Jessica | 3 comments I got one of those children's story collection books from Half Price Books (a used bookstore) around ten years ago or so. I think the title was something like "____'s Animal Stories" or something, but I'm really not sure.

I remember clearly one of the stories was about a big elephant who was all high and mighty, and a little elephant who thought s/he could outsmart the big elephant, so they challenged big elephant to a competition. Before every competition, the little elephant would talk out loud to itself about its strategy to win the next competition, but it would give itself bad advice so that the big elephant would overhear it and take the little elephant's idea.

One of the competitions was an eating competition, and the little elephant said out loud to itself that it would eat and eat and eat until it won. The big elephant overheard and decided he would do the same thing. During the competition, however, the little elephant would eat some, then run around in circles a little so that some of the food was digested before it would eat again. The big elephant ate way too quickly and made himself sick. The little elephant saw the big elephant lying on the ground and ran over to him, saying it could keep eating for a long time, but the big elephant felt so sick that he pleaded with the little elephant to stop, it had won the competition.

That's the story I most clearly remember. I think most of the stories were set in the jungle, and I think one of them was about a baby sloth who didn't want to memorize his identifying info (where he lived, what his parents names were, etc), but one day he got lost and the info came in handy. I think another story was about a leopard who was obsessed with counting his spots or something?

If anyone can help me in any way, I would greatly appreciate it!

Remember anything about the cover?

Adele | 818 comments Anita Hewett wrote a story called "Big Elephant and Little Elephant" and her animal stories are collected in The Anita Hewett Animal Story Book which was reprinted as The Puffin Book Of Animal Stories

You can see some covers here:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Everything... (has the elephants on the cover)

Jessica | 3 comments I think the illustrations were half-page, every other page or so, and in black and white.

^ This cover looks familiar!! I'm not sure if this is the book (and I can't find any page scans or anything online), but I'm going to order it and let y'all know if it is! Thank you so much, Adele!!
