It is 1944 – Angelo is injured but determined to make it to St. Cecila where Eva is. He has 5 miles to walk. He is limping and moving slowly. Once he gets to St. Cecila’s, Mario finds him. He is looking for Eva. Mario tells him they haven’t seen her for 3 days, the German’s took her.

Annie | 116 comments Interesting that a priest who has been badly beaten is not aided sooner. Were the villages he traveled through now deserted, or were the villagers too afraid to assist?

Eva's letter (confession?) is written on the same day that Angelo arrives at Santa Cecilia. Under the date is written "Via Tasso" which was the Headquarters of the Nazi Gestapo and SS in Rome during the war. http://www.visitlazio.com/en/dettagli...

1929 Florence – Eva lives with her parent and her adoptive grandparents. They are going to raise their grandson Angelo, whose mother died when his baby sister was born. He has an partial leg and was sent to live with his grandparents in Italy. Eva was looking forward to him coming – they would be great friends. When he got there, he found that he was Catholic and she was Jewish and although she wanted to be his sister, he said they couldn’t because they were too different. She wrote confessions in her diary and shared them with Angelo.

Annie | 116 comments Enjoyed the exchange between Angelo and Eva when he was describing his mother.
"...Nonna fusses. She tries to make me happy. Nonna wants to give me love. But it isn't the same. Mamma 'was' love. And she didn't even have to try. She just...was."

1938 – Mussolini has started passing laws against Jews like they did in Germany. Eva is having regular nightmares. Her father tries to comfort her but he is not sleeping and is worried. Her brothers are constantly fighting. She can no longer go to University and doesn’t know what to do with her life. She wants to talk to Angelo, he is at the seminary. She use to visit him often but he told her to stop, they weren’t really family and the other boys make jokes about them. She had been there in three years. She went to see him. She told him what was going on, how she felt about him and he told her he wanted to be a priest. She told him what she believed in and that things were only going to get worse.

Vienna – More treachery for Jews. Felix’s father is in Austria. They have taken him. Angelo comes to hear Eva in a concert only to find out that she had been kicked out of the orchestra for being Jewish. They take a walk. His favorite store has a sign, No Jews, another has a sign No Jews or dogs. They sat and ate gelato. Eva is playing violin for her Uncle Felix, her teacher, she is playing something that she put her own twist on. At first he is angered but then he realizes the talent she has and has her continue to play her own works.

Eva noticed the mocking cartoons, the occasional derogatory sign, and the articles in the papers - not much has changed throughout history, how sad!

Looked up blackshirts - usually ex-soldiers who's job was to bring into line those who opposed Mussolini.

I found the information about the history of leaving stones at the graves interesting!

I don't believe I've read any other WWII historical fiction that take in Italy. Not a common setting, is it?

Grosseto – The family went on their annual trip to the beach. It was like old times. Angelo and Eve were on the beach looking for shells. They swam and got caught I in a storm. The ran (as fast and Angelo could) to find shelter in a small shed. They were play sword fighting with fishing poles and Angelo caught Eva around the waist. His lips to her ears. They turned and has a passionate kiss. They returned after dinner. Eva ran to her room and was giddy, Angelo went out on the deck to ponder. Camillo found him there. He told Angelo he could marry Eva and return to the states to protect her. But he knew Angelo wanted to become a priest. When Angelo asked Camillo what he should do, he said become a priest and help the coalition to aid the Jews. He needed to protect Eva. The next day, the family was visited by their hosts and told they needed to leave ASAP. Camillo said they would leave in the morning, the hosts wanted them to leave immediately.

Rome – Angelo spent his two days of his vacation in Rome. He talked to the Monsignor and told him about his feeling for Eva. He told her he couldn’t be with her as Eva was Jewish and he was Catholic, he must forget her and follow his destiny and become a priest. He spent his last day of his vacation with Eva in Florence showing her all the art that he loved. It was the history of Christianity. He told her she was right when she had said that he was pushed into becoming a priest. He said that his Hfather didn’t want him to be a burden on a family, the priesthood would be the best place for him with his bad leg. He told her that he loved her but he loved the Church too. She said he loved it more and that he didn’t love her enough. He wanted to walk her home but she was having none of it. He said he wouldn’t leave her now and she responded, he already did. She told him to GO. He left her with a heavy heart.

