NayNay Hi ladies

A little about myself. I'm a stay home wife and mother, although my two sons are adults now and have lives of their own I still stay busy with everyday chores and I love to cook and bake. I read a book a day, historical fiction being my favourite genre. I'm crazy about the Tudor era and looking forward to playing. This is one of my favourite challenges.

5 star

Gilt by Katherine Longshore Gilt by Katherine Longshore

Captivating historical fiction novel about Henry VIII's fifth queen, Catherine Howard

This YA novel is narrated through the eyes of Catherine Howard's closest friend, Katherine ("Kitty") Tylney. I read a lot of Tudor Era novels and it is refreshing to read a book told from a character that we don't read or know a lot about. I enjoyed everything about this book, it was well written, vivid descriptions, the plot had a lot of scandal, Gilt fulfilled all my wildest historical fiction dreams and more.

Quote that stood out:

Words can kill as surely as sword or ax or dagger. They can prostrate the subject and render the speaker voiceless. Words may not fracture bone but they can wound you with devastating precision.

Will is a sports reporter, he's assigned the challenge of finding a gay jockey to write a cover piece. He finds one with a murky history. The jockey's lawyer Francis calls on him and the two strike up a relationship. This strained credulity, the dialogue was silly, the bulk of the story was about a mystery that wasn't particularly mysterious. There wasn't that much about the actual relationship. Boring.

Review: This book got off to a slow start with me. I hit the 20% mark and was yawning. It started off with an insta-lust plot line and I was frustrated by Rex's character. Daniel was a fairly complete and alive as a character but Rex just lacked a lot of details and personality at the beginning. Towards the middle as I started to learn more about Rex and Will enter the picture. Once alot of Rex's history came out I started to enjoy the building relationship between the two of them.

Review:

I wake up barefoot, standing on cold slate tiles.

Cassel Sharpe is an outsider in his family. Everyone is a curse worker except him. A sleepwalking episode sends him home from hid exclusive school and he begins to learn more about himself. Cassel has always been able to lie and con others but is surprised by his true gift which his brothers have made him forget. Three years ago Cassel killed his best friend, Lila but doesn't remember why. Things become much clearer to him during his first few days back with his family.

This was a very odd book for me. It took over half the book for me to connect with Cassel. He is not a very likeable character. His family is even worse. Their ties with mobsters and other criminals made it difficult for me to relate.

The biggest theme of the story is betrayal. Although the brothers constantly remind each other that family is everything they all stab each other in the back.

The first three quarters of the book was slow. Family history and world building meandered and I often had to reread parts when I put the book down and came back. The last quarter of the story revealed why so many people rate this at 5 stars. For me it was a little too late. I may read the next book just to see where the story goes but it is not high on my list at the moment.

Review: I have to admit it has been a while since I read this series so it was almost like going into the series blind. It really makes me want to go back and read the series again. That being said I still enjoyed to rather different take on the Arthurian legend. It is interesting to watch Barra, Neirin, and Avalon deal with their various relationships. They do spend alot of the book with hurt feelings and misunderstandings but in the end there is a happily-ever-after that I can cheer for. The dragons also make a unique dynamic between all of them.

Frankie is a riverboat cruiseship owner and a gambler. Johnny is a straitlaced government worker who rides on Frankie's boat, Le Beau Soleil. This is a well researched historical that really brings to life the flavor of life for a closeted and less closeted gay man in the 1800s south. The story takes us pre Civil War and through the War with bits of history well drawn. I did find the relationship build a little lacking and unfortunately there was quite a bit of implausibility to the ending, but I did appreciate the author's effort to describe the time period well.

I found this to be a good addition to the series. Just like the other books, it was rich in historical detail, the character's well developed and strong, and even though there was not as much action in this one, there was twist and turns that kept the reader quickly turning the pages.

Review:

Heather woke up wrapped in sheets and sweating her little old head off.

Heather becomes involved with an investigation when favorite customer and friend, Eva, is hit over the head. Eva is unconscious in the hospital and Heather decides to do some sleuthing.

Heather is engaged to a detective who repeatedly asks her not to get involved in his investigations. She simply can't help herself and does anyway.

The writing is very simplistic and the plot has many holes. The culprit was rather obvious after being introduced.

I've tried a couple of times to read this series and may just give up. It needs a little something to make it more intriguing. A few recipes would be nice too.
