It's not really because he's a bully or anything, this guy is big, bulky, and is always made fun of and he doesn't want his sister hanging out with these people. Later we learnt that his sister's boyfriend is getting hurt. This is not because his father abuses him (who is an alcoholic btw) it is because the father hits his brother. The thing is though, is that this brother takes the pains of the people he cares about. So after their father gets drunk or something, they get transferred to an older couple's home, but this guy knows that he can't care for those people because they will eventually die with pain and he has to take that pain. The plot moves forward and the boyfriend eventually ends up in the original brother and sister's house. Though they sleep in different rooms, the guy with the bad reputation grows close to everyone including their parents. This shows when the original brother who plays lacrosse, get's a concussion, but it quickly blows over because the "bad reputation" guy takes the pain since he's at the game (Note: he can only take pain if you are near him). That's pretty much what I can tell you, I read this book about 4 years ago, but it might have been published before, thanks for your feedback!
