The main character in this book is a female author, and the story begins with her contemplating cheating on her husband. From there on, the chapters alternate between her life if she does have the affair, and her life if she doesn't.

I believe the man she either does or does not have an affair with is named Richard? And her birthday is important somehow as well; possibly the story spans a year from one birthday to the next.

I read this book around 2006-2007, and it would have been relatively recently published at the time.

In the timeline where she has the affair, she wins an award for her book; in the timeline where she doesn't, she is sitting at the same table as the award winner at the ceremony.
