James Corkill | 21 comments Could you please use these images for the new covers for my books?
Here are the goodreads numbers and links for the new covers.
Thank you,
James M. Corkill

Again, thanks for your help.

☕ Lachgas ♿ (lachgas) | 6188 comments can you please link to the editions on GR? (the bookIDs do not help us a lot as we can't search for them)
and we need to verify the ISBN of the editions and the new covers match so the "only cover" links without any further information aren't that helpful ...
(considering the fact you have a lot of different editions that all should be as accurate as possible)

☕ Lachgas ♿ (lachgas) | 6188 comments Sorry saw your answer just now ... and your links on your webspace aren't working for me.

Are the covers on Amazon the newest ones? Then I could get them from there...

James Corkill | 21 comments Yes, those are the ones. Here is the link to my Amazon author page.
Thanks, Lachgas.

☕ Lachgas ♿ (lachgas) | 6188 comments ok, I'm going through that bit by bit

Deadly energy: You want a new cover for ISBN 1483942937
Amazon shows that one
And it's already there because you removed the ISBN of that edition yourself and changed the format from paperback to kindle. (which is probably against policy but will just look into the log more closely now)

☕ Lachgas ♿ (lachgas) | 6188 comments Oh ... that will be quite a bit of work to untangle that, so please do not make any other edits while I'm trying to do that on the books I'm working on.
And: do not remove notes of alternate cover editions from the descriptions they are a help for the readers - especially with that many different covers.

James Corkill | 21 comments Okay. Thanks.

☕ Lachgas ♿ (lachgas) | 6188 comments Deadly Energy
I reverted your removal of the ISBN and the change of format and pub date because altering published editions is against policy and leads to confusion.
Because of your removal of the ISBN it got automatically imported again (on the same day) as the edition you uploaded a different cover for in June 2017
As the ASIN/ISBN always (only exception are Advanced reviews copies) stays with the edition it is first entered with it's now back there again where you once removed it from)

As I haven't got time today to look deeper in the log (means, to earlier editions) and check if there were other removals that's the present situation - if someone else wants to go in the depth of the log, you're welcome.

But your first request for an cover upload should be solved then? Because that was what you wanted to see on GR?

If you meant a different edition for getting an alternate cover edition you'll have to link that because covers are always edition specific and not interchangeable.

In case you need that:
As the author, you have the ability to change which edition of the book is the default, which will come up in searches by title and show on your author profile. Here are the instructions: How to Change Edition

I'll go on with the other links you presented later this evening, have to get done some personal things first :/

☕ Lachgas ♿ (lachgas) | 6188 comments Oh and forgot: saw your posting on the edit page of one of the books from 2014 asking for something with the ASIN - librarians don't get informed in any way about such postings so we only see them by accident while already working on that record - which is why you never got a response. (same goes for librarian notes)

James Corkill | 21 comments Hi, Lachgas. I don't understand most of what you said, except for switching to other editions. I'll use that method, so don't worry about changing the covers for me.
Thanks anyway.

☕ Lachgas ♿ (lachgas) | 6188 comments So, finally I'm now through all of your logs and reverted several incorrect ISBN additions or format changes (do not change a kindle edition to a paperback - they are considered different on GR) and several removals of notes about alternate cover editions.

And combined two editions with different titles with their original titles. (#1 and #3)

Now that it is as sorted as possible I'm going through your links again and will see if there is really a cover missing.

What don't you understand? You have so many editions that it might be important you understand how GR is working when it comes to different covers - so don't hesitate to ask.
It's probably easier to explain that now as to untangle another chaos in a few months :)

☕ Lachgas ♿ (lachgas) | 6188 comments Goodreads policy is to keep all published covers on the site, as users want to shelve the cover of the copy they have. Instead, we add an alternate-cover edition. See here and here

Alternate-cover edition added here, with cover from Amazon:
1. alternate cover edition for the kindle edition of Cold Energy which was indeed missing

2. for the ebook edition of Gravity you linked I couldn't find a source with that ISBN which is allowed to look what cover you want to have - would be good if your homepage link for that edition would be working, I'll look then again.

3. same as in 2. goes for Pandora's Eyes and the linked smashword edition (it's not available anymore there if you search by that ISBN
edit: It's important to be specific about the ISBN - I did find 9781310418501 on smashwords for Pandora's Eyes and added an alternate cover edition for that edition here

4. after the experience with Pandora's Eyes I went back to Gravity and on Smashwords is the ISBN 9781311431349 with a cover currently not yet on GR, so I added that as alternate cover edition here

5. Now on to Alex Cave #1-3 (note: please do not alter that title it's according to GR standards at the moment), you linked ISBN 9781503279575 and that has indeed a cover on Amazon which isn't on GR for that ISBN (if I see it correct maybe for others but didn't look that closely) so I created an alternate cover edition here for it

☕ Lachgas ♿ (lachgas) | 6188 comments Now some general information:
- On GR the publication date of alternate cover editions is not the original pub date - if we know it we do use the real date of exact that alternate cover edition and if we don't know it exact we go with actual year and month.
So do not "correct" that to the original date. (only just in case, because I had seen authors correcting that in the past)

- Because I saw that often in your log, do not remove the hints about the alternate cover edition from either the description of that edtion or the note in that yellow 'librarian's note' box - it's used (and with quite a few alternate editions probably also needed) for orientation for readers and librarians fixing/helping something on your books.

- And additionally to the last point: I know that happens easily but try to avoid checking the "set as default description" box on editions which have a note about an alternate cover - that is populating then to all other editions which use the default description at that moment and would mean all are marked as an alternate cover editon then which wouldn't be correct but only confusing.

- do not alter identiyfying information on an already published book's record, that means do not remove/enter ASIN/ISBN/change author names (some people do that unfortunately) or the format that's just not the way GR works - and it makes it more difficult to work on that edition later in case of a new cover for example.

Phew, think I'm done now ...

If you have further questions or don't understand things - just ask that's totally ok in the forum.

☕ Lachgas ♿ (lachgas) | 6188 comments Oh knew i wasn't done ;)
Added DNA to the Alex Cave series as #6
