Linda Badcock During the 1990s or early 2000s I read a cosy British detective novel in which "water otter" was a significant phrase (maybe a clue?) I can't remember any plot details but I do remember the water otter solution. The book may have been old when I read it; I think it was set in an earlier time (50s?). There were two policemen and I think perhaps a village fete. Does anyone recognize this book?

Ayshe | 4165 comments I don't, but search in google books for "water otter" brings up Passing Strange by Catherine Aird. Does it look familiar?

Linda Badcock Thanks, you may be right. Coincidentally, I just finished a book by Catherine Aird. Perhaps it was her pair of detectives that made me think of the "water otter" book. I'll check it out.

Linda left the group but I agree with Ayshe this is Passing Strange. The phrase "water otter" does occur in the solving of the mystery. It also features a village fete/fair.
