Denizen (den13) | 1138 comments I debated whether I should count this as foreign literature but had already decided that I wanted to explore more Australian lit this year. Susie and another Australian GR friend have made me realize that it is a neglected area in my reading. A.S. Patric was born in Serbia and immigrated to Australia as a child so this work is not translated.

Black Rock White City is a well written novel about two Serbian refugees attempting to rebuild their lives and their relationship in Australia in spite of the emotional damage they sustained during the Yugoslav wars. Jovan, previously a professor and poet in Sarajevo, has found work as a hospital janitor while his wife, Suzana cleans homes. Jovan is responsible for cleaning up graffiti written by an unknown person which gradually escalates into violence.

The novel is powerfully written, mildly suspenseful, and heart rending with well-developed characters. I highly recommend this Miles Franklin winner.

Tien (tiensblurb) | 717 comments I'm glad you enjoyed this book, Denizen. This book surprised me by how much I really enjoyed the reading; I didn't think I would... I'm not too literary but this one was good :)

It's literary but not too pretentious. Paced well I thought.
