Jane Blythe Once again another super-duper fantastic flash fiction, Mistress Ann!!

Here's mine . . .

Charity had been wrong.

They hadn't wanted to kill her.

They had wanted to use her.

Her almost in-laws were so much more vicious, so much more conniving, than she had ever realised.

Yes, they had turned her into a caged animal. One that was half crazy and ready to pounce at a moments notice. Only she would never turn on her captors.

They had her. They had broken her down and then rebuilt her into a killing machine.

She still hated them. With a passion. But they held the key to the one thing she wanted. They held the key to the man she loved. The man she had thought was dead.

But he wasn't dead.

And she would do whatever she had to to get him back.

So she killed whomever they told her too.

Charity cocked the gun, pointed it at the man, and uttered in a bleak monotone, "if you move an inch to the left I'll blow your head off."

Mary Ellen Woods (maryellen_woods) | 163 comments No blog so here it is...

Eli and some of the other troopers were coming straight up the road. Robert ducked back in the tent and roused the stewards and nurses. There would be wounded to care for in moments. Rachel searched the riders for Zeke but could not find him. The riders passed out of view a moment as they went down a dip in the road. Rachel held her breath. When they emerged again at the top of a hill less than a hundred yards away, Eli was still in the lead and what he had in front of him on the horse was now discernible. It was a body.
When Eli reigned in his horse, the orderlies were there to take his brother's limp form from his grasp. Eli was streaked in blood from his chest to his knees. Zeke’s jacket and trousers were blood soaked from the waist down on his right side.
“Please, tell me he is alive.” Eli’s voice quaked as he dismounted.
Rachel put her fingers to Zeke’s neck and nodded, unable to speak. She followed the orderlies carrying her husband into the tent. Robert prepared the surgery as quickly as possible. Once Zeke was on the table, divested of much of his clothing, Robert cut away Zeke’s linen shirt to reveal a gaping wound in his abdomen. Rachel put her hand over her mouth and tears welled in her eyes. “Oh God!”
Eli’s face was grim and bloody. He was fighting tears. “Is he going to die?”
“An inch to the left…and he would be dead already,” Robert said as he cleaned the wound. Rachel was frozen in place looking down at Zeke’s face. “Angel, he needs you.” Robert said gently as he put his hand on her arm.
She closed her eyes and swallowed hard. “Yes,” she murmured when she opened them. She put on an apron and took up his wrist. “His pulse is weak. He has lost a lot of blood.” She was thinking out loud. “We have to be careful on the ether.” She splashed the liquid on linen. Zeke stirred. Robert paused. “Cheri,” Zeke whispered weakly. He smiled at her with unfocused deep blue pools. Zeke held out his hand toward Eli. “You got me to her.” Eli took his brother’s hand and squeezed it despite his own hand shaking.
Rachel leaned down to him caressing his cheek. He brought his left hand up and to her chin and ran his thumb over her cheek. “How bad?” She looked at her father. His face made the answer plain. Zeke had seen enough war to know. There was no use in lying.
“Bad,” she told him.
“I believe in you,” he affirmed.
“I can not do it alone. You have to help me.“ Her voice quaverd. “Fight to stay with me. Fight, you hear me.” She touched her lips to his. “I love you.”
“I love you,” he replied in a whisper. She held the linen over his nose and within moments he slipped from consciousness.

message 7: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Siegrist (amandasiegrist) She slowly opened her eyes, shivering. Her skin was like one giant icicle. Prickling goose bumps flared everywhere. Every inch of her skin.

Oh my God, she was naked. Utterly and truly naked.

Yanking her wrists, she fought the restraints holding her down. Attempting the same with her feet, she realized she was tied up from head to toe; even a thick strap was tight against her stomach. The cold metal from the buckle burned her skin, reminding her of the sensation when you stepped from the freezing cold into warmth. A horrible burning sensation.

She couldn't make out much. The room appeared tiny. Although, only a sliver of light was shining around her from a dim light bulb hanging directly above. She was happy for that small amount of light. Not that she was afraid of the dark, but to be alone, naked, in the complete dark would probably send her over the edge.

Why wasn't she freaking out yet? She should be screaming her head off.

