Review:

Another great Mercy book! This is my second read and it's just as good as the first! (this could simply be due to my horrible memory - I had forgotten a lot of what happened.

First I want to say that partway through the book my eye began bothering me so I switched to the audio version my library thankfully had available - a small thing like an eye infection isn't going to stop me from reading; and I was pleasantly surprised to discover was narrated by Lorelei King. King narrated the Charley Davidson series (First Grave on the Right) and is amazing! She really pulls off snarky, heroine characters. Although I did think she did a better job with Charley's series, but that could just be because I listened to that first.

Moving on to the actual plot. This wasn't the most action packed of the series. In fact, I thought it moved rather slow until the end. But, it is a very important book for the series.

It takes place immediately following the aftermath of the last book and through out it we witness Mercy overcomes the trauma she just experienced. I love that Briggs didn't just write off her recovery time. Her recovery could have easily have happened in-between books, but I'm glad it was written in. In fact, while Mercy does overcome and fight through what was done for her, she never fully recovers. And as bad as it sounds, I like that fact becomes it makes her feel all the more real.

The most important thing to happen in this book was Mercy officially becoming Adams mate and entering the pack. I actually think this is a big turning point for the series and it was exciting to reread how it occurred.

Lastly, the main baddie in this was a Monster Vampier who turned out to be a great villain. I thought it took awhile for the story to work up to him, but it paid off in the end.

Sidenote: The walking staff is, weirdly, one of my favorite characters.

I have not forgotten about choosing a book for this week (okay, I did forget), but I will have a book I can read quickly by tomorrow. And I actually mean tomorrow this time. Lately when I've said that the reality was 2-3 days later - I'm trying to dig myself out of the lazy rut I seem to have fallen into.

Magic Rises by Ilona Andrews
Magic Rises (Kate Daniels, #6) by Ilona Andrews

Read: 03.30.17
Rating: 5 stars
Review:

I spun the spear.

The children of shapeshifters often don't make it to adulthood. This fact hits very close to home when Julie's best friend begins going loup. There is a medicine but it is in short supply. There is one dose available and the mother must choose which of her twins receives it. A decision is made to divide it. One twin recovers. One does not. Kate asks Dr. Doolittle to keep Maddie sedated until a cure can be found. Curran has been asked to protect a pregnant shifter in exchange for the panacea. The only trouble is that he and his team must travel to Georgia on the Black Sea. Curran gathers a team knowing that he is walking into a trap.

Desandra is pregnant with twins that have different fathers. Her father has offered a mountain pass in the Carpathian mountains to the sire of the first born. Curran's task is to keep her safe until the birth. A difficult situation since no one seems to care whether or not Desandra lives or dies.

Saiman owes Kate a favor and she requests the use of one of his ships for passage to Colchis. This leaves the group in a bad situation as well since Saiman is not trustworthy.

Arrival in Colchis is almost thwarted by pirates which are not aware of the power of their intended target. The castle provides even more obstacles as the occupants includes shifters which are intent upon killing Kate. The introduction of Lorelei, a spoiled wolf princess, creates a huge problem for Curran and Kate.

The "human" lord of the castle goes by the family name of Megobari but is soon revealed to be Kate's number two nemesis, just behind her father, Roland.

Oh my word! This is another book that I started late one evening and spent the entire night reading. Who needs sleep anyway? The sheer angst that Kate feels because of Lorelei is heartbreaking. Everything about her makes Kate question her relationship with Curran. One of my favorite quotes came early in the book from Curran as the crew is walking to the castle:

"We just got here, baby. It's too early for you to start killing people."

No one is to be trusted in the castle. The shifters are all out for blood, preferably Kate's. Desandra is treated as a incubator. Her family has no concern for her health an well being. Then the castle is attacked by a shifter form that even Dr. Doolittle doesn't know what it is.

The fight scenes were amazing. I love seeing how Kate can take care of herself. Curran is no slouch either. The introduction of the little man and the shepherd was an interesting read. So much history and clues for the coming battle.

Curran almost lost his book boyfriend card in this book. I knew that there was a plan but I still wanted to throttle him. He was little to comfortable in his role and cause a lot of heartache for Kate. Bad Beast Lord!

This series gets better with each book. I am still a couple of books behind so I have something to look forward to. Perhaps I should read them on a weekend rather than the night before I have a busy day at work because I know that I can't put them down.

A highly recommended series!

Review:

Simon Wolfguard, leader of the Lakeside Courtyard, stared at his bedroom ceiling, the words of warning, of threat, chasing away sleep, as they had for the past few nights.

Nicholas Scratch's Humans First and Last (HFL) group has poked the proverbial bear. The continued attacks are stirring up more than he can imagine. Simon enlists Meg's help in finding what her human female pack feels is the necessary to make one human and what is needed to survive.

