I've become a bit of a brainstormer, but maybe an entire new Buddy Read bonus point system is in order... one that rewards more bonus points the more people from the same team that participate in a Buddy Read... would require a more complex formula... like compound interest...
Like a 100 page book = 1 point... 2 team mates = 20% bonus = 1.2 points each... 3 team mates = 1.2 x 1.2 = 1.44 points each... 4 mates = 1.2 x 1.2 x 1.2 = 1.73 points each... rewards teamwork / team reading...
Edit: Just to be clear... I know it's too late to change anything about this year... unless you plan to change things at those quarterly goalposts mentioned at the start of the competition...

@Iain: Wouldn't that be quite difficult to implement? I simply thought of reducing the BR bonus to 1/3 instead of half the page points.

Yea... the complexity of that last suggestion is probably why it's not a thing... many more moving parts, and basically requires and data column to figure out...
The formula would be something like POINTS * 1.2^BUDDIES (excluding yourself)
My other suggestion was to drop bonus points to 25% like Challenges, or make both 33% like you said...

I also love Buddy Reads where you made a chapter plan ahead and following it more or less. Before I joined this group I only know this kind of Buddy Reads, there is way more to discuss when everybody is around the same point in the books. I'm a slow reader when it comes to non-audiobooks and it's always a bit frustrating when you start a book and everyone is done the next day and you are more or less talking to yourself... And even when people stay around to talk about after they finished (what's very kind and I really appreciate it!) it's not the same because they new what is going to happen and won't want to spoil things. Maybe we could suggest such a read? I didn't know that others are interested, every time I suggest something like a time plan on a read it didn't happened 😅
And I hope it's OK to butt in your Tomb Raider Disscussion like this!
My reaction to the challenge so far:January (joined at the end of the month): Oooooh, this is fun. Let's sign up to every challenge there is and a bunch of BRs!
February: Points, points, points. I NEED MORE POINTS! *calculates the number of hours 'wasted' sleeping*
March: So, sooo tired. Too many BRs. Can't keep up. Let's head to the team conversation and post pictures of my cat.

Of course it's OK. Well, I'm fine with it. I'm sure everyone else is as well :)
I'd be interested in a read planned chapter by chapter, so long as we go slow.
Pre-competition: Sign up for a bunch of things...
January: Read a bunch of things... do some side reads... have some spare time... randomly sign up for more things and read immediately...
February: Read book 2 in all the things I signed up for... read more new things... sign up for more things...
March: start falling behind a bit... drop out of 1 BR re-read... struggle to only fall 1-2 days behind on start dates... feel a bit overwhelmed with how many series I've started... keep going anyway... still sign up for thigns I shouldn't... no more time for side reads except Lake Silence and some short stories on work breaks...

I conveniently made myself an honorary member of EVERY team before the competition started... back when I was creating Team Pillow Fight Club...

I probably shouldn't be suggesting a group Buddy Read for another team, but it's been on my radar since last summer and Veronica already read it: Bookburners: The Complete Season 1
It's episodic, with 16 five to six chapter episodes about a team of magical book/artifact hunters... multiple authors... sounds like Warehouse 13... seems well-designed for a slower Buddy Read experience.. and I could join in ;)

It'd also be really easy to read an episode a week...or whatever frequency people decide on.
Just jumping on this conversation, I'm feeling pretty burned out on buddy reads too. I've definitely had fun ones this year, but some have just felt like a bit of a chore. I'm going to pare back my schedule massively, so sorry if I drop any I agreed to, I do hate letting people down, but I just can't do it. Need some time to just pick up a random book. And to actually read for challenges too, so far it's just been lucky my buddy reads fit a category. I've definitely been thinking about points for the challenge, and it's motivated me so much, but I don't want to completely burn out. There's too many great books planned, I can't read them all at the same time!
Maybe we should give people the option to drop from the challenge on a quartely basis. And maybe change how the buddy read bonus points works. For sure with the formula we have at the moment I won't sign up again as the buddy reads feel more like an obligation than a fun thing to do.
I am too much of a moody reader to do many buddy reads.

It's the same word in French (perhaps it actually comes from that language). For a secondn when I read your comment Niki, I thought 'Wait. Is that how you spell it in English?' hahaha
I think part of the trouble with the Competition kind of group environment is that it tends to make those of us who are non-elites feel like outsiders. Granted, my life has been flipped upside down these last two months, so I haven't been around much anyways, but even without all the busyness around me, I am much less likely to want to join in a BR where those participating only pop in to say hi and goodbye. ALSO it's no fun doing a BR when half the people finish in a day and then move on to the next BR, without really even contributing much to the discussion. I don't read fast, and I don't have a ton of time to read, but I *LOVE* books and I love reading them and talking about them and savoring them. Just my two cents =]. Miss talking to you everybody more. Work has picked up CRAZY for me (which is a good thing, because I have a sales job). And this baby is five days overdue, which is causing me to go partially out of my mind haha. But life is very good right now ^_^.
I'm going to piggyback off of Virginie's suggestion and propose a Tome Raiders movement:
The PNR Pacers!! Where if any of us is in a read together, we make a point to set a pace with each other that'll let us immerse into the book and encourage each other to slow down and really appreciate what we're reading (unless the book is shit, then all bets are off ;P). It will make the Reads feel more like a book club rather than something were phoning in for points.
WHO'S WITH ME??! ;)

Well, I'm in! These points means nothing to me anyway. I'm just using the form to keep track of my reading and bingo/cover challenges now xD

Literally everybody had us thinking the baby was going to come three weeks ago because he was so far along. So we've been going out of our minds for the month, and yet, here we are haha.

That sounds more my speed, but I'm not committing to anything at the moment =]. Imy presence will probably be somewhat limited for a bit until I get a more regular schedule going.
I'm glad the idea has appeal. Anything we can do to alleviate burnout is a good thing.
A lot of the mods are a little out of commission (including me), but I have some ideas for the team comp I'm going to percolate a little more then pitch once things are back to normal.
Thanks for cheering me up with what started as a rant today. ;P

I am in!
A thought that occurred to me this morning (while brushing my teeth no less :o).Would you guys be interested in reading short stories? It'd be very easy to set a pace (like one story a week). I've haven't read an anthology yet :( There might not be enough material for a discussion though.
I was thinking of Lost Lore: A Fantasy Anthology which is FREE on Kindle :D
I thought of anthologies when you guys were talking yesterday, but personally, I've never been very good at continuing with anthology Buddy Reads... I did one last summer and lasted 3 stories, I think...
My suggestion of Bookburners was a bit of a middleground, since it's basically 16 short stories featuring the same characters... like an episodic TV show...
But... there doesn't have to just be ONE slower paced Buddy Read happening, right?...
When do the interested parties want to start Bookburners: The Complete Season 1?... I can request it and have it added to the schedule... from what the reviews say, each short story is 50 pages... would we be doing 1 episode a week for 16 weeks?... or slower?

I wonder if we should pace it 1 story per week for 4 weeks, break (maybe 1 week) then resume. Just thinking out loud here.
I thought I responded earlier... I must have closed the tab...
Whatever works best for you... I'm the speed demon around here... breaking it up (like TV shows do) will allow people to catch up, as well...
Fell free to request the thread for whatever start date works best...

My problem with anthologies is that, from the ones I've seen, usually the stories in there are stories from middle of a series. Like Vampire Hunter 3.5, Stone Warden 6.8, etc. I'm someone who NEEDS to read things in order. So if I haven't read the series before, I need to start with book 1 and work my way to 3.5 and 6.8. Even if the stories don't spoil anything for preceding books, I just can't do it. If you can find one that's just a bunch of stand alone stories, I'm in.

The only book that comes to mind right now is The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories.

I'm not much for short stories, sadly. I've read a few that I liked, but often have a hard time getting into them unless, like Diana said, I'm reading them in order as part of a series.
You know... if the Team Competition turns into a stressful dud/flop, you could probably turn this team thing into a thing... (I'm a master of words)
What I mean is, this team's comraderie that's grown reminds me a bit of the Recommendation challenge over at GG&G... I mention that group a lot, since it's my 2nd most active group...
You could do a thing without points, where people signup and are split into groups of 5-10... then those groups brainstorm books to read together... kinda like Mayim/Veronica's Guy Gavriel Kay Squad... or the Bujold Squad Mayim put together... only instead of the group growing out of the book, the books grow out of the squad...
Kinda like what was discussed yesterday with wanting a small/decent-sized Buddy Read that really explores their books at a more leisurely pace... you could run the teams for 3-6 months and then do another team-reassignment... kinda like musical chairs...
This almost feels like it should have been in the suggestion thread...

Niki Hawkes wrote: "Where only BRs read with each other count? That's a cool idea. :)"I love my team and would love to do more BRs with y'all.
You could do that, too... that's kind of a simpler version of the complicated math formula idea from yesterday...
This idea was more... "If the Team Competion doesn't work out... Team-Planned Buddy Reads could still be a thing... kinda like the PNR Buddy Reads thread, where the same group of people keep trying different Paranormal Romance reads"
EX: This group is assembled through some sort of sorting system like when the teams were made back in January... everyone suggests some books to read... maybe run a poll... start doing Buddy Reads... like Bookburners: The Complete Season 1, The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories, Lost Lore: A Fantasy Anthology"
Clearly this idea could go in multiple directions, tho... whatever works for the group

@ Iain : I like that idea of having smaller teams to start reading a few books together. That’d be fun.
Side note, I just noticed most of our team is reading red rising. I wish I hadn't read that one already else I'd be all over that haha.
