nursing school started this week. i swear I'm alive. I'll be catching up on my reads tomorrow after I finish retyping my notes and whatnot. y'all pray for me 😢😭
So... I consider myself a fairly fast reader. Like, 2 books a week or so. And I also spend every single spare moment I have (between working full time and a baby) reading or listening to audiobooks. People, I have 7 points. --->7<---. And there are people with close to 60 at this point. Holy. Fucking. Shit.
Okay, rant over.
Okay, rant over.

I finished two or three books in a week, my stats says so, i have finished 5 books within these 11 days. It's the 11th day and Choko has read 4000 pages like holy shit... together with BR for massive point boost too! Btw, that's equivalent to finishing way of kings 4 times in less than two weeks. How....?? XD
Niki, the budy reads points really gives a big boost. The challenges not as much. The previous week I read 4 books for the challenge, but because none were buddy reads the points didn't go up as much. I am pretty sure the points I will get when I finish Reaper's Gale next week will be almost equal to the four books from last week added up. :s

Buddy Read? No
Challenge? Yes
Total points: 5.1
Niki, are you ready for The Shadow Rising? This is almost twice the size of the previous book. I am not going to deny that I am a bit afraid. If this is as slow as the previous one, I might just dnf. I dont think I would be able to stand 1007 pages at that pace.
I have downloaded the 1000 files for shadow Rising and am planning to start this weekend. I'm not going to lie - I'll be doing a few chapters a day only and it will take me several weeks to get through. We'll see how it goes. Im committed to finishing the series at this point just to say I did, but I definitely did not enjoy the last book much.
Buddy read points aside, it just amazes me how many pages Choko and others are devouring. All the power to them! We'll keep plodding along at "normal" speed and see how it goes haha.

