Welcome to the Title Hunt Quarterly Challenge!

Duration: January 1 - March 31

Completion Levels:
Level 1: One title for each category.
Level 2: Two titles for each category with no repeats.
Level 3: Three titles for each category with no repeats.

Instructions:
Below are five general categories. Your goal is read a book that features a title that would fit in one of the five categories.

Books cannot be repeated in multiple categories and you cannot use the same item more than once. For example, you cannot use two covers that feature dukes in the "Nobility" category.

All books must be read in the duration of the challenge. Please do not start any books you plan to use before January 1st.

If you have any questions, ask in this thread!

Categories:
Title of Nobility

Single Word Title

Verb in the Title
(Any tense will do!)

Place in the Title or Series Title
(It can be fictional! You'll probably have better luck with series titles than actual book titles.)

ABCs
(Titles have to start with consecutive letters. So your first book can start with an M, but if you choose to read more than one title in the category, your other books have to start with L and N or N and O or K and L. You want the titles to be a string of 3 consecutive letters in the alphabet - KLM, LMN, MNO. You can ignore articles.)

Feel free to plan your books out in advance or fill in as you go!

Oh, challenge is ON. Now I have to complete this category using no dukes at all. NO DUKES AT ALL. Take that, historical romance title hyperinflation.

message 9: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina West | 52 comments Question: for the nobility category, does the title have to refer to someone who is actually nobility? For example, I'm thinking of the King's Captive book that was just mentioned in a sale on SBTB. From the description, I believe that's the guy's name, rather than him being an actual king.

Amanda | 22 comments This looks such fun! I just have a couple questions about Titles of Nobility:

~Would "Gentleman" count as a title? As in The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue (Guide, #1) by Mackenzi Lee ?

~Can you have both male and female versions of the same rank in your 3? As in one book with Prince and another with Princess?

Appreciate the help! :)

message 24: by Tuuli (new)

Tuuli | 79 comments I personally would say no to the first and yes to the second - a "gentleman" being a man of upper class but not necessarily of nobility... but definitely could do both prince and princess!

Count: 15/15 books

Categories:
Title of Nobility Look, no dukes!

The Outcast Prince, by Shona Husk (finished 1/14; urban fantasy/fairy romance, 3 stars).

Viscount Vagabond, by Loretta Chase (finished 1/19; Chase's second book - from 1988! - is not as much fun for me as her more recent ones - too predictable, didn't like the characters as much - but the writing is still great and the Regency setting is well done, so 3.5 stars. I was surprised to see it in my library's new e-book acquisitions).

Mrs Queen Takes the Train, by William Kuhn (finished 2/1; rather slow but enjoyable story about Queen Elizabeth going walkabout and the Queen's staff who go after her. If you like The Crown, you might like this - 3 stars).

Single Word Title

Temporary, by Sarina Bowen and Sarah Mayberry (finished 1/25; very enjoyable romance between an Australian playboy and a temp employee dealing with an estate - 4 stars).

Hunger, by Roxane Gay (finished 3/12; Amazing memoir about hunger for love, acceptance, food, and safety, 5 stars. But reading about her rape and sense of shame at age 12 was heartbreaking).

Tinderbox, by Rachel Grant (finished 3/10; romance/thriller with a great African setting and interesting details about paleoanthropology; but romance, characters - daddy issues, geez - and suspense were a bit over the top for me...so 3 stars).

Verb in the Title
(Any tense will do!)

Now That You Mention It, by Kristan Higgins (finished 1/5; solid 4 stars - especially liked descriptions of island life off coast of Maine)

Nothing Stays Buried, by P.J. Tracy (finished 1/9 and used for other challenge too!; mystery in Minneapolis & MN farmland, with a serial killer and drug cartels - 4 stars).

Sing, Unburied, Sing, by Jesmyn Ward (finished 1/12; graphic and heart-wrenching and beautifully written story of African-American family in Mississippi, lit. fic. with magical realism; 5 stars).

Place in the Title or Series Title

Witches of Lychford, by Paul Cornell, along with The Lost Child of Lychford and A Long Day in Lychford, since they're novellas. (Finished 1/22; suspenseful urban fantasy set in small town England - with very diverse and interesting characters - 4.5 stars).

The House on Tradd Street, by Karen White (finished 1/21; paranormal thriller set in historic Charleston, SC - 3.5 stars for plot/romance. Setting and house details fun!).

Lake Silence, by Anne Bishop (finished 3/19; paranormal thriller set in Finger Lakes region of upstate NY in an alternate future - this is #6 of 'The Others' series, which I highly recommend - but don't start with this one. Solid 4 stars).

ABCs

The Grave's a Fine and Private Place, by Alan Bradley (finished 2/5; 9th in the mystery series and although I still love the characters, the mystery and setting didn't hold my interest as much in this volume as in some of the others in the series - so 3.5 stars).

The Horseman, by Charlotte Nash (finished 1/26; excellent Australian romance with really interesting characters and setting, 5 stars).

It's All Relative, by A.J. Jacobs (finished 1/30; entertaining non-fiction about genealogy, family, and DNA research - solid 4 stars).

Laure | 66 comments For the ABCs category, would it be alright to have titles starting with Y, Z and then loop back around to A (YZA)? Or is the only acceptable combo for Y and Z to be XYZ?

Chanel wrote: "Does Death Below Stairs count as a Place?"

I would say no. We're looking for more of a geographic marker, even if it's a fictional town.

I checked the definition of "lady" and read this "a woman of superior social position, especially one of noble birth." So I'll count it!

Is there any love story in it, Critterbee? I am loving the mystery-romance stuff lately...

message 48: by Critterbee❇ (new)

Critterbee❇ (critterbee) | 248 comments There are a few bits about Captain Lacey's love life, but in the tradition of Jennifer Ashley Gardner, past facts are a bit elusive. It just hooks you and makes you want to read more in the series though!

Last night in the book chat, I remember someone saying that the romance really starts in book three of the series. I am sorry but I don't remember who said that!