Except the silence unnerved her. Absolute silence. No small buzzing sound of electronics whirling in the background. No slow whizzing sound as warm air left a vent. No sound of shoes thumping her way. Just nothing.

Besides her own heavy breathing, of course. She could hear that just fine. Staying calm was imperative. She wouldn't be able to get out of this alive if she didn't stay calm. And she needed to survive. Stephen, her best friend and confidant, would find her. She trusted him with her life. Once he knew she was missing, he'd find her. He'd save her. He had to. She wasn't ready to die.

Who was that man? Why had he been stalking her the last three weeks? Why couldn't anything in her life ever go right?

She tried yanking on her wrists and feet again, whimpering in pain. The tiny sound echoed around the room as if she hollered from the top of her lungs.

The excruciating pain from her ankle made her believe she had broken it, not merely sprained it when her heel caught in the drain hole. She would've been able to fight back properly if that hadn't happened. That was her life. Nothing ever went right. Never.

Deep breaths in and out. She forced herself to do that as slowly as possible, to regain her composure. She could feel the terror bubbling up inside. Falling apart wouldn't help her.

The pain in her ankle started to dull to a throbbing ache instead of an agonizing roar. That was better.

Now if she could think of a way to get out of these restraints. And once she did, how in the he** was she gonna walk out of wherever she was being held? An inch to the left or an inch to the right and the pain screamed from every part of her ankle, shooting straight up her entire body. There was no way she'd be able to walk out of here.

Crawling it was then. She'd crawl, drag herself, hop on one foot, anything to escape.

Her breathing slowed. Quiet and calm.

Just as suddenly, her body started to convulse with tremors of fear. What was that sound? She was breathing easy again, not heavy. Who was breathing heavy?

Shadows started to dance in front of her as a large figure ventured from the dark into the light.

Her body instantly relaxed. "Stephen…you found me. I knew you would."

Stephen's familiar face made her heart soar from dread to happiness. His light brown hair that was shaggy as ever, never perfectly combed. She didn't know how many times she tried to talk him into getting a haircut. His eyes that always held so much warmth and love, always expressing how much he cared about her. Like the brother she always wanted. And his smile, so bright and beautiful, she tried to make him laugh all the time just to see his smile.

"Help me."

His face lit up, but not the way she expected. A delirious gleam entered his eyes as he brushed a few unruly strands of hair back. His lips curled, crooked with mischief, as he swooped in close, inches from her mouth.

"I'm not Stephen." His hot breath felt like cold daggers to her heart. "And I'm very upset with you."

Sooo I'm getting legit serious for a second LOL

@Miss Mary: Give our group rules a quick read.

This is NOT an 18+ group so we actually NEED to censor ALL profanity. My author site is full of f-bombs but everything here is f*ck, a*s, c*ck, p*ssy, etc. Any posts with uncensored profanity will be deleted ASAP. After a few repeat offenses, we gotta ban the offender.

*sobs uncontrollably* So, yeah...

No swearing, kids! XP

message 24: by Mary Ellen (new)

Mary Ellen Woods (maryellen_woods) | 163 comments I know there is no profanity here. Is he** profanity? I honestly don't consider it such since it is a place of reference in religious texts. But notice I used the underworld so yeah...I get it.

Alright ladies! this is my flash for the week its a bit longer than normal but it provides some backstory

