Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2423 comments That is a great list with some amazing titles and by the look of it there are some I can't wait for you to start and hear your thoughts on also for faithful and the fallen there is a BR for it on the 18th I think and I'll be joining I'm not sure if your joining as well but if your not I can't wait to hear your thoughts on it

Anyway good luck with the challenge

message 5: by Mayim (new)

Mayim de Vries | 2918 comments Thanks! Hobb and McKillip are best female fantasy writers out there for me at least.

message 6: by Mayim (new)

Mayim de Vries | 2918 comments And am I started Malice just yesterday normally I read quite fast but I might join the later BR for this series if I'll be busy with life.

message 7: by Chris (new)

Chris (haughtc) | 1748 comments Great list. Love the title too.

Hope to see you for that Gwynne buddy read

You've done a much better job than most of us cleaning up series. Oddly you and I have very few completed series in common but your list of series you want to do is heavily populated with series I have up to date or completed and I'd like to tackle ones from your completed list.

message 9: by Bill (new)

Bill | 2150 comments Glad you joined us. List looks good. Very high completion rate.

I look forward to address this imbalance!

Good luck Mayim. You have a great list here.

message 13: by Mayim (new)

Mayim de Vries | 2918 comments I have put Malice on hold as the writing style is killing me and started Gentleman Bastards.
I guess I'm not doing so well this month!

Niki Hawkes - The Obsessive Bookseller | 7417 comments Mod
I love gentleman bastards! Good compromise lol.

message 15: by Mayim (new)

Mayim de Vries | 2918 comments I guess it is time for the update (I still haven't figured out how this is supposed to work, so please excuse me if I do something wrong):

I am now up to date with the Gentlemen Bastards, which joined the ranks of my most favourite series from the absolute love of The Lies of Locke Lamorato Red Seas Under Red Skies finally to Republic of Thieves.

I also started Green Rider and will be continuing with the series *sigh* yet another one on my list.

Truth to be told, all this I have read to avoid Malice but I finally ploughed through it and now I am onto Valour.

Lunar Chronicles are great, one of my YA favourites (but I read them on those GR days when I didn't review so cannot offer you more) I am sure you will love the series!

Thanks Scott :D

message 20: by Solseit (new)

Solseit | 1460 comments I love how you structured your reading folder!
The list of completed books is quite impressive too!

I am curious to know what you think of Fallen Kingdoms. I read the first one - a very easy read - but the blurb (made for GoT fans) is really misleading. It genuinely should be the other way around: Once you read Falling Kingdom, you can graduate to a real fantasy story and read A song of ice and fire. Most certainly NOT the other way around!

message 21: by Mayim (new)

Mayim de Vries | 2918 comments This is very interesting question Aristea. My relationship with this series is a complicated one akin to Stockholm syndrome in some respects. Whereas writing takes this series swiftly out of bad through atrocious and lands it in the realm of irredeemable, the story itself is interesting (although truth to be told, the last part was so bad that I don't know if I can muster any strength to push through the grand finale).

message 22: by Mayim (new)

Mayim de Vries | 2918 comments I finished The Faithful and the Fallen (what a failure).

This month I plan to finish
1. Red Queen Wars
2. Broken Earth.

Also, I have started Extropia: Mind Game.

message 23: by Mayim (new)

Mayim de Vries | 2918 comments I'm very happy I finished Red Queen's War (what a letdown) and I returned to Kate Daniels. I enjoyed no 6. I think shouldn't have binge read it previously all at once. The low rating might have resulted from an overdose.

I read Extropia, but I don't think I will continue (I started only because I got a review copy).

I'm starting Sailing to Sarantium with the Kay reading team so that will be a new one (but that should be easy as it's only a duology).

Saul the Heir of Isauldur (krinnok) | 209 comments I recommend you add Memory, Sorrow and Thorn , and pretty much all Tad Williams in general. Also, I've heard great things about Guy Gavriel Kay.

That's a pretty amazing list! I've read some of those, but heard about many of the others. I just recently got to "meet" the Gormenghast series, though I haven't yet read it.

Saul, I just checked and both series actually are on my TBR. (I tend to avoid looking at the list because it gives me heart attack, also if you take into consideration that I ofter read books from outside it!)

