Roseann | 38 comments I see Angel, where is Spike? He actually wound up being my favorite overall.

I'd take out Klaus Kinski and add him in!

message 3: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 617 comments I feel like the list is too ... haphazard (for lack of a better word). One 'Top 20' is a little bit of a vague description ... did someone vote on these or is this just from the people who work at Entertainment Weekly. Also, I'm not sure some of them, like Dracula and Edward Cullen can really be compared. Dracula has stood an incredible test of time, while Edward Cullen has been a tween/teen phenomenon for a year. I think he needs to stand the test of time a couple decades more before he can be put in the same league as Lestat and Dracula (And this is true for a lot of them not just Edward Cullen). Also is this Top 20 best or just most popular, because I've read books with better vampires than Edward Cullen, but they're just not as well known. All in all Entertainment Weekly could have used better editing in this. Of course it is also just an 'Entertainment' magazine and not a literary critique of these characters either. haha

Stephanie Lauren I like your list better! LOL

I would like to throw Bones fromJeaniene Frost Night Huntress series in the mix somewhere

message 6: by Jo (new)

Jo Mitchell from being human has to be on there :)

message 7: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I just discovered Being Human. I DVR'd an episode last night on BBC, but I am not sure where it is in the series. Or how long this show has even been on.

message 8: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 244 comments
I just saw Being Human the first time two weeks ago. I liked it. Mitchell is a total Hottie!!

message 9: by Melissa (new)

Melissa I was pissed Spike didn't make it on the list. I also think both Blade and Selene were way too low on the list.

message 10: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I have yet to read the Twilight books, but I don't find the actor that they pick very desirable at all. He looks like he could really be a boy vampire. LOL And in all the books I've read, vamps are much more manly. Strong, powerful, almost god like. But he just seems wimpy. I know he is a high school boy, but ewwww.
And yes, I know I need to read the books! LOL

message 11: by Jo (new)

Jo I think the actor they chose for twilight was aweful. Edward is so much better in the books :)

message 12: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie You know I have heard one than one person make that comment.

message 13: by new_user (new)

new_user Eh, well, I can agree with Angel at least. And Selene.

Thanks Jackie

I agree The "kid" who played Edward is just too young for me personally. I want a vampire MAN.

message 16: by Starling (new)

Starling But the Edward in the book is so young he is hanging out at the High School, probably because he is so young looking that if he wasn't in school there would be questions.

I haven't seen the movie. I don't see a lot of movies these days anyway, but I'm totally turned off by how all of those actors are made up, and the whole eye thing .

Ellen Where is my Dimitri from vampire academy!! =O

LOL A couple of people have been upset that Dimitri wasn't on it. The only reason I could fathom is that either Vampire Academy isn't as well known, or because in the books he is called a Dhampir, and that confused people. Personally, I think he should be on the list too!

Nathaniel (nathaniel_) A comment about EW lists from a long time subscriber

Frankly they're always a little haphazard if you ask me. And I think they're running out of list ideas (thank god?) Otherwise we're gonna get Top 20 redheads, or Left Handed Women Writers.

(Could another explanation about Vampire Academy be it hasn't hit TV yet? Isn't it supposed to?)

IDK a list about the Top 20 left handed writers sounds sooo....fun! LOL j/k I think I would end up hitting my head against the wall! LOL

I would have thought that, but they listed Jean-Claude from the anita blake series and that hasn't hit tv/movies yet either...Hmmm...IDK, maybe they're just screwed up in the head. LOL

It's Vampire Diaries that is going to be on tv. It starts on September 10th. :)

LOL I really didn't like Edward that much. I was one of the few who wanted Bella to end up with Jacob. Her relationship with him was more substantial. I really liked Jaspers character...he had more depth! :)

message 26: by Gothicladybug (new)

message 29: by Cindi (last edited Aug 28, 2009 03:59PM) (new)

Cindi (ourtrumpcard) OK, I can see where the problems are: we need more than 20 slots! So EW needs to break it down more - like Top 20 Movie/Book/TV/Book to TV, etc. Or we must just select the series, because there is no way to have BDB, Dark-Hunters (MISSING BTW!), ETC. Just no way!

message 30: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie (jez476) My list:

1.) Gary Oldman's Dracula
2.) Angel
3.) Gerard Butler's Dracula - Dracula 2000 (Craptacular movie by the way.)
4.) Michael - The Lost Boys
5.) Shane - The Lost Boys: The Tribe
6.) Asher - Laurel K Hamilton's Anita Blake series
7.) Barnabus Collins - Ben Cross's version in the Dark Shadows remake from the early 90'a

Dawn (dawn9655) I personally don't care for any of the so-called vampires in the 'Twilight' series... I say "so-called" because they are so, so, so wimpy. And they sparkle for heaven's sake! Vampires are hunters and stalkers.... they do not sparkle.

I would like to add one vamp that no one else seems to know about: Menolly in Yasmine Galenorn's "Otherworld" series. She's one killer vampire!

The Otherworld series takes place in an alternate Seattle area, with three half-fae sisters who are basically the last line of defense between the underworld and demons and us... fun stuff. Very sexual, though, just so you know.

stormhawk | 1184 comments Now I'm SURE that I'm older than everybody here ...

Barnabas Collins from the original Dark Shadows is the coolest vampire ever. Inverness cloak, wolf-headed cane, spiky bangs, oh yeah! And Angelique was cool too. I think I remember her getting fangs at one point in the show, although she was originally presented as a witch.

Lugosi's Dracula set the standard for portrayal of vampires ever after, but Max Schreck's Nosferatu was infinitely creepier. (I recommend Shadow of the Vampire for vamp fans, as well.)

Christopher Lee in the Hammer Films Dracula movies filled my childhood with vampire dreams.

I didn't like Interview with the Vampire, thought Louis was too whiny and Lestat too dark, but I liked him better in The Vampire Lestat. Didn't like Claudia at all, kind of like vampire kiddie porn. Awfulness in a crinolined dress.

There was a made for TV Dracula from the 1970s, starring Jack Palance, who was probably the most unlikely casting choice ever made, but it worked. I thought that drew a lot more on Stoker's Dracula than other versions.

I didn't like Gary Oldman's hair.

message 48: by Marlene (new)

Marlene Slade (marlenekslade) | 4 comments I agree Gary Oldman's hair was horrible in Dracula - but he commanded that role in my opinion.

Claudia's role in Interview has a much deeper mean surrounding the author's real life loss. I am a huge Anne Rice fan and Anne created that character after she lost her young daughter to Leukemia. Louis was Anne during her mourning period and Lestat was Anne's husband Stan. The story of Interview with the Vampire mirrors a huge reflection of a somber time in the Rices' life when a couple was given a daughter, lost her far to young, and wanted her back.

Shadow of the Vampire was well done. I have to buy that one.

Christopher Lee is Campy, but I do like him as well.