“I hate funerals,” Mac grumbled as he yanked on the collar of his dress uniform.
Marcy looked at him disapprovingly as they walked through the cemetery on their way to Andy’s grave side service. He knew she was cutting him some slack by not elbowing him and telling him to behave. They were participating in the Military funeral service for his good friend. It hit them all hard when that IED took out his humvee in Iraq.
He looked over at his cousin. No one was hit harder by Andy’s death than Twitch. He had a rough life and those few that Twitch decided were family were the lucky ones. He made it his number one goal to protect them. To him, Andy’s death was his failure. The somber look on his face said it all. Mac could see the guilt and pain in his features. He reached over and squeezed his shoulder in an attempt to comfort him.
It was a weak gesture. He knew that more than anyone. How many times at his parents’ funeral did men come and clap him on the shoulder in an attempt to show condolences? Did any of it really make him feel any better? No. It didn't. It was a gesture meant only to make them feel better. To console the young boy who became an orphan in a second. None of it was real. The simple gesture just made it worse for him now.
He felt useless for the first time in a long time. He couldn't help Twitch. He couldn't ease the pain of the man who went out of his way to protect them all. He looked down at his biceps remembering the tattoo Twitch had gotten the night before. “I am my brother’s keeper” is what it said and Mac had wondered briefly who would be his keeper. Who would keep his brother safe if he was always busy watching everyone else's backs? He vowed then to no one else but himself and God that he would do whatever it took to keep Twitch safe.
They walked across the grass. Headstones were lined in neat rows some had flowers on them some didn’t. It was a beautiful spring day and the sun was shining bright. It almost seemed wrong for the birds to be chirping and happy on such a sad day. The large canopy held the bright sun off the few mourners that were already sitting in front of the casket that was draped in the red, white and blue American Flag.
Twitch stumbled but caught himself. Mac knew what was going on. It didn't seem real until he saw the casket sitting there with a picture of his friend in his fatigues. His blue eyes were laughing as he sat stone faced.
He looked to the front row and saw Casey sitting alone. Her long blonde hair was pulled up in a bun on the top of her head and she was wearing dark sunglasses over her red puffy eyes. His heart cracked open when he saw her. She was sniffling to herself and Mac could just imagine the tiny baby in her stomach growing. She wasn't showing yet but he remembered how excited Andy had been when he got her letter and the copy of the ultrasound picture. Now that tiny little life would never know his or her dad.
He would never be able to take them to the park or teach them to ride a bike. Mac knew all about parents missing out on their kids’ lives. He promised that no matter how things turned out between him and Marcy if they had a kid he would be there for them. His kids would always know their daddy loved them.
“This sucks,” Twitch said, his voice raw with emotion.
Mac cleared his throat, nodding his agreement. He felt Marcy’s small hand on his back and relaxed marginally.
“I'm so sorry, Casey,” he said choked up.
She looked up as if in a daze and smiled sadly at them.
“Mac, really? It's not your fault. He loved you guys like brothers,” she replied, sad.
“We love him too. If you ever need anything don't hesitate to ask,” Griffin said sadly.
Mac looked over at him. He hadn't even heard him walk up. He had dark circles under his eyes. It looked as if he hadn’t been sleeping much. Mac knew nobody got much sleep these days. The things they had seen fighting a fruitless war had haunted each and every one of them.
Twitch choked on a sob and walked away. Poor Casey looked like she wanted to follow him. To try to comfort him in her darkest hour. He could see the tear tracts down her cheeks.
“Don't Casey, I’ll go talk to him,” Griffin said and gave her arm a squeeze.
He walked over to Twitch and put a hand on his shoulder. Mac looked down at Marcy standing next to him looking thoughtful.
“Casey, this is Marcy, my girlfriend,” he introduced.
“Hi Marcy,” Casey said with little enthusiasm. “Andy used to talk about you all the time.”
“Hi, it's nice to finally meet you,” she replied, distracted.
He didn't know what was up with Marcy. She had been different since they got back. She had been the only survivor to get out of the humvee that day. Mac had pulled her out just seconds before the thing exploded and knocked Twitch unconscious. If she had moved just an inch to the left, she’d be dead right now. If the shrapnel that pierced her arm had been an inch to the right, she would be an amputee.
She was given medical leave and decided not to re-enlist so she was home much sooner than the rest of them. He was trying to be supportive but he could feel her pulling away. He didn't want that. He had attempted to get her to talk to a counselor to no avail. She was strong willed and wouldn't do anything until she was ready.
The minister walked up and the guys all stood at attention. Mac patted Casey’s arm and moved to the group of soldiers. All his brothers, who had been there the day Andy died.
The service was beautiful. The minister told stories about Andy that made them laugh through their collective tears. He even shed a tear for his friend. The moment he and Twitch moved forward to fold the flag was one of the hardest in his adult life. He was unable to contain the waves of emotion as he folded the flag and tucked the end.
He handed the flag to Twitch who took it to the front row and handed it over to a sobbing Casey. He whispered something to her and kissed her cheek before straightening and joining them for the twenty-one gun salute.
The sounds of the shots being fired were like a balm on his skin. They were comforting. He knew they were sending their brother off properly and he couldn't be any more pleased that he was able to be a part of it.
