I read this book in 2005 but I believe it is much older.

The Hero is half native andd has "tawny eyes". And possibly keeps a wolf pet.
Hero meets heroine when she is dressed as a warrior but is strangely attracted to her and that confuses him.

There are two scenes where a suitor from the same tribe as the heroine would watch her wash in the river, heroine knows this and convinces her friend to wash naked so H's suitor would find her friend more attractive.

That's all I can remember. In the back of the book there is a map of the "big horn mountains" or "little big horn mountains".