Kay is great, I discovered him during the recent Tigana buddy read here and enjoyed it immensely.

message 26: by Mayim (last edited Sep 07, 2017 03:30AM) (new)

Mayim de Vries | 2918 comments I started two new duologues (because why not)

1. Baru Cormorant I recommend it, but it is one of the most brutal dystopia I encountered in fantasy

2. Sailing to Sarantium - buddy read now with the Kay squad if anyone wants to join

message 27: by Bill (new)

Bill | 2150 comments Hadn't realized Baru Cormorant was a series. Looks like another entry on my list.

message 28: by Timelord Iain (new)

Timelord Iain | 16586 comments Is it confirmed as a duology?... I'm looking to read it for the mask cover... and I saw the 2nd book title... but one of the Q&As say its contracted for 3 books but he's going to try and finish in 2 if he can...

message 29: by Mayim (new)

Mayim de Vries | 2918 comments I like the fact that he doesn't rush and doesn't give in to pressure. duology would make sense for me. Either way, it is a good book but not for everyone because of its rather specific design.

message 30: by Mayim (new)

Mayim de Vries | 2918 comments New series opened:

1. Sarantine Mosaic - luckily it's only a duology and I'll finish this month;
2. Tiger and Del - well dear me 1 down, 6 more to go

message 31: by Mayim (new)

Mayim de Vries | 2918 comments Slow month, I only finished Sarantine mosaic and I might start a couple of new series in October...

message 33: by Mayim (new)

You're up to date on a couple of them, which in my book says it's out of your hands and therefore shouldn't count against you haha.

Mayim de Vries | 2918 comments Niki Hawkes wrote: "You're up to date on a couple of them, which in my book says it's out of your hands and therefore shouldn't count against you haha."

So I followed your advice Niki. :D

New Series:

Ironhand's Daughter - Gemmell

Continued:

Tiger and Del - 2/7

This has been a month for standalones, it seems.

Sweet! Hope it doesn't lead you astray lol.

I'm looking forward to when the group gets to the last tiger and del novel. I've been hanging on to it for years. Are you liking them so far?

I was the odd one out for Sword Singer. I didn't like it as much as the others, but I want to continue with the series.

Niki Hawkes - The Obsessive Bookseller | 7417 comments Mod
I think that's kind of where I was at by that point in the series.

message 39: by Mayim (new)

Mayim de Vries | 2918 comments Well this is awful: two new series started:

Greatcoats 2/4
Sevenwaters 1/7

and a third one on the way as I have BR planned: Fionavar Tapestry 0/3

LOL

message 41: by Mayim (new)

Mayim de Vries | 2918 comments don't laugh, I know it's nothing for some people but it goes against absolutely everything I sand for :D

why am I doing this to myself? ^^

message 42: by Mayim (new)

Mayim de Vries | 2918 comments OK, I have decided to ditch Rothfuss and Morgan Rhodes. The former I was never interested in continuing anyway and the latter is the absolutely worst series I have ever read. The penultimate instalment made my eyes bleed.

Also wow, look at my progress:
Tiger and Del 3/7
Hawk Queen - finished

Divine Cities - currently reading the final instalment.

I almost do not feel bad about starting the Fionavar Tapestry. :)

message 43: by Niki Hawkes, I made it past GOTM... barely (new)

Niki Hawkes - The Obsessive Bookseller | 7417 comments Mod
Great update! I abandoned Morgan Rhodes as well lol.

message 44: by Mayim (new)

Mayim de Vries | 2918 comments I feel kind of bad about it because I persevered up until book five but there is no point in more self inflicted pain just to finish this trash.

message 45: by Niki Hawkes, I made it past GOTM... barely (new)

Niki Hawkes - The Obsessive Bookseller | 7417 comments Mod
That's an admirable commitment up to book 5. I didn't make it past book 1 lol. The further you get in a series, the harder is seems to put it down. Sunk costs and all. Although it also seems that every time I make myself read something anyway, I regret it.

message 46: by Mayim (new)

Mayim de Vries | 2918 comments Exactly! So I decided that finishing for the sake of finishing kills the fun of reading and I never enjoyed this series anyway.

message 47: by Tammie (new)

Tammie | 4107 comments Congrats on abandoning a couple of series. I should probably just add Rothfuss to my abandoned pile too. By the time he publishes the last book I will have forgotten the others and there is no way I'm going to re-read them. Also I don't like him as a person after his recent comments about fans.

message 48: by Mayim (new)

Mayim de Vries | 2918 comments I saw this discussion and it was one of the decisive factors.

message 49: by Mayim (new)

Mayim de Vries | 2918 comments Progress:

Kate Daniels 8/10
Divine Cities - finished

And so that I do not feel too great about myself:

A Land Fit for Heroes - Morgan
Fionavar Tapestry - Kay

Two steps forward, two steps back :D

message 50: by Mayim (last edited Jan 09, 2018 03:01AM) (new)

Mayim de Vries | 2918 comments Not a great month.

New Series:

The Curse of Chalion (World of the Five Gods 1) - Bujold

Continued
Sevenwaters 2 - Mariller (2/7)
Tiger and Del - 4/7

*sigh* I have forgotten I have started Dragonlance Chronicles reread somewhere along the way so that is another 1/3