1940 – Shivah – They came for Felix and instead of going with them, he shot himself in the head. He was dead. They sat Shivah for him, Angelo was there also. Eva wasn’t talking to anyone and Angelo, although she hadn’t seen him since he was ordained 7 months before, he tried to get her to talk. He gets her to talk by asking her to explain Shivah. She told him that she sat Shiva after he was ordained. She took a string from his cassock and tied it with the fabric from Felix. A couple months after Felix died, Eva’s father took her to the beach and told her that he was going to attempt to go to Austria and get her grandfather. Eva thought he was going to go to his death and then she would have no one left. Camillo said she would always have Angelo, and she replied that she would never have Angelo. She will have no one.

Eva staying in Florence wasn’t an option any more. Now that Italy was German’s enemy being an Italian citizen wasn’t going to protect her. He went to her that evening, trying to convince her to leave. She finally asked, Why does he care, he had gone out of his way to make her feel invisible, like she doesn’t exist for him. It was like a slap to him. She was his vise on his heart and his vice.

Trudy, Great comments! I love this author's descriptive writing in this chapter: "If you look down on Florence from the hills surrounding her, you see the domes, the bell towers, the medieval castle ramparts, and it's almost as if no time has passed at all--like the Renaissance is still in full swing. There's a sense of timelessness, of being transported back five hundred years when chapels like this were being built." After reading that I wanted to book a flight, lol!

I loved this quote from Eva's explanation of Shivah: "Grieving is not a time to worry about appearances. There should be no judgment in grief. People should be allowed to grieve in any way they need. It is a kindness to the mourners. Shivah is about those left behind."
Beautifully said!

Interesting that Angelo and Eva have different ideas of where she will go once in Rome. The scene from their childhood must be to show us a bit of Eva's devious side before she paves her own path.

They visit her family before she is delivered to St. Cecilia’s. When they arrive, the nun complains that they were expected earlier and tells Angelo he is wanted elsewhere. He leaves and Eva is led to a little room and told to meet up for vespers. The convent is old and she thing about 200 years out of date. She tried to play the violin but the room echos and she is afraid of calling ghosts. She wonders what she is being saved for.

She is walking the streets like she belongs there and is not scared. Someone grabs her around the waist. It is Angelo. He kisses her like his life depended on it. She tells him she is going to warn her uncle and he tells her he has already been taken. He takes her back to the Vatican and hides her in a small room until the Germans are gone. He leaves her and wanders the streets and then comes back and tells her what is going on. He has her wait again and he watches as they take the prisoners and put them in train cars and leave them there for hours, with no room to sit or move, no water and no place to relieve themselves. After about 8 hours the train leaves.

Looting started in Rome a couple of days after the Ghetto was emptied out. Mario and his family showed up at St. Cecelia’s. Giulia is too week to travel and the boarders have all been blocked. Giulia wasn’t producing enough milk for the baby and Angelo found her a wet nurse. Eva was out one day to get rations. She had Mario’s violin to sell if she could find something to buy. She sat on a bench next to a German waiting for a streetcar. She was ordered to play. With a gun to her head, she played Ave Maria. The German was in tears. He said forgive him and walked straight in the track of the streetcar. When the German authorities asked who pushed him, no one said anything but people pointed at Eva as she was the last to talk to him. Eva said he walked into the path on his own. They took her to the station to question her more. She was left in a room, questioned, make to play again, offered a job and they was allowed to leave. Angelo was there to pick her up.

