Yesterday, I saw the 45th anniversary edition of the movie based on The Godfather by Mario Puzo. The movie has, in my opinion, elevated the novel to classic status, though the novel is pure pulp fiction. My question: Can you think of other movies that have elevated the position of the books they are based on?

I would probably add "The Silence of the Lambs" to the list. Harris's novel is not bad--you might almost say it transcends its genre all by itself--but Demme's movie is an American classic.

Probably heresy to say this but possibly "The Natural" which is my least favorite Malamud book.
