Cory wanted to be legit, but needed money and got involved with things he had no desire to be involved with. He told his friend not to get involved and the thing turned out deadly. Now, Cory has a dead friend and hot diamonds. He was in a no win situation if Nader knew that Cory and his friend were in contact. Even if Cory had nothing to do with the diamonds he still would have been suspect. This is being between a rock and a hard spot. He was smart to get the diamonds out of the country, but he was dumb to try to sell them.
I don't know what he could have done differently. He didn't steal the diamonds, his friend did. I guess he could have squealed on his friend, but he wasn't that kind of person. At least he was smart enough to move the diamonds.
His original sin, agreeing to move a package for Nader, limited his options to compliance or death thereafter. He could have returned the diamonds somehow but suspicion probably would have come back to him. You know the axiom...lie down with dogs...
I think that selling to necklace to Fox was Cory's way to get the money and then disappear. Without funds Cory wouldn't have gotten far.

I think that's the only option he could come up with. Should have worked but...Nader's reach.

His smartest move was to mail off the necklace to his sister. Otherwise he'd be long dead when Nader got a hold of him. He was only kept alive because he knew where the diamond was.
