Kelly | 804 comments In The Giver a twelve year old boy, Jonas, is picked to have the honor to be the new Receiver of Memory. Jonas refers to the older man training him as the Giver. The community they live in does not have color, personal choice or know it's history; due to this it's members do not have true feelings. Only the Giver and now Jonas have the perspective of the past. They are aware of the structured 'sameness' that the leaders have put in place. During his training Jonas begins to question things and why they are done. He is exposed to new experiences and ideas he would not have know about if he was not going to be the next Receiver of Memory. Jonas must decide what to do with this information.

Lois Lowry wrote a wonderful book. She shows Jonas starting to feel things and have emotions. We see him transform with his new knowledge. She does a good job of describing the memories that Jonas as acquired and how they affect him.
