here because maybe no one has able to control their affinity enough to use it for complicated medical uses, but she can make blood clot faster than the body's natural healing capabilities, but she can siphon drips and samples without contaminating them, but she can bathe a patient no matter how mobile they are. Her class makes her a better nurse, and she's here because she wants to help people. So of course she'll put on a smile for them, try to help put them a little more at ease when they're hurting — she's here to help them, not to please anyone.

Archer Jackson does not need you to tell him he's talented. He
does not need you to say "thanks" for accepting you to train...
He knows. Archer is a brutal and very disciplinary, but his trainees
know it pays off when they go through the rounds to be selected
into the trials. Some people take his silence to heart and deem
him to be heartless and cold. And Archer, he really does not give
two fux if you think it. He believes in keeping personal life and
business separate and if you don't do that when you're training,
you're monumentally screwed.

Archer remembers the last Trials. Enthralled at the power that
displayed, he used to sit in front of the television with his too
young peers. Despite his talent, he knew that it was bad luck
when it came to his age. He would not be able to participate.
However, as he mastered his talents, he realized that a trainee
and their talent is only half the battle. It is the trainer who wins
half the battle. Victory could still be his. But just like every
trainer, it's going to take someone to not only impress him with
talent but discipline.

Selene Croft has always been a fighter. Never one for discipline,
she admittedly had a harder time mastering her craft. It was not
from her lack of trying or disinterest, but from her stubbornness
and temper. Having come from a rough background, she learned
early on that you have to fend for yourself because no one, and
she means no one, will do it for you. Her determination quickly
drew attention from her teachers and while she was still in the
school, some trainers wished there was a circumstance to train
the likes of her. But, the regime has a habit of not letting great
talent go to waste and when it came to the decision to go home,
she was offered the perfect job to take out her frustrations - top
security.

Selene Croft jumped at the chance. She knew that there were
the few times that her control just... slipped. It was better to
risk it in the regime than in the outside world where if she was
caught, she was dead. After all, she's seen now what they do to
those who get caught and there is no better motivation to act
appropriately. But Selene is not about to suck up to her higher
superiors either. Barely getting by with her rebellious nature,
Selene knows protection of the regime is vital if people like her
are to survive. However, the means at which she is willing to go
is further than most which leaves her the burning desire to learn
that which is forbidden - all ends to a means right?

HAN MINHYUN earth / trainer / 26 / male

Maybe Minhyun's tactic for teaching isn't the best — generally people don't do well when thrown into challenging situations — but his motto is “practice makes perfect” and he'll gladly help someone by explaining it differently or going through the various degrees of difficulty with them. He makes things challenging for everyone, but he also sets his expectations low enough that nobody feels pressured to be perfect. He makes sure that the trainees know that he won't get annoyed at them if they mess up.

Minhyun also has a habit of ‘adopting’ trainees. If he comes across a trainee who needs a lot of help, or who's particularly small and cute, he'll ‘adopt’ them (wrap them in hugs constantly, offer them extra help and keep a very close eye on them lest one of the other trainers try to steal them away from him).

01. TWENTY-EIGHT 02. AIR CLASS 03. SECRETARY

What is Tae-hee, a woman who spent ten years training for the regime, doing as a secretary, you ask? Well, when your greatest strength (affinity-wise) is that you can turn the air conditioner down by a whopping three degrees, there's not many jobs you can snatch. Besides, as it turns out, Tae-hee has a knack for completing mindless administrative tasks that require little to no brainpower.

It's not that Tae-hee is stupid. She just doesn't care enough to try. Sure, Tae-hee hates paperwork as much as the next person, but if she's getting paid to do it, then she really can't complain, especially since it's all temporary. I mean — with a face as pretty as hers, there's no way that Tae-hee isn't going to find a way to wrap some wealthy, high-affinity man around her little finger.

She's just killing time until then, that's all.

YOO · HYUN-SEOK ❞ ─── 26 & maculine & straight & classless secretary

Hyun-seok has never really doubted his place among the bottom of the barrel ─ and really, that's probably being a tad dramatic. In all honesty, Hyun-seok is just, well, average. He went to school, graduated with a liberal arts degree that hasn't done him all that well, and he's lowkey the family disappointment (even if his mom would never say that outloud). But he isn't upset about where he is or the who or the what. He's just trying to get by and so far, he hasn't been doing all that bad.

The one person who Hyun-seok can thank for his success up to this point is formidable grandfather. Once upon a time, Yoo Youngjin had been a rather adept earth class trainer at the regime, retiring only rather recently. It was the good word of his grandfather that landed Hyun-seok the job ─ and it was his grandfather's relentless support that got him through any hardship or tough spot. And well, Hyun-seok may have picked up more than his grandfather's work ethic and good-nature.

Puns and good-natured humor was what really connected Hyun-seok to his grandfather and the two have been rather inseparable ever since Hyun-seok had been a young boy. Even when his mother would roll her eyes or his father would sigh in exasperation at Hyun-seok's antics, his grandfather was always the one there to laugh ─ which is a good thing considering the basis of who Hyun-seok is. Let's just hope that his messy disposition doesn't get him fired.
