A surprise I had on reading this was the idea of the spirituality of the totem. That the galaxy spirit of cooperation was in part the influence of the totem. Maybe I read to much sci-fi-fi and they tend to not speak about spirituality.

Good insight. Star Trek dips into spirituality regularly, usually examining it through non-humans though.
