I thought I might listen to one just now, and I got a message from both Firefox and Chrome that it wasn't a secure site - not configured correctly. So I'm giving up on the podcasts.

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments totally got sucked in on the drive home today (military drill this weekend - so i'm alternating this book with a romance)

I kind of find Kvothe to be a bit too arrogant for my liking - its like he can't see that - but you can see some of the masters at the university see it - I wonder if Hem (?) did early on and that is why he treated Kvothe like he did early on...

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9034 comments Mod
He is definitely arrogant. He's too used to being ahead of everyone in learning etc... especially in his childhood as is highlighted by him (not sure what exactly what he was doing but) suffocating himself in response to one of Hem's question.

You'd think he'd learnt his lesson being on the street for 3 years but I guess that's a bit of a different lesson. But I also think he's a bit naive with the power of money (Ambrose; I'm still waiting in trepidation!) and/or thoughtless & very microscopic in purpose that is he can't see anything else but or his purpose to learn about the Chandrian there and revenge. Nothing else seem to matter; everything else is coincidental almost.

message 54: by Dee (new) - rated it 4 stars

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments Obviously we are seeing this through his eyes - which probably influences the perception of arrogance - through the eyes of the beholder etc

Really, why's that?

I haven't really much of an impression of her... or is that why you don't like her? She's not impressionable like Kvothe?

I'm on ch.63 btw and planning to resume reading in the next hour or so

Susan | 3758 comments Mod
I got through Ch 65 last night. Waiting to see if he gets into the Archives, and what happens if/when he does.

I haven't decided what I think about Denna yet. I guess I'm buying what the tavern owner says, and expecting the worst from her.

About Kvothe's arrogance - he certainly does seem to have a high opinion of himself. But we don't know (yet) what things he's accomplished that give him the reputation he has. Maybe a lot of it is well-deserved. What gets me about him is his inability to think through the logical consequences of his actions. He just does stuff, and lets the chips fall where they may. Given what he saw happen to his parents, I'm inclined to forgive him his single-mindedness about the Chandrian.

Yes, I'm waiting about Ambrose, too. The sentence "Maybe that's what made him decide to kill me." was a pretty strong hint about what's to come.

Btw, not that it matters, but the Master's name is spelled "Hemme" in the book. Not surprised you can't tell that in the audio version. :)

message 58: by Dee (new) - rated it 4 stars

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments i just think she is taking advantage of him (and others) - there have been a few comments made about how she just goes on her travels/wandering - leaves bills unpaid etc - but bamboozles everyone into liking her

around chapter 70ish - there is a quote about every man falling in love with her but Kvothe (which sounds like K-wot in audio) - says that she "looked" lonely

Are we going for the home stretch, ladies? Sounds like we're sort of within 1-5 chapters of each other... I finished ch. 71 last night and have jumped into another book for a bit but I can keep going, if you're ready :)

I finished Ch 70 last night. I was going to set it aside for the week when I got to the end of Ch 71 tonight, but I'm also happy to continue if the two of you prefer that. Your call. I can happily pick up another book in between or keep going on this one.

I can't see how in the stretch that's left there's going to be time for him to tell us about the things that earned him his reputation and made him decided to retire from the world. (Though there were comments earlier about how opening a tavern would be a thing he'd love to do).

I picked up the audio book for the next one the other day. It has 36 discs! I've never seen one so huge.

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments I think his story will continue into book 2

I'm off work today but I only have 3.5cd's left so would be done by Friday (if I listen one way in my commute and Wednesday if I listen round trip)

I'm totally up for doing the next book as well - just need to get from the library

Susan | 3758 comments Mod

Yes! And when will they have the time to deal with the current monster-issue?! So far, this is all in the one day... there hasn't been a break really in the story, is there? Just a tangential chat here and there.

That's it, exactly! You've put your finger right on to it, Susan. I couldn't really articulate my thoughts before which is where my 'microscopic' comment came from. He just plows through!

Btw, I noticed also that you've read Life in Outer Space and I'm not sure if you remember this part in the book about
three basic approaches to dealing with the world:

1. Keep your head down and your face out of anyone's line of fire.
2. Charge headfirst into the fray and hope the enemy is too confused to aim straight.
3. Cry and hide in the toilets.'

