[[Roleplay between me (Ashtail) and Xerinus (Barkpaw).]]

The warm, bright sun was shining in a big blue sky. Puffy clouds dotted the atmosphere. Trees in the forest swayed in the strong breeze. Birds chirped and mice scuttled in the undergrowth.
A cream and gray cat, a tom, strolled through a forest. Muscles rippled through his pelt with each pawstep. He was solidly built, and yet had a soft demeanor. He had a friendly gleam in his bluish-green eyes. But his calm attitude could not be mistaken for his power and strength. He was a dangerous tom when he wanted to be.
His ears swiveled. He could hear the lake lapping against the shore ahead. He sped up and eventually, the wonder of a shining lake filled his view. It glittered in the afternoon sun, blinding his eyesight for a heartbeat. He looked away. A deceased fish replaced his blindness. It laid in the sand, stuck between some jutted rocks.
The tom wrinkled his nose at the disgusting sight and turned away. He padded onto a grassy patch near the shoreline and settled down into it. His eyes drifted to the shoreline. Several pebbles and rocks dotted the wet sand.
The large tom felt relaxed and closed his eyes contentedly.

Xerinus | 34 comments Grass and moss flattened under the paws of a young, grey tom as he pushed his way through the undergrowth, his tail swishing back and forth behind him as he moved. Birds sang in their varying voices above him, each individual bird sounding distinct in its own manner.
As he drew nearer to the lake, and the sound of water rushed into his ears, the smells around him began to change, from lush, green forest smells to damp, fishy smells. He smelled a cat nearby, the cat was Thunderclan, nothing to worry about, and something that smelled rotten and vile, that burned his senses.
The cat seemed like a decent destination. The young tom turned in the direction of the other cat's scent and increased his speed.
He found his mentor, Ashtail, resting beside the lake, the large cream colored cat looked rather peaceful, lying there. "Hello, Ashtail." he said in a cheerful tone.

The relaxed tom, Ashtail, opened his pretty eyes. He had scented his apprentice long before he came into earshot. His tail flicked.
"Hello, Barkpaw," He meowed with a bright tone. "I assume you've finished your duties in the camp?"
Ashtail's inquisitive gaze rested on Barkpaw. He had sent the newly apprenticed cat to tend to the elders nests, to replace the old moss full of ticks with new and fresh moss.
But Barkpaw's assignment wasn't just for the elders' comfort.
If the apprentice completed his chore obediently and responsibly, Ashtail would take him on his first hunt. But he hadn't revealed that to Barkpaw yet.
Ashtail lifted his paw and stretched it out in front of Barkpaw. His claws were unsheathed, but not aggressively. Just contentedly. A few blades of grass tore beneath his thorn-sharp claws.
He waited for his apprentice's response.

Ashtail shook his head.
"No, Barkpaw," He meowed. "Job well done."
His tail flicked in the sudden silence. For a few heartbeats, both cats gazed out at the lake.
"Would you like to go hunting?" Ashtail meowed, interrupting the peace. He spoke to Barkpaw, but his eyes didn't waver from the beautiful view. "If you finished your duty, as you say you did, then I think you deserve to go on your first hunt."
Ashtail's fur blew in the strong breeze and scents from the forest filled his nose.
He turned and gazed at his apprentice, waiting for his reaction.

Xerinus | 34 comments Barkpaw's eyes lit up with excitement when Ashtail asked him if he would like to go hunting "yes please." He said trying to contain his excitement as he looked into his mentor's bluish-green, almost teal, eyes. The cool Greenleaf breeze wafted past his nose, bringing to him the scents of everything that he loved about the forest, the trees, the flowers, the bushes, and he cought a small whiff of camp, this made his excitement even harder to contain.

Ashtail purred with amusement when he saw Barkpaw's excitement. This was the most excitement he'd ever seen from an apprentice.
"Alright," He meowed cheerily. "Then we should be going. If we're out too long then the clan will wonder where we've gone. Come with me and I'll show you how it's done."
He rose to his paws and rested his tail on his apprentice before padding off silently into the forest, away from the lake. He embraced the canopy of trees as the scents changed from sharp, oily fish and water, to heavy damp forest scents.

Barkpaw silently followed Ashtail into the forest, wondering where they could be going. As they went along, he turned his attention to the smells surrounding them, trees, grasses, mosses all pleasant smells in comparison to the dead fish.

((It's okay.))

Ashtail stopped. He scented a mouse several fox-lengths ahead.
"Stop and watch me," He murmured.
He dropped into a hunting crouch and put all of his weight into his haunches. Then, he crept forward pawstep by pawstep, keeping his tail still but not touching the ground. He made sure he didn't disturb anything, such as stepping on a twig, that would alarm the mouse.
When he was close enough, Ashtail leaped soundlessly through the air and landed on the mouse before it knew what was happening. He swiftly ended its life and gave thanks to StarClan.
He picked up his catch and padded to Barkpaw.
"When you try, make sure your tail is completely still and slightly lifted off the ground." He meowed, his voice muffled by the mouse's fur. "If you have any questions, ask now. Or if you're confident enough you can just go and begin your first hunt."
Ashtail's bluish-green eyes rested on his apprentice.
