Petrik (petrikleo) | 1546 comments I'm on Reaper's Gale right now and I'm dreading reading RotCG hahahahaa. We'll see how it goes with that one.. If I can't finish it, I think I may have to rely on summaries of the remainign four books instead.

message 4102: by Miche (new)

Miche | 3279 comments I liked RotCG. Stonewielder was the one that I liked least. Part of it was my expectations. I thought the book was going to follow one direction and follow another. However, I can't deny that his writing improved immensely.

I truly enjoyed Orb Sceptre Throne.

I liked RotCG as well. Orb Spectre Throne was well written too. I think part of the attraction of Orb Spectre is it helps explain quite a few things that SE has only ever hinted at. As Miche said, ICE's writing has improved a lot.

Petrik (petrikleo) | 1546 comments Wish me luck that I can make it through RotCG and be interested enough to continue!! NoK was so damn awful to read for me, if it weren't because it's in Malazan world, I would've given it a 1 star, very easily.

Good luck Petrik!

NoK wasn't very good. RotCG is definitely better. There is a bit of a slow burn to start with, but the last third is excellent. Again it has a ton of characters we've only heard about and others we've met before. It does have a couple of great surprises that you wouldn't expect. At least I didn't.

I'm loving the series but I can't read the books one right after the other. I need breaks, lol.

Veronica I'm reading the side novels following the recommended order. I don't want to leave Malazan anytime soon! :)

I totally understand. It gets crazier! I'm a quarter through Reaper's Gale and I alreday know I'm going to have to take a little break after this. 151 names in drammatis personae is overkill

Can't wait for you to read Bonehunters though! It's as good as Memories of Ice imo! :)

message 4143: by Mel (new)

Mel | 2367 comments By the way, since I've been back some threads have caught my eye. At first I see Kafka On the Shore and 1984 and think, "Oh, some stuff I see on school curriculum lists as well. I should reread 1984." Then I see North and South and Anna Karinina and I think, "Wait... WAIT. Are we classy now?" When did that happen? I mean, great. I should have hopped onto Anna Karinina because that's one I don't think I can process on my own. But seriously... what'd I miss?

message 4144: by Virginie (last edited Sep 07, 2018 06:26AM) (new)

Virginie | 6129 comments Well, there was some talk about how reading only Fantasy and Sci-Fi was burning out some people (especially with the competition frenzy).
Diana and I created a thread for unplanned PNR reads, and a few other similar threads started to pop after that. There the contemporary romance, the historical romance, the YA reads and finally the classics.
That way, we get company while taking a breather from Fantasy / Sci-Fi. Also, buddy reads points :p

message 4145: by Diana Stormblessed (new)

Diana Stormblessed (dashichka) | 5397 comments I love fantasy but it's so much better with the side genre threads. Helps with the fantasy burn out. And I'm reading a bunch more books I probably wouldn't on my own.

Ah okay, that makes sense. I can get fantasy burnout as well, so I can see the need to switch things up. :)

Actually though... I think for me, I get my burnout from switching between authors and series. If I like something, I'll continue with that series and author for months and be fine. But constantly interrupting series to try to jump on buddy reads will wear me out. (It can be tempting though when I see so many books I want to read.)

I dunno if this is the same, Melissa but I'm a bit similar. I'm a binge reader, I utterly love binge reading books, and I feel like if I stayed away from a series for too long (more than a month) there's a tendency for me to lose interest in continuing; not to mention forget details of the series itself which make the next book in the series not reaching the maximum experience it could've reached. That's probably just me though, I don't see a lot of binge readers in this group or site really. xD