A lot of people have a hard time getting into Jordan, I'm just one of the few that really really enjoy the more slow methodical writing haha.
There are some really great plot twists that come in The Shadow Rising, and the characters start to come into their fullness, too.
It is amazing to see how much a lot of people read!I normally aim for 50 books or so per year. Sometimes I get it, sometimes I don't. I am comfortable at that zone and I won't go far from it. :)
Liam wrote: "The Shadow Rising was probably the best book in the series imo. "Quite a few people told me that. This is the only reason why I am even giving this book a chance. On the bright side, my expectations for this book are very low, so I might enjoy it (if he stops the braid tugging).
I think that a mistake a lot of people make (and the thing that a lot of people in the BR we're doing) when reading Jordan, is reading the book too slow. Like a few people said they were reading a chapter a day, which isn't a bad thing, but if you combine intentionally slow reading with Jordan's slow writing, it turns into a total slog haha. I've been listening to them, and I've found that going through it quickly has made me enjoy them soooo much more than my first read of books 1-3.
Miche wrote: "It is amazing to see how much a lot of people read!I normally aim for 50 books or so per year. Sometimes I get it, sometimes I don't. I am comfortable at that zone and I won't go far from it. :)"
I aim for 80 this year because I'm going to read Malazan, last year I got 120+ which is fucking insane already. Sacrificed tons of socializing to achieve that
@Petrik, that's the important part: to find your comfort zone. :)I still like gaming, watching tv, going to restaurants, crafting, so I try to balance my reading time around the other activities.
@Liam, I try to finish his books as soon as possible. If I waited too long, I would just abandon them, lol.
I'm just trying to read as much as possible before our baby comes in March, because I know that's going to completely bomb my reading time haha (not complaining, I literally can't wait to be a dad, it's just a reality haha).
Liam wrote: "I'm just trying to read as much as possible before our baby comes in March, because I know that's going to completely bomb my reading time haha (not complaining, I literally can't wait to be a dad,..."Oh yes for sure.. I can't imagine how I'll find the time to read once I have a baby (unless before bed or something but the baby will probably cry too)
Yeah it's really the time aspect of it for me, because I know I'm going to want to be with him during all my free time until he's in bed. Wierdly enough, I can literally read anywhere and with anything going on around me and it doesn't bother me, it's like a gift haha. A lot of people need total peace and quiet, and I'm so not like that (probably because I grew up with 7 siblings. Peace and quiet was *extremely* hard to come by, so I adjusted =])
Petrik wrote: "Dude, lucky you man... That total peace and quite when reading is totally me. xD"Same for me!
They sleep a lot at first, so there seems to be only enough time between naps and needs to read and not much else haha. I'm so excited for you two. :)
I ended up reading a lot when I had my first baby cuz I would be up half the night with feedings and had nothing else to do during that time. Side question, for challenges, if you're in multiple challenges, if you finish a book, do you include it among all challenges (if applicable) or only do 1 challenge per book?
Niki Hawkes wrote: "They sleep a lot at first, so there seems to be only enough time between naps and needs to read and not much else haha. I'm so excited for you two. :)"Thanks Niki =].
@Petrik & Miche: I don't envy you ;].
You can include it for as many challenges as you'd like, but for bonus points, it only counts once.
Thanks guys. I'm only including it once for bonus points. Just didn't know if it was better to spread it out as only 1 challenge per book (since I'll prob be reading more books than each challenge holds) or just use whatever I can where I can.
I deleted my answer when trying to edit some typos. Fat fingers and small screen. :SSince Niki explained so well, I won't type it again, lol.
I see what you mean. It's personal preference, for sure. For the a-z, book cover, and bingo challenges, I usually only count a book once to keep it interesting, whereas practically everything gets counted towards my incomplete and overflowing challenges. We're pretty loosey goosey about rules. Whatever makes it the most fun for you is cool.
I updated my tab on the spreadsheet for the BR book I just completed and I'm about 20 pages away from finishing Gardens of the Moon.
Niki Hawkes wrote: "I see what you mean. It's personal preference, for sure. I've been counting everything for bingo, a-z, and cover challenges but I'm going to start only counting one each.
Liam wrote: "Yeah it's really the time aspect of it for me, because I know I'm going to want to be with him during all my free time until he's in bed..."Ahhhh, first time parents. By the time we got to #4 I was pretty much, "Don't bother me unless you're bleeding profusely, something's on fire, or there is Exorcist-level puking going on." :-)
Veronica wrote: "Liam wrote: "Yeah it's really the time aspect of it for me, because I know I'm going to want to be with him during all my free time until he's in bed..."Ahhhh, first time parents. By the time we ..."
holy fuck, this is some grimdark level parenting! XD but seriously though, I think people like you and all parents who's able to maintain their reading even with your own kids are amazing. It will take a lot of time for me to get used to it (whenever that time comes)
It reminds me of that pyramid, Petrik, where you can only pick two: good parenting, clean house, or sanity (reading). Lmao
Veronica wrote: "Liam wrote: "Yeah it's really the time aspect of it for me, because I know I'm going to want to be with him during all my free time until he's in bed..."Ahhhh, first time parents. By the time we ..."
Hahahaha, let me enjoy it while I can Veronica ;].
Niki Hawkes wrote: "It reminds me of that pyramid, Petrik, where you can only pick two: good parenting, clean house, or sanity (reading). Lmao"Guess clean house and sanity will have to switch around occassionally.... xD
@Petrik - I have the benefit of my kids being old enough now that they can do most things for themselves and they have their own interests. My 14 year old son, for example, has to be practically surgically removed from his PS4. My eight year old son, well, his name is Rafael but he's affectionately know as Rafazilla for reasons that you can probably guess. He's the youngest and if he'd been born first would probably have been an only child, lol. @Niki - so true! :-)
@Liam - It'll be great and you and your wife will be great. I remember not having much time when my kids were smaller. Kids #2 and 3 (boy and girl) are only two years apart so when they were between the ages of 3 and 6 they got into a load of mischief. We called them Bonnie & Clyde. I miss those days.

Petrik - amen to that lol. I bet everyone on here can tell the days I choose cleaning over sanity. (Bwahahaha)
