Here are your October 2018 Mini Challenges!

RULES

** Books DO NOT all have to be mysteries. You can use any genres.

** A book can only be used once for this challenge, but can be used for other challenges (Seasonal, World Trip, Ultimate, etc.).

** You DO NOT have to choose books in advance, and can change your mind at any time if you do.

** Do as many as you are able and have fun!

October 1 is International Day for the Elderly: Read a book with an elderly character.

October is National Scrapbooking Month, and October 6 is World Card Making Day: Read a book featuring paper crafts such as card making, scrapbooking, bookmaking, or decoupage.

October 1 is National Homemade Cookies Day, October 12 is Cookbook Launch Day, October 14 is National Dessert Day and October 21 is National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day: Read a book featuring some sort of dessert on the cover (cake, cookies, éclair, Jell-O, pie, pudding, sundae, etc).

October 17 is Wear Something Gaudy Day: Read a book with a “gaudy” or ugly cover (obviously, this one will be quite subjective as some may like covers others do not).

Patrizia | 236 comments As usual, I have problems understanding one of the foreseen tasks ... One of these covers can be considered "gaudy"? According to my dictionary "gaudy" could be translated as colored ...
The Peppermint Mocha Murder (A Chocolate Whisperer Mystery, #5) by Colette London
Murder with Cinnamon Scones (Daisy's Tea Garden Mystery #2) by Karen Rose Smith

Patrizia, I would choose more "volgare, vistoso, pacchiano, accesso"... wordreference is giving me those words, more than colored.

message 15: by Patrizia (last edited Sep 28, 2018 02:59AM) (new)

Patrizia | 236 comments Ok, thank you. I have a mini-dictionary... In reality it told me "vivace" that, in relation to a cover, can be understood as very colorful ...
:-(

message 16: by Marisa, Cozy Mysteries Assistant Moderator (new)

Marisa (moretta) | 3888 comments Mod
"Vivace" could be like "flashy" (Geek clothes in J.D Robb's novels ;) )

message 17: by Patrizia (last edited Sep 28, 2018 03:14AM) (new)

Patrizia | 236 comments In fact I did not understand why in the same task the cover could be "gaudy" and "ugly" ... If gaudy means "vivace, colorato", it's the opposite of ugly!
Ok, I'm going to hunt for the right cover.

Patrizia, I am a cover lover and usually pick my covers based on how much the cover attracts me. Ugly covers to me are ones that are not eye-catching. As Heather said, this is very subjective. I chose a black cover with part of a woman's face with fly away hair. To me that is an ugly cover. I might find something else as I continue to search.

Gaudy: extravagantly bright or showy, typically so as to be tasteless; garish, tawdry; not pleasing to the eye.

Does that help?
