Rob Scarborough | 24 comments I've been trying to combine different editions of the same book, but a message comes up, " select more than one work" I have say 2 paperback versions and a kindle version listed but there is only one tick box. Ihave also tried to make a particular edition the primary edition, but nothing changes.
Any ideas what I am doing wrong.

Thanks, Rob Scarborough

Cassandra (cassanj) | 4919 comments A link to the book in question would help to start.
If there's only one box to check for a particular title, my guess would be that they're already combined.

These are directions for setting a default edition- https://www.goodreads.com/help/show/3.... If it's not working for you, you'll need to contact support as that's not something librarians are able to do- https://www.goodreads.com/about/conta....

Looks like they are the same story, with somewhat different titles.

lethe | 13669 comments OK, in that case, all are combined that should be combined. Unless there are other editions with differing titles that belong together.

Rob, could you tell us the correct series name for this edition?
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...
The description says it follows up on Daft Harry and the Wasps (Daft Harry and the Suction Machines #2). Does that mean it should be combined with More Chores for Daft Harry (Daft Harry and the Suction Machines #3) and that the #2 in the title field is wrong?

Hi, I first released Daft Harry Does The Shopping and Daft Harry Gets His Decorating Stripes As separate little books, but then decided to combine them under one title which is More Chores For Daft Harry....So, does this mean I should combine the two (Shopping and Decorating) with More Chores and remove the #2 ? as now, More Chores is #3 of Suction Machines.....PS. For some reason, Daft Harry Gets His Decorating Stripes hasn't come over to Goodreads yet, I will do it manually......Thanks for your help.

lethe | 13669 comments I am not good with series that become more complicated than just #1, #2, #3 etc.

But if More Chores for Harry is #3, that means that Daft Harry Does the Shopping should be #3 part 1 of 2, and Daft Harry Gets His Decorating Stripes, #3 part 2 of 2. They should not be combined with #3, because they only contain half each of #3. Only books that have the same contents should be combined.

I am hoping that a librarian with more series experience than I do, will check that what I say is correct.

That seems to make sense Lethe, thank you. I only joined GR last week, hence haven't a clue, but would like to get it right if poss. I have complicated things by releasing books progressively and then later, changing titles and merging etc.... Regards Rob

Can I have a second opinion on how to handle the series name?
See my comment #7.

Thanks in advance.

If they were originally published in parts and then together, it would be more common to give the originals parts numbers 1, 2, 3, and the combined version as 1-3.

message 11: by lethe (new)

lethe | 13669 comments Thanks, but the other books in the series were not published in parts first: https://www.goodreads.com/author/list...

Only #3 was first published in two parts.

Still not seeing why those wouldn't be #3 and #4, and the combined book #3-4.

message 13: by lethe (new)

lethe | 13669 comments Because they have far fewer pages (10 and 12) than the other books?

They're all in the under-50-pages range.

But another option is to have the combined as #3, and the parts as #3A and #3B.

message 15: by lethe (new)

lethe | 13669 comments Hi Rob, have added the books to the series. Sorry that it took so long! I have way too many tabs open on my computer.

I have added the two parts as 3A and 3B (@rivka: I really don't like that notation, since it is impossible to tell how many parts there are in total).

https://www.goodreads.com/series/2162...

If you prefer them to be #3 and #4, and More Chores to be #3-4, let me know and I'll change it.

There are two Daft Harry books not in the series yet:

Disobedient Cow: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... - which number would this be?

Cleans Up: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3... - the description says this contains books 1-4, but the titles are #2, #3A, #3B? (= Decorating Stripes?) and #4 in the series.

message 16: by Rob (new)

Rob Scarborough | 24 comments Hi, thanks for your work....I think calling chores, 3-4 and the individual books shopping #3, and decorating #4 is the clearest.

Disobedient cow is going to be apart of series 2, the other titles will be released soon...probably #2 of second series.

Cleans up is a volume inside one cover which contains hoovering, shopping, decorating and pit of doom in consecutive chapters. there is also a bonus background chapter on history and geography of Lincoln Edge......So it is not the full first series( no April fool chapter.....it is kind of a compilation of stories...

I sell separate books ,.....April fool, hoovering, more chores, and pit of doom as first series in a polyester sleeve, the sleeve is named Daft Harry and the suction machines, and has the different illustration mentioned this morning...

Hope this is not making things even more confusing :)

Rob

lethe | 13669 comments Hi Rob, I could only find this on Amazon:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/optional-inc...

https://www.amazon.com/Suction-Machin...

The series order is very different on Amazon, and April Fool (which is #1 on Goodreads) is called a bonus story on Amazon UK, and #3 on amazon.com, respectively.

Also, the set (books 1-4) includes what is currently #1-4 on Goodreads (albeit in a different order), so I don't know if changing the numbering is a good idea. After changing, it would become #1, #2, #3-4, #5.

What do you mean by sleeve? Is that a cover, or are the four loose books wrapped in plastic with the series name (and an illustration?) printed on it? I didn't find a different illustration, just the four books together.

As I said, I am not good with series that become any more complicated than simple consecutive numbering, so I would like someone who is better versed in series than I am to give some advice.

message 18: by Rob (new)

Rob Scarborough | 24 comments So, when I added the bonus story to the first series was when I decided. that was now "The full first series" At the same time, I merged shopping and decorating into 1 cover, thus maintaining four books in the full first series. I may remove the individual titles shopping and decorating from sale, that would simplify things? :)

I'm afraid not, since they have been published and GR does not delete published editions, even when they are now out of print. Plus they are both half of More Chores, which would still be part of the series :)

Rob Scarborough | 24 comments OH well, never mind Lethe, ...Did you see my other replies to your older thread about loading a different cover illustration for the series etc?....Oh yes, I see a comment about the series on Amazon....I am about to alter the listing to show the new cover to suction machines...that was Why I wondered how you load a series cover on this site?