Simon has evolved so much since the first book in the series. (Although he does want to eat the bunny that Meg thinks is cute) His relationship with Meg remains platonic but there is a glimmer of hope at the end of the book that perhaps that will change in the final installment.

The story spreads out more and envelopes more communities. I missed the sense of belonging in Lakeside Courtyard. The addition of characters and locations had me rereading a bit. It did not distract from the overall telling of the story.

The terra indigene and the Elementals are joined by older and more intense entities that should stop HFL in their tracts. I so wanted to yell at the humans who were so stupid to think that they could win over ancients.

Lakeside Courtyard continues to be an almost neutral territory where humans and the Others coexist. Simon and Meg's relationship seems to keep the community centered.

The classic battle of good versus evil was slightly blurred by the fundamental stupidity of HFL. I felt a little guilty cheering for them to be demolished. Again, we see current events portrayed in the story (hate crimes, the green movement to name a couple) that make you stop and think.

I would have thought that this book was tying up loose ends had I not known that there is another book in the series.

This is another series that I start reading and read straight through. Thankfully it was the weekend and I could savor it.

A highly recommended series!

Archangel's Heart (Guild Hunter, #9) by Nalini Singh
Book: Archangel's Heart by Nalini Singh
Date Read: 4-4-17
Rating: 4 and 1/2 stars
Review: I was hesitant going into this book as it was refocusing on Elena and Raphael. While I enjoy this couple a lot, I have immensely enjoyed the books featuring other couples and worried that this entry might feel like taking a step backward. By the first ten percent, I knew I was dead wrong...Archangel's Heart completely sucked me in and reminded me of why I should NEVER doubt Nalini Singh. This woman is one hell of a story teller!! Although this book is definitely "quieter" in tone compared to some previous stories in the series, it still packed quite the punch.

Elena and Raphael have spent the past two years since Lijuan's disappearance and the beginning of the Cascade waiting for the other shoe to drop. Things have been quiet, too quiet. As if to underscore their perception, a Cadre of all the Archangels is called to Lumia, the sanctuary of a group of Angels called the Luminata. Getting all of the Archangel's together in one place is dangerous for many reasons, not least of which is the sheer power they hold. With many tensions running through the group, the meeting promises to be difficult, frustrating and the perfect setting for private agendas and possible back stabbings.

Elena, Aodhan and Raphael make the journey to Lumia and soon discover that things are not right within the "brotherhood." With Raphael dealing with Cadre doings, Elena and Aodhan focus on the Luminata as well as searching for clues to Elena's past which seems to be connected to Lumia and the Luminata as well.

While the previous several books have had more explosive plot lines, this book proved that a quieter tone could provide just as much tension. I was on the edge of my seat the last third of the book as multiple plot threads began weaving together ever more tightly to create one heck of a rush at the end of the book. With the introduction of two more wonderful characters that I cannot wait to know more about (Ibrahim and Laric) and the peeling away of more of Aodhan's layers, with the added bonus of the further evolution of Elena and Raphael's relationships, the characterizations in this book were on point. (And the main baddie was uber creepy in a way that was slick and oily and oh-so-love-to-hate-him!) All in all, another amazing addition to a series that is one of my top favorites. I am so thankful that I don't have too long to wait until Viper's story, but I am going to miss my book-almost-every-week pacing that I have been enjoying up to this point...however, maybe this means I can get caught up on the Psy-Changling series!

Deep Redemption (Hades Hangmen, #4) by Tillie Cole
Book:
Deep Redemption by Tillie Cole
Page Number: 320
Read: 4/4
Rating & Review: ✯✯✯✯
I have been looking forward to this book since books 1&2 because I love a good redemption story. I wanted to see how the author would redeem Ryder (Cain) after his betrayal of the Hades Hangmen and his friendship to Mae.

In his book, Cain was made to suffer at the hands of those he valued the most and his twin was truly a egoistical sociopath. Religion was a front for his sexual perversion and I was so disgusted.

I can't say that I am completely sold on Ryder/Cain but I accept his repudiation of the religious cult and their false doctrine. I also accept this new man but the girls suffered a lot when Cain kidnapped Mae and the other "cursed ones".

I'm happy he got Harmony/Bella away from the fate that awaited her with Judah. This book was tough to listen to but still not as tough as book 3.

I must add that I didn't enjoy the narrator much. His voice didn't match what I expected for a bad ass biker gang. So that affected my enjoyment. I hope a new guy is hired for book 5, which I can't wait for.

