Jane (janeboniface) | 123 comments The story of explorer Robert Falcon Scott's ill fated expedition to the South Pole in 1910 - 1912. This book does justice I think to the group of extraordinary men who endured incredibly harsh conditions in an effort to be the first to reach the South Pole. Despite all the difficulties the final party of 5 men manage to reach the pole, only to discover the Norwegian party has beaten them by 4 weeks. Extremely disappointed they begin their return journey but succumb to the blizzard, hunger and exhaustion just one days walk from their next supply depot. We know this is how their story ends, but this does not lessen the impact of the tragedy, as the author has given us an insight into the men's characters and it is hard not to admire their amazing resilience, determination, courage and humour in a desperate situation. A great read, well told, and all the more gripping as we know it is true. I think it would be a good Read Aloud and I will be putting it in our Young Adults collection and promoting it to our more advanced readers, especially the hard-to-impress adventure lovers :-)

Joanna | 14 comments This isn't a review as such but a recommendation to any schools in Auckland wanting a fabulous author visit. Joanna has at this stage only written one book, Into the White, but she is an exceptional speaker. She had the boys (100 yr6) captivated from the very beginning. Her talk was very interactive with a lot of audience participation. I highly recommend her.

Joanna | 14 comments Just a heads-up. The Joanna who wrote the post is me, Joanna Baynes, Librarian at King's School, not Joanna Grochowicz the author!

Ha ha. Thanks Joanna, good to hear the other Joanna is a great speaker as well as great writer. If we were in Auckland I would definitely want to have her over to talk to the kids.
