Did anyone else side with Lucy?

Katie I know Emily Giffin really tried to force us to favor Shea over Lucy, but honestly if my father started dating a girl he had raised practically as my sister I think I would have reacted pretty negatively too! Especially considering her mother was barely in the ground.

Amy Rodriguez I agree with you on this one. There was something so very creepy about this to me. It wasn't the age difference, it was the fact that he had practically raised her as his own daughter, and the fact about her mother barely being in the ground.

Kelly Definitely. I wonder if she writes some of her best friend characters - Darcy, Margo, and now Lucy - as overly brash and spoiled on purpose so we feel more empathy for her main characters.

Alicia Prevost Entirely agreed. Lucy had every single right to freak out and I hate that it was presented like she was in the wrong. Also how hated how quickly and easily Lucy came around.

Sarah This book made it impossible not to put yourself in the shoes of the characters dealing with the situation. So I kept picturing my dad - who pretty much raised our childhood bestie because her father was not around - hooking up with a best girlfriend and PUKE. Beyond gross. Probably Giffin would have done better if Shea just idolized coach, being from Walker, period. Not being a family friend. It just made it so goshdarned gross to all readers. Especially with all that BS that it started AFTER Mrs. Carr had died. BULLCRAP!

That's awful that you were dismissed like that. I am sure it is difficult for Giffin to hear these comments from her fans but I find it impossible to believe that not a single editor or early reader warned her that the book would be controversial and uncomfortable for many readers. And let's face it, it just wasn't very well written in general as far as plot and character development goes.
