The letter of introduction states that these are letters from an uncle who was commissioned to navigate and map Alaska. He feels the letters would be a good addition to the museum and would be willing to send artifacts also. The writer has no family left and feels the letters and artifacts should not be lost. It is an excursion to match Lewis and Clark.

Letters written in March 1885 – They are waiting on some otter hunters. People are impatient, they want to leave. They have a Eyak as a guide. The guide wants to wait for the hunter the leader does not. The get in the ship and are almost capsized. They relent and go back to shore. The Eyak says a storm is coming.

Sophia Forrester is the wife of Col. Allen Forrester who is the leader of the expedition to Alaska. She will be traveling with them to Sitka. The expedition will consist of only three men as that is all that were funded. The three men consist of Lieut. Col. Forrester, Tillman who was appointed to go along and Pruitt who will also be the photograph. S0phie tries to engage Pruitt and although finds out something of her husband she didn’t know, didn’t really engage well with Pruitt. She found out her husband has a angry streak although she hasn’t seen it.

OK - I finally caught up. Sophie is pregnant and so can't go to Sitka. She is not suppose to travel so will not be allowed to go back to her mother in Vermont. She is not altogether unhappy about this. They decided to wait to tell people she is expecting but that causes the other women in Vancouver to speculate as to why she isn't going.

Meanwhile, the group in Alaska is made up of the three men (Forrester, Pruitt & Samuelson) and an Indian girl, a dog and a couple of old indian men. They are following the Wolverine River. The dog disappears during the day and the girl is unpredictable.

Sophie ended up (with encouragement from a friend) to “borrow” the obstetrics book from the doctor. When her friend saw the book, she knew Sophie’s secret.
Allen was having a hard day and he would read over and over Sophie’s letter she wrote the night before he left. It told him when she first fell in love with him and encouraged him to come back to her.

They found Boyd almost starved to death. He found a indian woman and now had a wife he would not leave. She was the fog and with the fog, he cannot hunt. She left two days before the men found him. As the men ate on the last of their meat. They went out the next day to sunshine and found caribou to hunt. They feasted on the meat.
Sophie’s pregnancy became known due to the girl she has working for her telling Mrs. Conner. Sophie prefers to spend time alone and is irritate with other people, even her friend Evelyn. She decided that since everyone else knows, she should tell her mother about her pregnancy.

Also do not blame Sophie for being irritated with her helper.

They had to make it through a canyon and had no idea how far it was to the other side. The dog Boyo, got stuck on the other side of a crevice. Although Tillman and the woman wasn’t to help the dog, the Colonel demanded that they leave it. Unhappily, they went on. They spent the night in the canyon. The woman was gone the next morning. She went after the dog. The made it out of the canyon in about ¼ miles. They were upset that the spent the night in the canyon not knowing they were so close to the end. Shortly after, they looked back to find the canyon had been filled with ice, then they thought about the woman and the dog.

Wonder why things were not reported in the book as is in the journal and letters?

I bet the Indian woman will return with Boyo.

Sophie is bed ridden due to bleeding. The doctor seems like he really doesn’t know what to do with a pregnant woman. She was also given opium and is have dreams about her father and a fire. She found out that Charlotte isn’t the one who told Mrs. Conner about being pregnant, it was Evelyn. She is missing Allan even more.
The traveling of the men is getting touch as food is at a minimum. They are not finding rabbits to hunt and it looks like the found a child’s leg bone with human teeth marks on it. They met up with some Indians and traded food for tea and gunpowder. The food seems rancid.

Evelyn finally visit Sophie and admitted that she told Mrs. Conner about her pregnancy. She was unrepentant and seems to be a very shallow person. Sophie met the man who takes care of the trees. They talked birds and nesting.
Allen and his team are near starvation. They saw women who turn into geese and couldn’t believe their eyes. A couple of days later, they see the Indian woman and the dog. The men heard about how she and the dog survived and almost more about her life.

Hillary – you were right about the Indian woman and the dog coming back but what I found interesting, is that now the woman has a name and the dog is just called the dog.

Sophie is taking refuge in photography. She and Evelyn went to Portland to get supplies. After offending a few pharmacists with her requests, she was directed to a Mr. Remington. He was vey helpful and was able to help her and give her advice as to what would be better for her as a notice with photography. She had her dark room set up at home and tried to make several prints. She offended some of her neighbors when they showed up unannounced and she was in her darkroom.
Allen and the men, along with the Midnooksies finally set out. The men in boats on the river and the women walking with all the supplies. The 2nd day, Till decided he didn’t like the river and chose to walk with the women. It was a hard day and some of Allen’s men thought he may have made the correct choice.

When Allan said they wanted to cross the river, the were discouraged and told of a monster that lives in the lake. The rest of the party wanted to go around the late but Allen wasn’t going for it. Sophie and Charlotte were out looking for bird’s nests when they came upon a black bear. Sophie saw it first and pointed it out to Charlotte. Charlotte reached for her sling-shot but Sophie had her wait and keep quiet. The bear finally saw them, and then walked away. They women left (leaving behind Sophie’s field glasses). They told the grounds keeper, he retrieved the field glasses. Mrs. Conner told the General of Sophie’s conversion of her pantry and now he wanted to meet with her.
Allen and the others set out in the canoes to cross the late. They came across the lake monster. They lost one of the boats and Tillman was bit but Pruitt and the woman got time into their boat. There wasn’t room for Allan, he had to swim. They Indian ventured out to help them. They all survived but were shaken.

Sophie was given the opportunity to develop the plates from Allan's trip. Most of the plate were broken but about 9 survived. One was of Allen and she almost didn't recognize him. She wished he had looked at the camera.
Allan and the men left again when Tillman was able to leave. They went by boat but kept to the edges of the lake. They met up with the Old Man again and he stole some of their supplies.

They enjoyed what they saw and Sophie gave one picture away. One woman asked if she would photograph her family. Sophie saw a raven which unsettled her as the last time she saw one was when she lost her baby.

Tillman was still writing when they left the Indians and set out on the river. The Coronel was still pretty sick as was Pruitt so Tillman and Naggi did all the work. When the Coronel got better, he resumed his journaling. Tillman confessed that he was in love with Naggi. The Coronel doesn’t see it going anywhere. Tillman would not leave civilization to live in the wild and he couldn’t see Naggi following him to his next post. They made it to the Yukon but the outpost was out of supplies. They were served a real meal by Mrs. Lowe. Her husband is a missionary and she has 7 children under 10. She is nursing Pruitt back to health.
Walt and Josh continue to correspond.
