I placed a hold on this book last year and had two separate technical glitches receiving it so by the third try I had high expectations. It lived up to the hype. Vance actually has a typical middle class American family history. There are Appalachian and Midwest characteristics, but the framework applies to families across the country. His grandparents were born poor in Kentucky, moved the growing cities of Ohio, worked to build a middle-class life, and then watched their children struggle to maintain it. Vance details his family’s saga and shows it reflected in the community history. He also considers his upbringing, the turning points and people who shaped his future. After the Marines and an elite law school he has a highly unique perspective of both the “coastal elite” and “hillbillies” of middle America.
