[ Romeo and Juliet- Best Frenemies
By: Johanna Olson and Ingrid Heldman (Catherine and 9124crystal)
(Anna is hunched over a desk centerstage)
Narrator: Boring was one way to describe Anna's life. She wished something.. anything.. interesting would happen.
(Lights flash black for a few moments. Anna and the desk are gone. Jonah is surrounded by technology and talking inaudibly on the phone.)
Narrator: Exciting. That was one way to describe Jonah's life. He wished that it would calm down for five seconds so he could relax!
(Scene changes to a school hallway)
Narrator: One day Anna and Jonah were were at school.
(Teacher walks up and posts a piece of paper on the wall)
(Anna walks over and Jonah runs over to look)
Anna: Play tryouts. Sounds like fun.
Jonah: Yes! Play tryouts!
(They look at each other and scowl)
Jonah: You could try to be a little more excited.
Anna: You could slow down for two seconds.
(Jonah chewing rhythmically a piece of bubble gum, listening to music. Anna studies him. Then she scowls and turns away. She sarcastically talks to him.)
Anna: Have fun at your tryout thing.
Jonah: Same to you.
(Anna turns away)
(Jonah laughs and smirks)
arrator: The two parted ways and avoided each other, hoping they never had to see each other again. Until, the day of auditions came.
(Jonah and Anna walk onstage along with a director and a few other people wanting to audition)
(The two avoided eye contact as the director says his announcement)
Director: We will be doing this in partners.
Director: You (points at Anna) and you (points at Jonah)
(They shoot each other dirty looks and he continues)
Director: You (points at a girl) and you (points at a boy). You (points at a boy) and you (points at a girl). And since we have more girls than boys, you two remaining girls get to read together. As you probably know, the play is Romeo and Juliet.
(Everyone groans/gags/pretends to vomit)
Director: No trading! No switching!
Director: Now that the pairs have been established, we shall be doing a cold reading of Act 2 Scene 3 Lines 30-44, when Romeo and Juliet sneak out to the garden to meet in secret. You two girls will need to decide who will read Romeo and who Juliet.
(The girls converse loudly for a moment, both wanting to be Juliet, but eventually one girl wins the argument. The director passes out scripts and everyone turns to the correct page.)
( Jonah and Anna watched the girls, hoping they wouldn't have to kiss in that scene. It was extremely boring though... and in a few minutes, Jonah was listening to music, Anna was sleeping silently)
Director: Anna! Are you slacking today? Humph. Maybe you don't want to be here..
(Anna wakes up)
Anna: Sorry..Mr. Greg. Won't happen again.
Director: I hope so. Jonah! Are you listening to music?
(yanks off the headphones and confiscates them)
Jonah: But this band released a new album and I haven't had time to listen yet!
Director: You need to start having more time if you want to be in this play. Time to rehearse, practice, and memorize.
Director: And you girls, did I tell you to stop? Continue!
(The Director walked away)
Anna: Well he's a grinch.
(They glanced at each other, surprised. They had actually agreed with each other! Jonah was the first to break away, taking out a tennis ball. He began to throw it, up and down)
Anna: Why do you always have to be doing something?
Jonah: It's my way of life
(He bounces the ball higher. Anna groans and sighs, watching the girls act.)
Director: Thank you girls, you may go back to your seats. Jonah and Anna! Here are your scripts.
(Hands scripts to them. They read them over.)
Jonah: Ew I have to say mushy stuff to her!
Anna: Ug whatever
(They line up in the mock garden set with their scripts)
Anna: Oh Romeo! Art thou Romeo! I hath escaped from my father to come see you, but I hath fear for our lives if we art to be discovered. I carest not! I am with you!
Anna: My one true love!
Jonah: Oh Juliet! Tis I, Romeo! telleth me dearest, thine eyes art quite quaint, thy touch divine. But our parents, those gents wilt has't discovered us and all wilt beest hath lost.
(Jonah coughs trying to keep a straight face.)
Anna: All wilt beest hath lost without stheeh...
(Anna stops and squints)
Director: It's thee, Anna!
Anna: Sorry... All wilt beest hath lost without thee....
Director: Alright that's enough next up is Isabella and David.
(They repeat the scene like Jonah and Anna, but a bit worse)
Director: Alright, auditions for Romeo and Juliet are closed. I will be casting the smaller parts now, so clear out!
(Everyone slowly makes their way out, but Jonah jogs out. Anna rolls her eyes)
Narrator: The next day, the director announces the parts. Jonah and Anna get cast as Romeo and Juliet!
Jonah and Anna both pump their fists in delight, before shooting a surprised look at each other that they had the same reaction.)
Director: We're going to be doing a cold reading of the script now.
(They talk very quietly and the narrator voices in above them)
Narrator: They did the cold reading of the script, both of them acing it.
(The two characters gag slightly as they read inaudibly, presumably reading a mushy part)
Narrator: Soon enough they finished.
Director: Anna, good job with the accent there! Just maybe speak a little louder.
(Director turns towards Jonah)
Director: And Jonah! I like your voice projection but you really need to pronounce the names of people and places better. Work on figuring those out.
(Director makes a general announcement)
Director: Everyone did pretty well and I'm confident that the play will go over well. Continue working on your lines at home.
(Anna turns toward Jonah and speaks softly)
Anna: You did well..
(Jonah flushed unintentionally and mumbles)
Jonah: You too...
(They awkwardly stare in silence for a moment before Jonah does something.)
Jonah: So uh
Jonah: I was wondering if we could uh meet up sometime to work on memorizing lines..
Narrator: They practiced their lines together after school in the drama area, not wanting to go to either's house particularly. They had a pretty good time and were feeling warmer to each other by the time they left school.
(Anna and Jonah laugh before starting an inaudible scene in the background where they both end up on the ground, 'dead.')
Narrator: The next day, Jonah decided it was time to be brave and take a leap of faith. Little did he know, Anna had had the same feeling and was going to ask too.
The scene shifts to the end of a rehearsal)
Anna: Oh Romeo I cannot but live without thy presence! Thou art my everything!
(She stabs herself with a cleverly painted foam sword right between her arm and body, with her body angled away from the stage so no one can tell it wasn't a real stab. The curtains close)
Director: Bravo! Bravo! That was very good! I can't wait for the actual performance!
(Later) Jonah: Umm...I was meaning to ask you something. Anna: Me too...(Long pause) Both: Uh...
Jonah finally says: Anna, do you want to come to my house to practice? ( He sighs) Anna: That's what I was going to ask you. If you wanted to come to my house...
Narrator: They spent the next few days at each others houses learning the script and blocking the moves. In time, they began to realize...they were in love...
(The stage goes dark momentarily and when it lights up again, some people are standing around the edge of the stage and clapping as Anna and Jonah bow with a few other people.)
(The stage lights dim and the 'audience' starts to file out. Anna and Jonah turn to each other)
Anna: You did well...
(She smiles as she repeats what she'd said to him before)
(He blushes as she smiles at him. Slowly they move their faces towards each other, staring deeply into each others' eyes.Anna can feel her heart beating like crazy. Jonah trembles a bit. But, at last they can feel each other's breath on their faces. They kiss slowly and shyly, then let go. They smile shyly at each other and then run off holding hands.)
