Alex & Me: How a Scientist and a Parrot Discovered a Hidden World of Animal Intelligence--and Formed a Deep Bond in the Process
by Irene Pepperberg

On September 6, 2007, an African Grey parrot named Alex died prematurely at age thirty-one. His last words to his owner, Irene Pepperberg, were "You be good. I love you."

What would normally be a quiet, very private event was, in Alex's case, headline news. Over the thirty years they had worked together, Alex and Irene had become famous—two pioneers who opened an unprecedented window into the hidden yet vast world of animal minds. Alex's brain was the size of a shelled walnut, and when Irene and Alex first met, birds were not believed to possess any potential for language, consciousness, or anything remotely comparable to human intelligence. Yet, over the years, Alex proved many things. He could add. He could sound out words. He understood concepts like bigger, smaller, more, fewer, and none. He was capable of thought and intention. Together, Alex and Irene uncovered a startling reality: We live in a world populated by thinking, conscious creatures.

Casual Reader | 6 comments Hey Everyone

I use the following sites to look for books at good prices. if they have a deal on books that interest me I might buy them. Mind the topics can be very a lot and so does the quality of the offered deals seem to be. The first 2 sites let you offer whatever you want and depending on how much you want to pay, you unlock more content. The first few books usually only cost you a few euro's, the higher tier you are interested in the more they usually cost. The last site seems to offer deals on buying series of books. I have never actually used this one to buy books so I can't vouch on how well it works.

Humblebundle ( This site originally started the concept on (computer)games but has expanded to books, mobile apps etc. The lowest tier usually costs 1 Dollar for the first few books. And then it goes up. At this moment there are only deals on comics (fairy tail) and audio books. The comic book bundle gives you:
- 5 comics for 1 Dollar
- 25 for 8 (so 7 dollars for the extra 25)
-25 for 15 (so again 7 dollars for the extra 25)
- 17 for 2 (so 2 dollars for 2 extra comics)

A great feature of humblebundle is that it let"s you choose how you want your money to be spend. Do you want to let it all go the books, no problem. You want to focus at the suggested charities, feel free. If you don't like the suggested charities there is a list out of which you can choose the one you like to support and choose that part of your money flows there. It's all up to you. :)

Storybundle: ( This site usually starts at about 4-5 $. And has 1 extra tier at about 15$. Same system as humble bundle, you get all tiers if you pay the maximum amount.
Storybundle also has a less complex system of choosing how to spend your money compared to the one at humblebundle. Your choices are limited to the authors and to storybundle itself. You can also chose to spend a fixed number to a charity, but you can only chose out of 1 or more pre-chosen charities.

The last site (again I have never actually used this one) is called ( has a wide selection of deals if you buy a or part of a series.

I hope my writing was clear and understandable for you guys because it has been quite a while since I last wrote in English.

Have fun with the suggestions. :)

Washington's Crossing (Pivotal Moments in American History)

As David Hackett Fischer recounts in this riveting history, George Washington--and many other Americans--refused to let the Revolution die. On Christmas night, as a howling nor'easter struck the Delaware Valley, he led his men across the river and attacked the exhausted Hessian garrison at Trenton, killing or capturing nearly a thousand men. A second battle of Trenton followed within days. The Americans held off a counterattack by Lord Cornwallis's best troops, then were almost trapped by the British force. Under cover of night, Washington's men stole behind the enemy and struck them again, defeating a brigade at Princeton. The British were badly shaken. In twelve weeks of winter fighting, their army suffered severe damage, their hold on New Jersey was broken, and their strategy was ruined.

By Willard Sterne Randall

From his less than auspicious start in 1755 on the Caribbean Island of Nevis to his untimely death in a duel with his old enemy Aaron Burr in 1804, Alexander Hamilton, despite his short life, left a huge legacy.

Orphaned at thirteen and apprenticed in a counting house, Hamilton learned principles of business that helped him create the American financial system and invent the modern corporation. But first the staunch, intrepid Hamilton served in the American Revolution, acting as General Washington’s spymaster. Forging a successful legal career, Hamilton coauthored the Federalist Papers and plunged into politics. Irresistibly attractive, he was a man of many gifts, but he could be arrogant and at times a poor judge of character.

The Last Sin Eater:
A captivating tale of suffering, seeking, and redemption set in Appalachia in the 1850s, The Last Sin Eater is the story of a community committed to its myth of a human “sin eater,” who absolves the dead of their sins, and the ten-year-old child who shows them the Truth. All that matters for young Cadi Forbes is finding the one man who can set her free from the sin that plagues her, the sin that has stolen her mother’s love from her and made her wish she could flee life and its terrible injustice. But Cadi doesn’t know that the “sin eater” is seeking as well. Before their journeys are over, Cadi and the sin eater must face themselves, each other, and the One who will demand everything from them in exchange for the answers they seek.

Here's a little info about the book that Victoria mentioned above:

A breathtaking fantasy romance inspired by Cinderella…
Trystan spends her days in bleak isolation, with little hope that she will ever be free from her stepmother’s cruel whims. When a wealthy and influential neighbor offers her both a fortune and her freedom, Trystan must decide whether to pay the price. Who is she willing to betray in order to gain her independence? What is she willing to sacrifice in order to pursue her forbidden relationship with the compelling young man whose face haunts her dreams? Trapped between the desire for love and the fate of her kingdom, Trystan attends the glittering Royal Masque, where she learns that her actions may have betrayed her prince, and thrust them both into a nightmare of conspiracy and deception.
If she is to have any hope of redemption, Trystan must escape a dangerous web of duplicity, espionage and intrigue, though she may be forced to sacrifice her own happy ending to prevent her kingdom from falling into the hands of a ruthless adversary.

An unforgettable tale of romance, intrigue and suspense, Traitor’s Masque is the first book of the Andari Chronicles, a series of interconnected but stand-alone fairy tale retellings.