Angelo took Eva to the Church of the Sacred Heart so they could talk and not cause anyone harm. He asked her what happened. She told him. He told her he had never been so scared. She said she had. He knelt to pray and ended up prostrate on the floor like he was for his ordination. When he completed his prayers, he noticed that Eva was praying Shabbat. She explained they reach for things they can’t have and then the wash it away. He said he keeps reaching for Eve. She said she has always been his but he has never been hers. “Life is hell shot with just enough heaven to make the pains of hope all the sharper.” She tells him loving her doesn’t have to be hard, God forgives. She tells him she knows two things, 1. She loves him, always had and always will, 2. No one knows the nature of God. They are going to keep up the charade they are living. She will go to work and do what she can to help in the war efforts.

They were rounding up the last of the Jews in Florence. They were at Angelo’s grandparents when Angelo arrived. The Italian that was with the SS was a man who use to court Eva. Angelo called him out on that, embarrassing him in front of the SS man. Angelo told them that Eva married and move to Milan and that was the last he’s seen her. It was hard to communicate between North & South. Meanwhile, Eva was being questioned about where she lived by her new gestapo boss. She told him the truth which surprised him. He also told her about a Jewish girl who was reporting other Jews to them to save herself. He wanted Eva to reports and Jew sightings. Once day she was emptying a trash can and stumbled upon a jar of gold that was taken from the Jews. She found Giulia wedding band. She took a couple handfuls of gold and brought it Angelo to use. Camillo’s money had run out. He didn’t like it but would use it. Giulia was excited to have her wedding band back.

The day before Christmas Eve, Angelo presents Monsignor O’Flannery a truck filled with wrapped gifts for him to distribute to the refugees. Angelo told O’Flannery about the gold that Eva found and has been pilfering from the Germans. Angelo had gone out and bought gifts. They delivered the gifts on Christmas eve and invited Eva to join them (dressed as a nun) on Christmas Day to make more deliveries. She brought her violin and played Christmas Carols. O’Flannery was charmed by her. Sometime in January, Eva hit pay dirt. She had befriended Captain von Essen’s wife and she like to talk about all kinds of things. They were walking one day and came upon an abandoned bookstore. She was to find something rare and valuable for her husband to present to Hitler. Needless to say Eva had no interest in that goal but she did find her own treasure, a printing press that would put Aldo back in business.

Eva was supposed to meet Aldo for a drop of documents at a bakery after work but she ended up with a last-minute task at work that made her an hour late. She hoped he was still there. He wasn’t there so she ate her pasty and left. She saw him on the street and walked toward him. They heard a voice, Aldo told her to walk on, she did. The voice belonged to her boss Captain von Essen. She watched as von Essan make Aldo drop his pants, showing he was circumcised and shot him. He was left on the street. After some time and Eva knew von Essan was gone, she went to Aldo, took the papers and heading to meet up with Angelo. Angelo saw her and then the blood. He stripped her looking for the wound and then she told him what happened. She tried to get Angelo to love her and feel her up. He let her but didn’t participate. She finally turned away embarrassed and broke into tears. He help her, didn’t blame her, and never let on how much he felt. When she was asleep, he went to the church and prayed.

Some big wigs came in from Germany, not happy at the resistance not being stopped in Italy. It was very important for Captain von Essan to impress these people. He want to have a gala and he needed Eva to help him. She told him about Villa d’Medici. He needed entertainment and remembered that she played the violin – she was going to be the entertainment. She was not happy about that. Greta was going to get her some clothes to wear and told her to invite her brother. Greta wanted to show that Eva had protection. The party happened, Angelo was there. After the performance, Capt von Essan gave her some notes and a key to a room. Angelo was suspicious of his intensions and wanted the room switched. Then Eva told him her real fear, that St. Cecilia was going to be raided along with other churches in Rome and the Vatican. Angelo had to warn Fr. O’Finnagan.

Although Angelo had papers to allow him to be out after curfew, the Captain told Angelo he would give him a ride home. Angelo had no choice but to accept. Instead of taking him home, they drove to St. Cecilia’s where it was raided. They went through the cloistered nuns, the crypts, the Mother Superior cursing them as they went. They found no one. Fr. Angelo said he would walk home from there. He had the Mother sound the Alarm that the Germans were raiding and prayed that all would survive.
