Describe Capitú as she is introduced.

Jose Diaz describes her as a child who is scatterbrained but who might have set her sights on Bentinho.

To Bentinho she is a beautiful girl whom he loves, to his mother she is the daughter of the neighbour a good and moral girl.

Capitú is the neighbor girl. They have been friends for a long time. It is when Bentinho over hears a conversation Jose Diaz is having with his mother that he becomes are of Capitú as a sexual being and himself as well. He also hears her describes as having a sly eyes. It is early on that words of doubt about Capitú enters his thoughts.

She may have been calculating if you can trust our unreliable narrator.

Diane | 1889 comments It is hard to say because her description comes in bits and pieces and varies according to who is doing the description. Diaz says she is scatterbrained. Betinho says she is beautiful with long dark hair and eyes like the tide. There are several references to her having "sly eyes". She does seem somewhat calculating, but not necessarily in a bad way.
