“Anything! Anything! Mr. Manx! Anything for you! My life! For you!”
Like trashy Trash Can man in The Stand.

Summer (paradisecity) | 17 comments For those of you listening to the audiobook, listen past the credits when you get to the end. There's a short hidden chapter and then an interview with the author that aren't in the text version.

Greg | 383 comments He does something similar in The Fireman. It was in the text but it was hidden after the acknowledgments in that one.

There was Craddock McDermott, who claimed that his spirit existed in a favorite suit of his. There is the Walking Backwards Man, who has an awful watch that runs in reverse. You do not want to meet the Walking Backwards Man in a dark alley, child! Or anywhere else! There is the True Knot, who live on the road and are in much the same line of work as myself.
Anyone get these references? I recognized The True Knot from Doctor Sleep.

I believe it might be from Heart Shaped Box

Man, is Wayne going to have anyone or any teeth left? This is grim dude.

I flew through this, fastest thousand pages ever. Excellent audio read accompaniment.

definitely one of those books that is hard to put down ... or in this case hard to stop listening to

message 60: by Greg (new) - rated it 5 stars

Greg | 383 comments Half way through. I am enjoying it. Much better than last months selection. But that one just didn't resonate with me.

Annerlee | 271 comments I've just started listening, so am way behind you all. I can already tell that the narration is excellent.

I often hitch a lift into work in the mornings whilst listening to an audiobook. I suspect this will add an interesting take on the book...

I have a copy of the book. It has "Hold these. I might be a while. 9" in it. But it's a picture of a card with the writing on it. The 9 is underneath with a circle around it.

That might be why the kindle/ereader version might miss it out. It might not have the ability to display pictures mixed in with text.

Just a bit of random trivia that you all probably know anyway, my copy is N0S 4R2 as I'm in the UK. I think it's cool that it shas a different spelling as we pronounce it differently.

message 63: by Lena (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lena | 2683 comments Anyone know why 9?

message 64: by Greg (new) - rated it 5 stars

Greg | 383 comments Just finished. Now the only Hill novel I have left to read is Heart Shaped Box.

Mulgrew did a fantastic job on this novel as well. The ending I thought was particularly good and I wasn't sure exactly where it was going which is always a plus.

I also find it fantastically coincidental that during the interview with Joe Hill at the end of the novel he mentions Lonesome Dove and how it was his favorite book/audio book for a long time. Since I just "read" that before starting this one. 👍

message 65: by Char (new) - rated it 5 stars

Char | 17501 comments LOVED Lonesome Dove! Westerns are not my thing, but I'm so glad I read that one. I might have to see if the library has an audio of it.

Speaking of which, my library audio holds keep on coming in and since I have to claim them within 4 days of receiving the notice that they're ready, I don't think I'm going to be able to listen to this one again.

I'm pretty psyched to see that nearly everyone is enjoying it, though.

Lastly, I would like to recommend the graphic novel Wraith. It goes into the history of Charlie Manx and tells a bit more about Christmasland. I thought it was excellent.

K.L. Phelps (kl_phelps) | 180 comments While I like western films, I haven't read all that many, but all this praise of Lonesome Dove has me reconsidering.

I looked at it too. There seems to be very mixed opinions on it though. It seems like a love or hate experience...

Jennifer | 450 comments Lena wrote: "Anyone know why 9?"

I didn't really enjoy the book so I can't remember. I'll dig out my copy again later and have a look to see if I can see any reason why,

Jennifer | 450 comments Lena wrote: "Anyone know why 9?"

I had a quick read through the pages around the quote and I think it refers to Manx saying he would take Bing to Christmasland after their 10th mission, and they only manage 9. Somewhere he says that the 10th will come but they might have to wait a while.

Lena | 2683 comments Thanks Jennifer!

Annerlee | 271 comments I'm about half way through (Section 61 on audiobook whatever that means) and the Wraith has just arrived at Vic's. Just thought I'd take stock and offer some comments,

I can see that it was important to fill in details of Vic's life as she grows up, but I've found the narrative quite repetitive and lacking direction. We seem to have meandered through quite a few side plots and I've found myself hanging on to (what I think will be) the main storyline in my head, quietly wondering what the main thrust of the book will be ... Come on! Let's get moving here! Manx has been a vegetable for far too long and the gas mask man is dying of boredom (Who's paying his bills?)

With the trip to the lake and 4th July celebrations, I feel that Vic's family is becoming the focal point. There have been some more intimate family dynamics for the first time and I'm hoping the main story kicks off here ? I could be wrong... we may meander further?

I agree that Kate Mulgrew is an excellent narrator though! I love the voices and her intonation really brings the book to life.

Lena | 2683 comments Vic's family is the focal point. Her husband, ex husband, is a gem. We should all be so lucky.

He really is a gem. A cuddly teddy bear biker ; )

Monica Go | 916 comments I m re reading this and i would really like to listen to it. Does anybody have an audiobook version that can pass on to me?

Would your local library have a copy? The libraries in my area switched from Overdrive to Libby a while back and it's a lot more user friendly.

Monica Go | 916 comments No they don't have it. I think I can't even request it. It's a not-so-good library.

Monica Go | 916 comments They don't have audiobook at all
