Riding the Highways: CA Highway 49

Welcome to the first in a series of Road Trip challenges where we "Ride the Famous Highways" of the US.

Our first Road Trip has us winding the roads through California’s Gold Rush Country on Historic Highway 49. Our trip will start in Coloma where the first gold was found and will end in Mariposa, the last mining town on the Mother Lode Trail.

Here's How it Works:
The tasks are all centered around the number of miles we are traveling from place to place. The miles traveled will be the numbers we use to choose our book to complete the task, using one of the following:

✱ Series Number OR
✱ TBR Number OR
✱ Page Count Number (Please share total page count)

You can mix and match how you complete the tasks. For the TBR option you can sort your TBR any way you like to find the required TBR number. Please indicate when you post your competed book if you are a series, TBR or page count number for the task.
**Please note: TBR usually refers to your To-Read shelf on GR though GR has recently renamed the shelf Want to Read.

IMPORTANT: This challenge MUST be completed IN ORDER. You must complete Task #1 before moving on to Task #2 and so on. It is a road trip and you can’t hop around.

Challenge Rules: All forms of books are accepted as long as they are 100 pages or more. When posting updates of completed books, please include a link to the title and author’s name, along with the date you finished reading the book. When you have finished the challenge, please copy and paste your entire challenge and re-post in a new message, letting us know it is completed.

“There’s gold in the hills of California!” These words echoed around the world in 1848 and started a mass migration to the wilderness of interior California. Gold seekers trekked from every part of the world and every walk of life to pan the streams for gold. Have fun following the gold seekers as we drive the California Mother Lode Trail.

1. Highway 49 Starting Place: Coloma
Coloma is where it all began and where the first gold was found! Today most of the original town is within the boundaries of the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park which offers a pleasant driving tour through the old streets visiting the different landmarks. For a fun afternoon take a walk down to the nearby river and try panning for gold. You might get lucky!

2. Drive 17 miles from Coloma to Placerville
With its convenient central location, Placerville served not only as a mining hub, but also an important supply center with shops, lodging and banking. By 1854 it grew to be the third largest town in California. Today Placerville still serves as as a hub for many nearby activities and destinations and as you walk downtown you can see they are working hard to keep its Gold Rush heritage alive.

3. Drive 30 miles from Placerville to Sutter Creek
This is a pretty town that works hard to keep its Main Street authentic. Find the perfect Gold rush keepsake at the Monteverde General Store, an example of a perfectly preserved General Store from the mid 1800's.

4. Drive 4 miles from Sutter Creek to Jackson
Water was the “gold” here making it a natural way station for thirsty travelers and soon became a trade and transportation center. Though it also had one of the largest producing mines in California – The Kennedy Gold Mine known as the deepest gold mine in the world.

5. Drive another 8 Miles from Jackson to Mokelumne Hill
Today this is a tiny, tranquil shell of what once was one of the largest and most violent towns in the Mother Lode. This plague is about the only evidence remaining of their turbulent past.

6. Drive 10 miles from Mokelumne Hill to San Andreas
This town started as a Mexican mining camp and soon had a history of strife and fights as the American miners saw the profits being made and wanted in. Today it is the Calaveras County seat and no, the San Andreas Fault does NOT run through the city.

7. Drive 20 miles from San Andreas to Murphys
Let’s take a short side trip off Highway 49 to another great Gold rush town. Murphys is one of the most captivating communities in the Mother Lode – a well preserved relic of the 19th century. Main Street is lined with interesting buildings with Murphys Hotel being the highlight. It’s a charming place to stay while investigating today’s gold in the mountains surrounding it – wineries!

8. Drive 8 miles from Murphys to Angels Camp
Angel’s Camp is a gold rush town that was short-lived in its day due to the fact that more quartz than gold was found in the area. Now it's famous as the place Mark Twain shared his “Celebrated Jumping Frog” story. On your way out of town watch for a road sign that will take you to see Twain’s Cabin.

9. Drive 22 miles from Angels Camp to Columbia State Historic Park
Let's take another side trip off the highway and head to Columbia, the best-preserved mining town in California which serves as a living museum. It is the closest thing possible to stepping back in time.

10. Drive 5 miles from Columbia State Historic Park to Sonora
This was one of the biggest, richest & wildest towns during the gold rush years. It is still a bustling city and has many original buildings from the era including the County Court House.

11. Drive 6 miles from Sonora to Jamestown
This is a large and thriving town from the Gold Rush. The highlight and “must see” is Railtown 1897 State Historic Park. It's a fascinating stop and gives you an opportunity to ride a restored steam powered train.

12. Drive 7 miles from Jamestown to Chinese Camp
After being banished from the other mining camps the Chinese settled in this area growing to a population of 5000. It is now a small community of 150 and the only surviving building from the era is St. Xavier’s Catholic Church. The church is located on a hill across the highway and is said to be haunted.

13. Drive 25 Miles from Chinese Camp to Coulterville
Coulterville is a small community that still has a few buildings from the Gold Rush Era including the Hotel Jeffery and the Magnolia Saloon, the oldest working saloon in California. It is also home to Whistling Billy, a small locomotive that once hauled ore from a nearby mine.

14. Drive 35 Miles from Coulterville to Mt Bullion in Bear Valley
Driving up an impressive canyon formed by the Merced River we arrive in Mt Bullion, a tiny community today but was a bustling place during the Gold Rush with the nearby Princeton Mine.

15. Drive 12 Miles from Mt Bullion to Mariposa.
Our final destination, The California State Mining and Mineral Museum helps tell the story of how explorers found the rich Mariposa Vein and opened the first mill to crush ore and extract gold. They proudly display the spectacular 13.8 pound Fricot Nugget, a rare and beautiful specimen of crystallized gold discovered in 1864.

Today most of the original town is within the boundaries of the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park which offers a pleasant driving tour through the old streets visiting the different landmarks. For a fun afternoon take a walk down to the nearby river and try panning for gold. You might get lucky!

Our first Road Trip has us winding the roads through California’s Gold Rush Country on Historic Highway 49. Our trip will start in Coloma where the first gold was found and will end in Mariposa, the last mining town on the Mother Lode Trail.
