Linda C (libladynylindac) | 1053 comments The first third of the book was the life of Mel Jacoby through his college years (which included a year abroad in China) and a year in China following college making contacts and trying to get work in journalism. He returns home and makes connections with news publications to go back as a paid journalist. The next section deals with Annalee Whitmore's background, Mel and Annalee's meeting, and his return to China and her following. Then their move to Manila and their marriage. The last third of the book is the story hinted at in the sub-title; their escape from Manila and flight around the islands ahead of the Japanese. This was the nail-biter part of the story.

You need to enjoy reading history to appreciate the book. People who read it for the harrowing escape were generally put off by the first half of the book. I enjoyed it.
