Emma Flanagan (emma89) This is the discussion thread for our Feb - Mar quarterly read Academy Street by Mary Costello

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments In case anyone is interested they have hardback copies of this books on sale in Chapters on Parnell Street in Dublin for 4.99. I don't work there I promise.

Susan | 4707 comments Think of how expensive it would be to get from CA. to Dublin to get a copy. Just kidding.

Lorraine | 152 comments I just got the e-book from the library so fingers crossed I can read this in the first week. I did find some book club questions so I'll put them in the spoiled thread when it's up. I don't really know a lot about the book but I'm assuming it has similar themes to Brooklyn by Colm Toibin.

Wish I was there now.

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments It's a bit rainy and dull to be honest. :)

did not come in with high expectations, thought it was excellent
My review, 5 of 5 stars (some spoilers)

Lorraine | 152 comments I'm hoping to read Academy Street tomorrow. I have a long bus ride home so this could be a short and sweet book. I'll read your review after, Andy.

Colleen | 1205 comments I read Academy Street last year and I liked it but didn't love it . In the spoiler thread I will mention why I didn't love it.
It is a bit like Brooklyn but I loved Brooklyn I cared about the people in it and could relate to them on a certain level.

It is actually a bit like Brooklyn. Despite reading it very quickly I'm not sure I really enjoyed it that much. I liked the flow of the language but something about the characters just didn't really appeal to me.

Jackie | 19 comments Thanks Goodreads Ireland for another great read!! I must admit I did find it a bit slow at the start, but ended up reading until 12.20 a.m last night because I couldn't put it down, it is very much a short story, but I did so relate to the story! giving nothing away- I was a single mom but thankfully I have still got my wonderful son who is 38 and still my pride and joy - the ending brought a little tear to my eye.

Maria Hill AKA MH Books (mariahilldublin) | 601 comments Just starting this. Shouldn't be too long. It's quite short.
