Out Of Shadows
I am currently reading Out Of Shadows by Jason Wallace ( page 60). The main character, Robert is a transferred student that is working to adapt to his surrounding. He has become extremely comfortable with some of the white friends he has. There are still a few kids at his school that pick on him. At the school he attends, the kids are white. Most of the kids are jealous of Robert because of his father being a president. The other kids like to make jokes about his skin and why he is treated differently, but by now he’s used to it. Robert knows that he has just as much authority as them, he no longer lets their insults get to him. Robert is maturing and becoming closer to the white surroundings.
The characterization of Robert differs throughout the story. Depending on his friends mood, or his surroundings, his actions have changed sometimes due to what’s being said around him, or what he see’s. Robert is starting to change his look on Nelson. Around Nelson, Robert was able to express exactly how he felt about a certain situation. Nelson and Robert shared a great bond until someone decides to come in between the. At school, Robert is now known as a “Pom”. Robert is easy with making friends with more white people than black people , his father did not like this.Robert was now demanded to make friends with more people of his kind. His “kind” are more likely to share the same point of view on things. They should be able to look at everything from the same perspective.
In the story, conflict between Ivan and Robert has decreased. In the beginning of the story, Ivan picked on him and Nelson. Ivan is now seeming to take over Nelson’s role in Robert’s life. Robert is extremely gullible, Ivan told him that. This statement projects honesty, creating a relationship and tone that will allow them to be able to joke around now as friends. He isn’t used to Ivan being nice to him at all. He’s curious on why Ivan’s attitude toward him has changed all of a sudden. Ivan and Robert are even able to talk about personal things to each other now. Later in the book, I predict that Robert will completely turn on Nelson, Ivan will convince him to.
In the story, the actor does a great job projecting Roberts emotions. He speaks in first person from Robert’s perspective. This was smart because it allows us to put ourselves in Robert’s shoes, and to have empathy. The author’s writing style makes it easy to understand where Robert is coming from. The author helps us to connect to Robert, the way Nelson does. Racism is common everywhere, he makes the book relatable by including it in it.
In conclusion, Out of shadows is beginning to shift and my thoughts on the book are changing. At first, I assumed Nelson and Ivan would forever be up against Ivan. I think otherwise now because of the bond that they’re beginning to create. At first, the bond started by force of Ivan pushing himself onto Robert. It’s not longer like that. Robert and Ivan are beginning to enjoy each other’s company...this is not good.
