"War Dances" is "about a man suffering from sudden hearing loss and grief over his father’s death. Alexie begins with a Kafkaesque moment of a cockroach in a suitcase and continues to vacillate between big and little, the whole world in the tiniest things. This story was the title story in another collection "War Dances," a collection of poems, vignettes, and stories that won the 2010 PEN/FAULKNER Award for Fiction.

I really liked the format of this one, with the small yet related vignettes. I think this is a fun aspect of short story - you can play with form in ways that wouldn't always suit a full length novel. It bridges the gap between poetry and prose, in a way.

also, bugs in the ear... ugh!!!

I know, Cady! remember reading a story about earwigs when I was in high school I think. Was it Conrad? Gave me nightmares!

I agree about the format. Very different, but Alexie made it work. I also love the exit interview question list for his father. Very humorous, but at the same time sad.
