Jessica | 35 comments I'd like to nominate: Infinite Jest

message 52: by Marcos (new)

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments Well, I wasn't going to say anything. I learned from "Tolstoy and the Purple Chair: My Year of Magical Reading" that it's better no to criticize a friend's favorite book. :-) Buuut... since you've already started an interesting discussion, here go my two cents.

Paulo Coelho is a Brazilian author and, as you know, a worldwide bestselling phenomenon. I might be happy to see a Brazilian author there, as well as nominated here, and second it. But I'm not seconding it.

About the first ten reviews of this book in GR are very negative on the book, and I'm on that side. We Brazilians had this discussion first, as the man became a success here before going international. Like in other places, people either love his books or really don't like them. I even bought and tried to read some of them, attempting to do what Cheryl will, see it herself, but wasn't at all attracted and decided not to go on. DNF.

Just sharing a point of view. Big sales do not necessarily mean quality. Read the reviews, some are objective and good. And I guess that had I gone further reading reviews, I'd have found many favourable as well.

lethe | 102 comments I think The Alchemist is best enjoyed when you are a teen. After that, more likely than not you will start seeing it for the load of drivel that it is ;P

But maybe we should wait with this discussion until it has been chosen as BOTM.

message 54: by Daisy (new)

Daisy I'll second The Princess Bride, would love to get around to reading a book as well-loved as that one. There is always such good suggestions in this group! <3

Thea | 4 comments I second The Hate You Give and The Road.

message 56: by Stephanie (new) - added it

Stephanie | 103 comments I second The Road.

Hannah I second Station Eleven and Interview with the Vampire

daniela (daniela_nieblina) I'd like to nominate
Astrophysics for People in a Hurry, becasue it's been nominated before and it piqued my interest.
The Girl with All the Gifts because it's sequel was nominated for the goodreads awards.
And
The Hate U Give, which is obviously going to win. I mean, I've never seen this many nominations of one book.

Kimberly Peterson | 201 comments I'll second Atonement

Jennifer Drees | 12 comments I second a gentleman in Moscow.

message 64: by Joan (new) - rated it 3 stars

Joan | 7 comments Daisy wrote: "I'll second The Princess Bride, would love to get around to reading a book as well-loved as that one. There is always such good suggestions in this group! <3"

The Princess Bride is one of my all time favourite books ever! I love it!

message 66: by Marcos (last edited Dec 13, 2017 10:44AM) (new)

Marcos Kopschitz | 1766 comments Well, not many immediate wishes to read this month. No offense, nominators! :-) That's just for me.

So far, I'll second The Underground Railroad, this one is on my list since before the Pulitzer. I've seen interviews with the author, who seemed a very interesting person to me.

And one that caught my eye and I'll second as well is Midnight at the Bright Ideas Bookstore, I like bookish books and of course bibliomisteries.

However, Atonement is a good book, by Ian McEwan, a very interesting author. Not seconding just because other books by this author are now on my TBR list. I think most of you would like it.

message 67: by Kyra (last edited Dec 14, 2017 06:35AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars
