I'm doing a reenactment of Zaara's juggling performance of last month. Currently reading 5 different books and a few mangas on the side. I'm hoping to bring those points in 10 days or so... :p
@Miche: I loved reading about everyone's travels and home region/town too.@The best team: If you don't mind me asking personal details, I'd love to know more about you guys. So... What do you do for a living? :)
Aristea, you're coming again sometime this year? You'll have to mention again when you decide to make that trip! That's really cool that you have that international community around you. I know if I ever move outside Japan, I'll crave other Japanese speakers the same way. One of the best things about living abroad is having colleagues from all over the world, making friends from Chile, Trinidad, Spain, the Netherlands, Algeria, South Africa, Nepal, Singapore, New Zealand... It's sad though when they leave. A couple of Iranian friends are leaving this month, and because of the US having poor international relations, I don't know when or if I'll see them again. ;_:
(Maybe if we make that cruise I can at least wave to them from the Persian Gulf. :P)
Miche, sorry to hear about the book slump. I find the best remedy is to reread some of my favorites. After a couple of one or two star reads, it's a good way to remind yourself, "No, it's not me, it was the books. These books are awesome!"Along those lines, I reread a slim volume - a favorite that I recommend to everyone:

Oh, and to answer your question Virginie, I'm an English as a Foreign Language teacher here. A fairly common line of work. Sometimes though the job description includes working with the local government for international relations like the G7 summit a couple years ago, or translation work and such. My favorite part though is still in school with the kids. <3 What about you guys?
I'm boring. I'm a private equity accountant. I hate it and have been trying to get into not for profit work. Hard to do in the middle of your career though. To make myself feel less dirty for working for a bunch of rich guys I volunteer for an animal shelter. Wanted to be a veterinarian since I was 7 years old, but after working at an animal hospital for 3 years, I couldn't emotionally handle all the animals brought it to be put down. Sometimes for very treatable ailments. I totally get why veterinarians have such a high suicide rate.
I finally finished Deadhouse Gates and I was waiting for that to make my batch update. I'll be adding around nine books to the spreadsheet this evening - most of them not BRs though. As for what I do for a living, I'm a licensed clinical social worker. I spent about 10 years working in the mental health field, including a stint working on an inpatient psychiatric unit. For the past few years though I've worked with some of the more severely injured military veterans, mainly with a focus on those with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and/or amputees.
Choko is the other social worker that I know of in this group.
I also love getting to know more about everyone. Awesome Virginie, that was to be my next question, so thank you!
I'm an office worker, where I handle accounts and files for a local bigwig. I absolutely love it, I'm pretty much left to my own devices most days and have the autonomy to work on what I want. I feel really lucky to have this job. I had to leave my bookselling job of 11 years due to injury, and this opportunity opened up when I needed it most. I still miss bookselling though. I'll always be one at heart. :)

Took me a while to finish this one, I think this is the biggest book I've ever read. The MM paperback (the one I'm reading) is 1440 pages long!
After a week on a business trip, I can make some progress. I should be able to close a second book today and I will add it soon! Title: Mage's Blood

Awesome! Can't wait to get to this one! :D
@Melissa: Wow, that's awesome! Do you have to have a certain degree/teaching certification? I know the laws vary from country to country for this kind of things.I would never be able to teach to kids... I'm not patient enough.
@Diana: I'll admit, I had to google your job title 'cause I didn't know what is was exactly :pIt doesn't sound boring to me but then, I'm a math nerd ><
It's great that you volunteer for a shelter. A friend of mine introduced me to local animal shelters. She's welcoming dogs into her house before they can find a forever home. I don't have the time to regularly volunteer but I'm donating cat/dog food every week or so :)
I didn't know vets had a high suicide rate... That makes sense though. I'm like you, I wouldn't be able to handle the job emotionally.
@Niki: Your job sounds very interesting. Autonomy was the most important criteria for my career choice, it's great that you can work on what you want! And I feel you can really shine with your organizational skills :pWhat kind of injury did you have, if that's not too personal?
Petrik wrote: " Awesome! Can't wait to get to this one! :D "It isn't any masterpiece, but the books were very fun to read. :)
Yeah organizing so information is readily available is like 75% of my job. Perfect, right? Lol
My injury was kind of a gradual thing. Officially called a "bilateral wrist injury" I essentially had strained tendons, carpel tunnel, and this weird phantom pain in the top of my wrists that I think came from trying to work with wrist braces. I was the receiving manager, so I opened, scanned, and processed thousands of books every day. I was really gung-ho about getting everything done and practically killed myself for the company. Eventually that attitude caught up to me. It has been 5 years since I left and I'm finally back to like 80% usage of my hands. I spent a couple years thinking I'd be in pain the rest of my life.
Things have a way of working out though. So barnes and noble has been under new ownership for a couple years now, and it's clear to me they don't give one whit about their employees. Last month they systematically went through and eliminated several positions (to "free up money to open new stores," how much bs is that?), and my receiving manager position was one of the ones eliminated. Had I not been injured and forced to find something else, I would've been let go after 15 years of service. I really dodged a bullet. I'd planned on being with them forever before I got hurt. Yikes, right??

thank you Virginie! You don't need to be bothered with it; I appreciate it though!
@Aristea: Eh, I assure you it's not a bother... I actually like entering the data :p I thought that maybe you didn't want me tinkering with your scoresheet ;)
Niki, after reading your raving recommendation in one old thread, I started Leviathan Wakes. So far I am really enjoying the audio!
Miche, I nominated Nice Dragons Finish Last to be the book of the month in another group after you recommended it to me. It won the poll! I'll be reading it in April :D Reaaaally looking forward to it.

Niki Hawkes wrote: "Aristea what did you think of sword bound?! I didn't see any of your thoughts on the thread."You're right, I read it while on the plane and I ended up not adding any comments; apologies!
I am torn; on one side, I think the author ran out of ideas and she needed to find a way to finish the series. On the other hand, I am glad Tiger and Del have an ending I can live with.
I loved the series, I love Tiger (not so much Del) and I think he is one of my favorite characters of all times. I also think the series was too long - it really did not need some of the books in between!

It's a good, character driven series. I'm reading book four right now.

I loved to read everybody's traveling stories. Tome Raiders traveling guild too! ;)
Who knows? We might have a Tome Raiders meeting in Japan! :D
