The writing in The Prophet hooked me from the beginning. The imagery was excellent and I loved the description of the Autumn leaves bleeding colour in the preface. After the intro, I was definitely going to finish.Coming from the UK I have very little affinity to 'American' football, although I have a reasonable idea of gameplay through various films (lol). So I found the whole football thing tedious in places. Having said this, it was more than compensated by the characters and their battles with their past and each other, which were explored really well. This, the small town setting and the mystery were what kept me reading. The book definitely had real atmosphere. And I didnt see the solution coming!
I would definitely read other books by this author. I can respect that others would get much more out of the football action. For me, skimming over some of the passages didn't detract from my enjoyment overall.
I seem to remember a buddy or group read about The Prophet, which is what brought the book to my attention. Must try and find it...

I didn't care for the sections on football either. It's a game I've never really understood.
The book was discussed in the SAI King Recommends group.

I'm glad you liked it. I really want it on my wall, so am working to finish the second round of tasks.
Janice wrote: "I've read a few of Koryta's books and he's rapidly becoming a favourite. The conflict between the brothers was tense.... Oh, you're right.. that's the discussion where I first discovered this book! Off to have a peek. : )

Re The Outsider It was excellent. The pace and characters are typically King style. It's a slow creepy burn until events and twists really get going, but then I like that!I should have learned by now that I shouldnt get too close to the people he creates, but those little enamouring details get me involved every time. SK warns the reader that things are going to get worse, but I never believe him and get gut wrenched every time the roller coaster ride starts.
I know I'm being a bit cryptic but I dont want to spoil anything for you ; ) The book did not disappoint...!
Margo wrote: "That is brilliant news that it is set in July! I had given up on books set during the summer."I planned to read it for 'published in 2018' so it was a nice surprise to find it set in July! I was so excited! I get to read another recently published book.

I'm only about an hour in, and I'm already feeling quite anxious. If this is a slow burn, how am I going to feel at the end? ACK!
Sarah wrote: "Agggh! I need to buy The Outsider. I'm hearing lots of good stuff about it."I'm loving it so far.
Ah! I am totally skint at the moment and it's still £10 here. I can't justify. Fingers crossed it will come down in price soon. Or, I'll try source it from the library. That said, as I'm reading slowly at the moment that might not be an option.
Annerlee - I just finished The Outsider and loved it! I'm glad you enjoyed it too! I see that you put it under Leo for set in July. I never even thought of that. I just put it under Cancer for horror. I have more books that fit easily into the horror slot though. I may have to change it!

I bought "W" at a garage sale, just before the author passed away. It is the only one I own. I keep thinking that I should give it away, but then, I think - what if we get a challenge with a letter in the title or a book title that begins with "W", and there it sits on my book shelf still... Have you read the rest of the series?

Probably me... Will check on my laptop later, currently on a tiny screen so its hard to keep an overview
Cherie wrote: "I bought "W" at a garage sale, just before the author passed away. It is the only one I own. This group has a lot to answer for (lol)
I read Q is for Quarry as a freebie (it was in a pile of books in the ladies toilets at work, for borrowing as required... I know..). Anyway, I liked the 80s feel and enjoyed the main character (Kinsey) so ended up reading the whole series. One of the few series I've ever followed through. Having said that, I haven't read the last in the series Y is for Yesterday, I feel too sad that it's the last in the series and Sue Grafton didn't quite make the end of the alphabet : (
Will have to steel myself at some point.
I love spending time with Kinsey - I love her attitude. I also love franically searching for a telephone box to make an emergency call, cross referencing at the library and searching out information the old fashioned way. Reminds me of a bygone era. I'm probably just old..
Annerlee wrote: "Ha ha. I also own multiple books that 'might come in handy for a YLTO challenge'. This group has a lot to answer for (lol)"Tell me about it *looks at her bookshelves*...

That's it exactly Renee. I'm close to tears thinking about it.. how silly is that. I was dreading reaching 'z' as it was, but this feels even worse 😢
Glad you understand.