Lords and Ladies (Discworld, #14; Witches #4) by Terry Pratchett
Lords and Ladies by Terry Pratchett

Qualification:page 85 of shelf
Rating: 5 stars
Review:

Discworld books are always fun reads and this one doesn't disappoint. The Witches are some of my favorite characters and it's a close call, but this may be my favorite book of theirs (so far).

The story follows a loose parody of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Nights Dream, with a few other Shakespearean references thrown in (like a Taming of the Shrew and an unsuccessful St Crispins Day speech).

In the story, Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg attempt to stop the recently awakened Elves (aka Fair Folk, aka Lords and Ladies) from taking over the kingdom of Lancre. Meanwhile, Magrat is kept in the dark as she prepares to marry Verence, the king and former fool. Ridcully, the Archancellor of the a Unseen University, also arrives with the Librarian for the wedding and renews his pursuit of the girl that got away , aka Granny Weatherwax!!

I'm not sure what I can say in a review that will do this book justice, it was simply fun. Entertainment at its purest. And wrapped in all that hilarity and hijinks was some serious character development for the witches. Particularly Magrat who became pretty badass in the end. (Although Granny still holds the badass witch title :)

I also really loved Shawn and Jason Ogg, two of Nanny's sons. They were great supporting characters and I especially loved Nanny's interactions with them.

Overall, I think the Discworld books have improved with each book and at #14 I'm still discovering new favorites.

Shield of Winter (Psy-Changeling, #13) by Nalini Singh
Book: Shield of Winter by Nalini Singh
Date Read: 4-6-17
Rating: 4 and 1/2 stars
Review: Wow! This entry in the Psy-Changling world jumps right in, grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go until the very last word! It had been awhile since I had read Heart of Obsidian (March of 2016 to be exact) and I worried that I wouldn't remember enough to enjoy this entry...nope. Nalini Singh masterfully immersed me fully into the current world of humans, Changlings and Psy with enough backstory to keep me reading confusion free.

The Psy have broken Silence but an infection is spreading through the net resulting in Psy literally going insane, very violently so. Children, neighbors, passersby--all are in the line of fire when these outbreaks occur resulting in mass casualties, including the infected Psy who either die immediately or after being put into comas...a solution, a cure, a hope is needed desperately and it is within the E designation that Kaleb Krychek and the Arrows look for the saving of their race. The E's (Empaths) have long been denied, suppressed and at times determinedly killed and many live knowing that something is wrong in their fractured silence but to admit it until recently meant rehabilitation at best. Even now, a societal taboo exists among many Psy regarding the E designation. The choice to bring in ten E-Psy, each assigned an Arrow for their protection, to try to combat the infection is regarded as radical but time is running out...

Ivy Jane is one of the E Psy brought in...her silence fractured at 16 and she was rehabilitated in a way that violated her mind and tortured her body causing her entire family to flee "underground" (they couldn't leave the Net entirely, but they did everything they could to be overlooked). Assigned to Ivy Jane is Vasic, an Arrow with so much blood on his hands that he knows he is beyond saving. The betrayal of the man he faithfully served was the last straw in a long line of harsh blows in his life. Protecting others is built into his very bones and his best friend believes this assignment may be the only way to keep Vasic going.

Watching Ivy Jane grow into the emotions she was always meant to embrace was beautiful, but watching her slowly (oh-so-slowly) breech Vasic's emotionless exterior to discover the "real" man beneath was stunning. Vasic reminded me a lot of Judd, a comparison that Nalini supports through the story in many ways as well, and seeing Vasic echo who Judd had been alongside who Judd is now was the very best definition of hope for the reader and for Ivy Jane herself.

As if saving the entire Psy race isn't enough of a task, it is found that Vasic's experimental excursion into biocomputronics is threatening his life and that he has a very limited amount of time left...the only man who could potentially save him is thought to be dead. Add in fanatical Psy who still believe that Silence is the best option and who may or may not target the E's in their bid to keep the status quo and tensions are high through much of the book...and yet, sprinkled liberally throughout were these amazing scenes between Ivy Jane and Vasic that made my heart so happy!

Ivy Jane and Vasic are going down as one of my favorite couples in the Psy-Changling series. I was so pleased that the solution(s) to the problems at hand were thoughful and never seemed too easy or manufactured out of thin air...the toll on everyone emotionally, mentally and physically was high but there was also enough hope and love throughout to leave me with the very-much-needed happy ending. Another masterful book by Nalini Singh!

Review:

Sleeping with my therapist was a bad idea.

Georgina has been a very bad girl since we last saw her. She is now dating Dante, drinking way too much, smoking and having sex with just about anything that moves. Jerome has had about enough of her and "loans" her to Cedric in Vancouver. Her job is to spy on Cedric and try to rein in a group of Satanists that are being a general nuisance. In the midst of her travels, Jerome is summoned and Seattle's immortals lose their powers/abilities.

