I still can't commit to DNFing Thoughtless....there is a little part of me that thinks there has to be SOMETHING that saves this book, so I marked it to go back to, which I will do. Why do I hate DNFing books so much. There are so many that I want to read, but it make me feel like a failure when so many loved it.

I had to let it go. I think we dnf'd aroynd the same place. I just could not with the literally behind the back "cuddles".

If they had been more fleshed out so I could see what they saw in each other. If I was shown not told. If I saw a friendship develop, not "cuddles", that then turned into more. If I saw them really fight it. If I saw her miss Denny for himself and all his qualities and what they were together while discovering herself on her own and then Kellan's qualities. If Kellan was interesting and didn't laugh so much and I was shown he gave a damn about his friends, then it might be a book id really enjoy.

Bev - while I liked it years ago, it didn't stick with me. I don't remember the story, the characters. It was one of the first of its kind for me. CRs rarely stick with me. Just move on!! To Tairen Soul #2! Ha! Or Trickery! This one is funny!

I'm about a third in now and not really loving it but it's OK. I'm just not really finding the characters believable enough, although I know that's not really the point of a book like this. I've gotten sidetracked by a reread of Tastes Like Candy, but I do want to finish Night Owl. it might get better??

Um, maybe not to the second part. I'm really lame and weak when it comes to heart-breaking books, although I don't mind the odd broken hero. But we can still be twinsies for some bookie things. So, a big mwah.

re: Night Owl, Thoughtless and soooo many other books that came out 4-5 years ago-- I think we were desperate for 1) new and different, older than young adult with actual sex storylines and 2) shocking and dark storylines. And when there was this huge influx of Indy authors writing these types of books, we all just went crazy, on a feeding frenzy. And now that all of our minds have been supersaturated with all of these same types of storylines over and over, we've been desensitized. Many of the books that we would have loved (or did love) all those years ago are now just meh. (Although I still do and always will love some of them.)

You are totally right, Renee...there is just so much now of what was missing then, and it takes a lot to be new and different anymore.

Mmmm. I dont know. There were definite crack books for sure. Like KA, for me. But some of those indies even then were not good. And some still are. I liked Night Owl alot. The sequel? No. Fifty? Meh. Still havent finished it. Yet, I liked Bared to You.

I cracked out on KA years ago too. Now I don't like any of her new stuff. Is it me or did she change? Both, I think. Totally over billionaires, and BDSM too. Even MC romances have to be well written... like Tastes Like Candy!!! Swoon. I loved Candyman!!!

Nay, I totally agree with you. For example, if I read Tristan & Danika when it first came out I would have enjoyed it more.

It takes so much now to be new and different for me. Almost every one of you has waaaaay wider range of genre/sub-genres you like. I get so annoyed with myself when I cant get into popular book you all love. :(

I dont do "go back laters". If I dont like something I dnf and its very rare I'd try it again. Thats great if that works for some of you.

You know what else I noticed about myself? Almost all my faves are series. I def prefer to have more time with my MCs then just one book.

But that's what I'm saying, bev. MANY of those books were NOT good! Some of us were just NEEDING what they were giving us and we overlooked the crap!

NOW I require a well-written, well-edited book much more than I did back then.

I hate to single out a book, but the other day, I read Where Good Girls Go to Die, and let me tell you, the very BEST thing about that book is the title, and the 2nd best thing is the blurb. HOWEVER, the books does NOT match the blurb and the title is misleading. But whoever came up with them is genius because it's been in the Amazon top 100, not just for romance, but for ALL ebooks since it was released.

It's only ok written, with many holes in the plot, has ZERO to do with anyone dying, and the way the heroine is described in the blurb is exemplified for maybe the first 10 pages, with no explanation, and then she's the TOTAL opposite for the rest of the book. Every time, and I mean EVERY time they have sex, he slams her against a wall first thing, but the sex scenes are not well 'fleshed-out' (for lack of a better term--lol), so that you're thinking, 'how did she get on her stomach all of a sudden?' lol.

I just gave it 3 stars and left it at that because I didn't want to slam the author, but it needs major editing for content--words repeated within the same paragraph or even sentence all over the place, and like I said, a weak plot with inconsistent characters.

BUT I would have LOVED it five years ago, I know I would have, because it's steamy, angsty, and kind of (not really though) forbidden because the hero is her brother's best friend.

If I had read Thoughtless then, I still would not have liked it. Just like I never got into Fifty or Twilight despite the craze.
But I do agree that some books give us joy or pleasure without being a 5 or 4 star book. It is just personal taste. I will put books on my year in favorite list that are not 5 stars and leave off books that maybe are, just because I could see the skill and craft but ........
Once Upon a Rose if I rated it would probably be a 3/3.5 but it was one of my favorites last year shoulder to shoulder with To Tell the Truth Shame the Devil which id rate higher.

I am SO with you guys. BEEN over the millionaire/billionaire, MC, BDSM, fighter, SEAL,college kids, etc. tropes. Nowadays it takes a VERY special book to lure me back to CR F/M romance.

The oldies I read way back when they were fresh and new will always remain favorites for me. Although I doubt I will ever reread them, I do have an emotional attachment to them.

Would I enjoy them as much now? No way!

Grey--I had never heard of NABC to RiRi, so I looked it up and found it. So is that *normally* a place to find good recommendations?? I don't see Roomie Wars on the thread, but I did read your review and quite a few other lukewarm ones on the book page. Of course, there were also plenty of 4 and 5-stars that are making the rating seem higher than it probably should be.

I think I may hit my library eBook collection at least once a month, that way I can get an "expensive" book for free & hopefully some quality writing. That's the missing piece for me.

I keep chasing the next best thing, and Amazon recs are full of cheap indie books. And the reviews are all inflated! Anita Blake, BDB, and Stephanie Plum novels get low stars... rightfully so... and junk gets 5s! Ugh! Can't trust those Amazon reviews at all.

Thank you for this reassuring discussion, ladies. I'm a bit late to the party cos I had a time-consuming full-on job till a couple of years ago and didn't have much reading time. Now I work part-time and have lots more time for books. :) Since I joined Maryse's blog I've tried quite a few of the books everyone raved about, and a number of them disappointed me. So reassuring to see that IT'S NOT JUST ME! Yay!

For me, the big things are: Must be WELL-WRITTEN with GOOD CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. I have to believe in the characters to actually care about them. Would I go near Candyman with a 20 foot pole in real life? Nooooooo. But in his book I believe in him and I LOVE HIM. Thank you Lauren Gilley and other writers with class, like Christina Lauren, Nia Forrester, Lisa Kleypas etc etc. You rock my world.

KA - Although I don't like her fantasy books or her new saucy series, many of her other books have given me a lot of enjoyment and I still look forward to when new books of hers come out. I'm currently lusting after the new Magdalene series book. (not out yet)
