2017: What are you reading?
A Virtuous Death by Christine Trent, 3rd in the Lady of Ashes mystery books. Historical fiction with woman undertaker Violet Harper. Enjoying the series.
A God in Ruins by Kate Atkinson is another mind-twisting 'family history' that takes place during, between, and after World Wars One and Two. My review:

I've just completed The Agony and the Ecstasy by Irving Stone. A triumph for Irving Stone and a great memorial to the life and genius of Michelangelo. Five stars.
I'mNow for a complete change I'm reading Diary of a Provincial Lady by EM Delafield. It's very amusing and one can identify with the situations.
I finished reading The Catcher in the Ryeset in New York City in the 1940's, which I rated 3 stars and reviewed.

I am reading
It is a Gothic Romance Suspense. I haven't read a Gothic novel in year. My mother used to like Victoria Holt. I have liked Anna Lee Huber's other books so I thought I would try this one.
I started reading The Count of Monte Cristo for the first time. Enjoying it way more than I thought I would!
It's not historical fiction but it's a darn good read!
Columbine – Dave Cullen – 4****
Gripping, fascinating, and horrifying. Cullen has done extensive research and made every effort to remain an impartial journalist, ferreting out facts and revealing them without judgment. The result is perhaps even more disturbing than what I thought I knew about it.

I am re-rereading The Killer Angels byMichael Shaara which lets you into the decision making by confederate generals and the experience of the Battle of Gettysburg on the ground as well as ideological conflicts that fuel the Civil War. The history is not just a distant setting to a story. The author wanted to take you there, into Gettysburg.

I am reading The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America's Shining WomenOutstanding read. How horrible it must have been for those women
Just started The Beacon at Alexandria by Gillian Bradshaw. Has been on my shelf at home for MANY years. Enjoying it thus far.
Finished all 9 of the Laurie R. King Holmes/Russell novels that I own. Now into Mary Shelley's The Last Man. Slow opening -- 75pp in and no sign off the plague yet. However, I persist...

Their story sure sounds awful, Alice. I worry today about the people in China putting together ur smartphones, exposed to who-knows-what. But it's not quite as bad as what the Radium Girls had to deal with.
While I don't agree that Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, I certainly enjoyed watching her awkward attempts to accept and be accepted. My review:

I just started In The Name of the Family by Sarah Dunant - about the final years of the Borgias. Beautiful writing.
Completed
Dreaming the Eagle and started book two of the four book series,
Dreaming the Bull. Rome has arrived in Britain, circa 39/40 AD.
Finished Kerri Maniscalco's Stalking Jack the Ripper this morning and I can't wait for book two in September!!
I'm reading A Certain Ageby Beatriz Williams, which is my second book by here.I'm also about 30 pages from finishing Mrs. Poe by Lynn Cullen for my book group. We're discussing it Monday.
I read The Gaze, which is set mostly in Istambul (in 1999 and 1980), but also in Pera (19th century), Siberia (17th century), and France (19th century). I rated 3 stars and reviewed it.
Farwell My Lovely – Raymond Chandler – 3***
I came late to Chandler’s series about P.I. Philip Marlowe, but I sure am enjoying them now! The action is non-stop, and the characters so vivid they virtually jump off the page. I’ll definitely keep reading the series.

I haven't read any of his either. Will have to take a look.
This is not a thriller, but it's certainly historical fiction. One for fans of Charles Dickens. I reckon he'd have been an activist blogger if he'd been around today. My review of Select Short Fiction

I just started
by Tessa Harris. Very interesting the early examples of understanding the human body. Set in England 1780
I am reading The Blue Between Sky and Water by Susan Abulhawa, which tells the story of Palestinians in Gaza starting in 1948, over a couple of generations. Also reading Another Country by James Baldwin, which takes place in the late 1950s. It was contemporary when written, but is historical now.
Alice wrote: "I just started

I am currently reading quite a lot of books at the moment due to the size of one ( I don't particularly want to lug it around me when I commute to work...it could be used as a weapon lol not that I would) anyway am reading the second novel in the Seven Sisters series The Storm Sister by Lucinda Riley and wow its as good as if not even better than the previous novel. I am also reading Sisters of Treason by Elizabeth Fremantle really good Tudor period atmosphere with a lot of scandal and intrigue and the other one is by the same author Watch the Lady love them all.
Just read this chicklitty mystery. The Golden Hour by T. Greenwood.

Dragon Springs Road--I already had this on my TBR, but I'm doing some co-events with Janie Chang next week, and that bumped it to the top of the list. It is AWESOME so far!
Finished Mary Shelley's The Last Man. Not quite what I was expecting, but good. Now back to Laurie R. King, The God of the Hive
Formidable 'Nubian Queen, Thug Mama' Liza Jessie Peterson writes a powerful account: All Day: A Year of Love and Survival Teaching Incarcerated Kids at Rikers Island

I am reading a good book set in 1667, Restoration England
Very good series and that are not that many books in that time period
My favorite restoration England novel is Forever Amber. Like Gone with the Wind, but with Cavaliers and plague :)