The last book in the series broke my heart. I was hoping that things would change in this one although I knew it wasn't really possible. There is a glimmer of hope when Georgina loses her wiles and must function as a human. Her interaction with Seth is so bittersweet. I truly don't know how she continues to work with Maddie after everything that has happened.

This book is filled with angst and betrayal and sucked me in from the first page. I read it straight through because I couldn't put it down until I knew what was going to happen. The ending may be an omen that Georgina's dreams from the last book could come true. Here's hoping that Georgina's contract can be reversed. There are two more books in the series. I need to read them ASAP so that my heart can mend.

An excellent addition to the series!

Review: Meh. After being so excited to finally begin this series that has been on my radar for such a long time, I felt absolutely let down throughout the reading of it. In fact, at one point I DNF'd it but couldn't really find anything else on the list that was really calling me that was also currently available at my library. Resigned to finishing it, I went to the Goodreads reviews to see why others liked it so well and discovered the secret to making this book tolerable (barely). Pretend it is an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

So, I did. Cat became Buffy and Bones became Spike. It worked to a certain degree. Cat came off as so very young to me (granted. it has been a while since I was 24) but picturing her as a high schooler made her immaturity more reasonable. Bones and his English style of speaking morphed easily into a lovable Spike and so I read on...

And continued to want to quit. I found my mind wandering, my eyes skimming text and I would forcibly make myself tune back in but it was a real chore. The entire tone of this book was a miss for me. What I am sure is supposed to be a cutesy-first-person-narrative to show the personal growth and transition from lucky, rather hapless vampire killer to ruthless, bad-ass vampire hunter was just annoying. Bones, who I am sure was supposed to be uber sexy and mysterious was outclassed by other romance heros I have read recently (Naasir, Raphael, Vasic, Adan...). This book has a real following, my friend Laura is a fan and I absolutely trust her taste in books. But it wasn't for me.

Part of it was most likely my fault...after I had DNF'd it, I never really went back into with an open mind so I was probably looking for faults more than I was looking for redemption...but I also believe that it had every chance to suck me in and it didn't. I'm sad that such a popular series had such a weak opening entry that was not to my taste, but I have never been lacking a large TBR pile so I am confident that I will have plenty of wonderful books to read in the days to come.

I listened to the book and I like new adult but I generally like angst and plot without copious amount of sex.

I found Tatum to be too whiny in the beginning. It took awhile for her to stand her ground. Then Tate finally learned why Jared was a jerk (which pissed me off by the way) and it seemed like she caved so easily.

I just didn't connect with them. I also didn't connect with the authors writing style. The narrator is one that I don't enjoy so that was another issue. She sounded like some breathy seductress reading this book and it grates on my nerves.

Review:

Sometimes there are books everyone raves about that turn out to be disappointing; and other times they are amazing and I kick myself for not reading them sooner. This book is definitely the latter. I can't believe I waited so long!!

The main story follows Meg Corbyn, a Cassandra Sangue or blood prophet, who escapes the compound she was held and forced to produce prophecies to the highest bidder. She escapes to a nearby Courtyard, where the Others reside and human law is not applied. The Others are native shifters, vampires, and elementals who rent out the land to humans, causing terror in their wake. Meg manages to get a job from the local Courtyards leader, Sam Wolfgard, as a human liaison.

I loved Meg's character. As a Cassandra Sangue she was raised in a compound, separated from human society and only taught the most basic human things - mostly through images and sounds that allow her to recognize what she sees in her prophecies (caused buy cutting her skin till it bleeds and scars). Because of this she is very innocent about the world. She is also a naturally sweet and caring person, but one with sharp intelligence and backbone. She has great instincts and knows when to act on them, even if she doesn't fully understand why.

I say all this because I find that many female characters described as "sweet" or "innocent" are really just bubbly idiots. Meg is not that at all and is in fact a pretty complex character that makes a great protagonist.

I also really loved her interactions with Sam Wolfgard, the primary male protagonist, as well as the rest of the Others.

I did find the overarching story-line, humans trying to infiltrate the Courtyard to cause harm to the Others and capture Meg, to be a bit slow to develop - most of the novel being dedicated to Meg learning how to live in the Others community. However, the world is so complex that I didn't mind. This is the first book so it takes awhile for the world and characters to be set up and I'm glad the author put aside so much time for it. It could have easily gotten cluttered and confusing with a fast paced plot added to the mix. The plot developments that were there, did keep the novel going, albeit at a slower pace, and concluded in a pretty great battle scene.

Overall, loved the novel and excited to continue on with the series.

I found it on page one of the shelf.

I'm behind in reading this for another challenge so it works out well.