Sounds like Kvothe may be a #2, eh?

Yes!

I'd forgotten the quote. But I was just recommending Life in Outer Space to my school book club. So maybe I'll have to reread it next fall when the group does.

Oh, wow! 20 cents is less than paperbacks go for at our library sale.

Btw, I don't have a print copy to read yet, like I thought I would. I have the audio version, but I don't make progress as fast as Dee does in that mode. How about if we plan to start it on June 15? A couple of the copies out at the library should be back by then, and I'm hold # 2 of 3.

I find that I don't do audios very well... I can only do audios for 'light' reads like YA fantasy, chick-lit, cozy mysteries etc, 'easy-reads' sort of books.

I think I'd lose track trying to listen to this book on audio!

The Kiss of Deception is a good book to AVOID in audio. I got so upset while we were in Guatemala at one point when I really needed to go back and check some things from earlier parts of the book. And it was so hard to do. If you've read the book, you'll know what reveal I'm talking about.

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments lol! I picked up the second book from the library (in print and audio) - to see if I could come up with a reading plan for it

from listening to this one - I can do about an hour a day during the week (30pgs is about an hour) - so we could aim for 150pgs a week - which would give us about 6/7 weeks of reading/listening

Susan | 3758 comments Mod
I just finished last night. Wow! I normally don't read sequels right away, but I'll be ready to go on this one as soon as I have the book.

One thing we haven't mentioned that I really like is Kvothe's relationship with the girl who lives underneath, whom he meets on the roof. It's a reminder what a basically good person he is.

Thanks for working on the plan for the second book, Dee. I think 150 pages a week sounds good. I should be able to pick up a hard copy of the book when I'm back home on 6/15. And I could start listening on drive home on Wed (6/14). Since Tien likes schedules that start on Mondays, do we want to say we'll begin on 6/12? I'd be able to catch up on the weekend if we did that.

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments Monday works for me - I won't have my normal commute cause i'm taking the day off, but it'll be easy to catch up...

so here is what I would recommend:
12/6-18/6 = prologue and Ch. 1- Ch. 18 (approx. pg 153)
19/6-25/6 - Ch. 19- Ch. 41 (pgs 154-306)
26/6-1/7 - Ch. 42-Ch. 66 (pgs 307-450)
2/7-8/7 - Ch. 67- Ch. 107 (pgs 451-701)
9/7-15/7 - Ch. 108- Ch. 130 (pgs 702-856)
16/7-22/7 - Ch. 131-Epilogue (pgs 857-994)

Other than my having to work hard to read the dates right (e.g., 12/6 is June 12, not Dec. 6), it looks fine to me. (Just laughing about the dates -- don't change anything for me.)

It turns out to be easy to listen to the podcasts Tien mentioned if I do it in Chrome on my home computer. Listening to the first one (chapters 1-6) reminds me of the whole issue about the scrael that are threatening the whole town in the present day, and what will happen with them. We just got caught up in the flashback of his telling his story, and I totally forgot about the other.

I'm going to be really annoyed if that isn't dealt with in the second book either.

OK. I know that this buddy read is over, and I am not expecting any interaction. Just wanted to record some thoughts.

I have made it about 1/3 of the way through the book, and Kvothe is now at the University. So far, his journey there has been filled with trauma and efforts to survive after the massacre. Prior to that he was simply a precocious lad with little sense of others...mostly searching out what he wanted when he wanted it in his interactions with his parents and Abenthy. Now he has survived his "town" experience and is setting out on a new adventure - university. And, two days into getting admitted he has managed to get himself nearly expelled...but still got what he wanted...advanced. He has matured only slightly. He has better control over his desires, but they still rule. Book is getting interesting. I just remembered...this is the tale of Kvothe's childhood...not his present reality.

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9034 comments Mod
Are you finding it hard to remember he's only 15 in this book, Bea?

We kind of lost track of what's happening in the present, don't we? I mean what about those scary spiders!?

Susan | 3758 comments Mod
Yes, and halfway through the second book, he's only aged a year and we still know nothing more about the current situation.
