The first capital we are exploring is Canada's beautiful and fascinating city of Ottawa. Here are a few interesting facts to share before we start our visit:

✱ It sits on the south bank of the Ottawa River near Montréal and the US border.
✱ Queen Victoria of Britain chose Ottawa to be the capital of Canada in 1857.
✱ There are 4 distinct seasons with temperatures ranging from 33C in summer to -25C.
✱ It’s a bilingual city with most locals speaking both English and French.
✱ It’s one of the youngest cities in the country with nearly half the population being under the age of 35.

Let's start exploring - choose a level and enjoy your trip!
Day Tripper: 4 Attractions
Explorer: 5-6 Attractions

Attractions

1. Parliament Hill:
commercial photography locations
The magnificent Gothic revival Parliament Hill sits in the middle of the city centre overlooking the Ottawa River. The building is home to the Parliament of Canada, but is also a major tourist attraction. Each morning during summer months, the front lawn is the setting of the daily Changing of the Guard ceremony. Each evening the public is invited to gather again to witness the awe-inspiring Sound and Light show with spectacular lighting effects projected on the Parliament Buildings set to words and music.

✱ Read a book that has a building with spires on the cover OR
✱ Read a book tagged Gothic on its GR Homepage OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first and last initial can be found in PARLIAMENT HILL.

2. ByWard Market

For nearly 200 years this rollicking public market has played host to artisans, farmers and craft merchants who converge year round to sell fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers and specialty items. This downtown market is a great place to wander around and mingle with the locals. It also houses numerous cafés and some of the city’s best pubs and restaurants.

✱ Read a book with a fruit or vegetable on the cover OR
✱ Read a book with a character that works with food (cooks, serves, grows, etc) OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first and last initial can be found in BYWARD MARKET.

3. Rideau Canal

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this historic waterway is filled with boaters spring through fall and becomes the world’s largest naturally frozen ice skating rink in winter. The Rideau Canal winds through downtown Ottawa before connecting with the Ottawa River through stepped locks right next to Parliament Hill. It’s a beautiful place for a stroll no matter the season.

4. Garden Promenade

If visiting gardens a priority, then this is for you! The Garden Promenade is a 15 km circuit that celebrates Ottawa’s garden culture by showcasing 40 gardens and over 70 garden experiences in Canada’s Capital Region. The route is focused where many main tourist attractions are located. If you like to explore on your own, you can use the interactive maps and routes to plan your visit on foot, by bike, by public transportation, or by car.

5. Canadian War Museum

Canada's rich military history is showcased here through artifacts, personal stories, artwork, photos and interactive presentations. Tour the extensive permanent exhibitions and expand your knowledge of the conflicts that shaped Canada, Canadians and the world. Rest and reflect in Memorial Hall, discover the Museum's fascinating architectural theme and chat with a veteran to let history come alive.

✱ Read a book written by a Canadian OR
✱ Read a book whose author’s first and last initial can be found in WAR MUSEUM.

6. Haunted Walk of Ottawa

Learn about the infamous history and darker side of the city with this spooky tour. It focuses on Ottawa’s dark past, where you will hear haunting stories about some of the city’s most famous spots: Bytown Museum, the Ottawa Jail Hostel and the Fairmont Chateau Laurier. Tours are led by guides cloaked in black and holding lanterns.

As a child I was terrified by the cemeteries, now I don't like them, although I find the American ones more "peaceful" than the European ones. This cover with the graves in the middle of the snow and the red blood-colored sky gives me a bit of shivers, but I find it intriguing too: I can't get it out of my head ..

Kim. E. | 61 comments Jan,

I have tried to copy and paste my finished challenge 4 times now that I have insisted the fur babies stay off my lap, but every time my self determined computer and mouse insist on pasting a challenge I did yesterday. No idea why, but if we can give this a pass to prevent a technology meltdown this once I would appreciate it.

Jan | 12625 comments Sure thing Kim!!! Don't sweat it....I've marked you down as completed.
