Completion Post: Free Space BookBook Read: Widdershins by Jordan L. Hawk from the Group's Bookshelf

Rating: 4 stars
Review: If I had listened to someone tell me what this book was about, I would probably never have read it. I tend to not enjoy 1st person narratives (although I finding more and more exceptions to that rule) nor do I usually enjoy historical romances of the m/m variety because I hate the angst caused by the fact that it was illegal and often punishable by death. In addition, the occult is not generally a topic of interest for me. And yet, I really enjoyed this book which didn't shy away from any of the above. Whyborne was an amazing narrator who definitely had a rather one-sided view about certain topics (chief among them his own worth as a person) and yet through dialogue and his observations of others I was quickly able to get the sense of how others didn't always agree. I loved that his secretary has a crush on him and he has no idea. Jordan L. Hawk does NOT take it easy on his characters either...he is not afraid to make them flawed or to put them through very difficult challenges to shape the people they are. Whyborne's losing of a beloved friend when young and Griffin's extremely tough time from a past case were difficult to read about as were the lingering issues left behind from such life altering events and yet it was precisely because of this that I became so invested in the characters and their lives...and their futures both individual and entwined. Add in a great secondary character in Christine and some less great characters such as Bradley who are oh-so-throttle-able and yet necessary to round out the balance and this book was excellent from start to finish.
Ezi and Moondance, as the veteran's of Bingo would you let me know if I need to make any changes to my completion post? I am particularly interested in any recommendations you have to improve my review...I tried to find a bingo review example and couldn't. Thanks so much!

Elaine, you discussed things you liked about the book in a way that caught my interest. There are reviews in the Archives of Bingo if you want to go back a bit to take a peek.
You can also go to either of our profiles to look at reviews.

I've read all of the Patricia Briggs Alpha & Omega and the Meecy T series as well as Ilona Andrews Kate DanielI did see The Edge which I haven't read all yet.
I was hoping to read
but I didn't see it on the list though the other Midnight Breeds are on there :(
Lol, I was actually listening to Steel's Edge by Ilona Andrews when I wrote that. Probably why I got the authors confused

Review: Wow!! This book was intense and I loved it! Elena is on my list of all time fave heroines now...this woman is amazing! Raphael is one sexy leading man, er, archangel (not to mention pretty freaking scary at times). Nalini Singh is a master at creating new worlds and I can't wait to learn more about this one in later books. The characters--oh man...so many characters and yet they were easy to keep track of and differentiate from each other which is saying something. And the range of personalities, talents, levels of sanity/insanity...the richness of detail that was in this book while still maintaining a tight focus on the main story line was surreal. And I dare anyone not to want to immediately dive right into book #2 as soon as they close this book. Just wow!!
You could read #2 for Free Space if you want to Elaine, its on the Group bookshelves.Glad you liked it, its one of my favs too :)
Victoria wrote: "When do we need to have the free space finished by?"There is no set time, but your team won't receive the stamp till everyone has read, rated & reviewed their books.
So peer pressure ......
lol, that's what I was thinking, but wanted to make sure. I'll read it soon regardless since I only have a week left on my library loan.

I'm almost finished with my Hunter book. But, I almost don't want to read it. I'm not enjoying it nearly as much as I hoped/thought.

I thought the first book was good, not the best, but did a great job setting up the series. I therefore expected this one to really take the series off, but it turned out to be just meh (for lack of a better word).
This story takes place 4 years after Cat leaves Bones and joins the FBI's special task force to hunt vampires. The first half of the book updates the reader on what Cat did during those 4 years and what she's doing now. And then her getting back together with Bones. While all this was probably necessary, a lot of it felt like a summary of events than an actual plot or story line. Although, her getting back together with Bones was probably the highlight of the book.
Finally, things unfold when a mysterious somebody tries to kill Cat. Now we have a mystery to solve and action with a purpose. Sadly, even that was yawn worthy. Don't get me wrong, there was a lot of action and sexiness. But, it was so littered with jealousies and cattiness from nearly every character that I couldn't focus on what was actually going on.
The ending did pick things up a bit, however, which is why I rounded this up to 3 stars. But, I'm still not sure if I will continue with this series. I will likely only do so if the subsequent books happen to fit specific reading challenges.

I have just downloaded book one on my Kindle...it's a bummer to hear that this book let you down. I have heard that Cat and Bones are one of the great romantic couples of UF so maybe later books make up for a lackluster beginning?
I thought the first book was pretty good so it's worth checking out. And others seemed to really like the second, so maybe it's just me. I haven't completely given up on the series, but I'm in no rush to finish it.

Review:
Hydras have a distinctive odor.
Gretchen hunts monsters that are straight out of Greek mythology. Each monster has a different smell that Gretchen can easily pick up. Her mentor, Ursula, trained her after finding Gretchen living on the streets. She is a descendant of Medusa who according to Ursula was a misunderstood guardian bad mouthed by Athena. The rule has always been that the monsters slipped through a gap one at a time and the bite from the huntress will send them back. Now monsters are appearing more frequently and Gretchen is concerned.
Enter Grace. Grace and her family have recently moved to San Francisco and she begins to see monsters. We quickly learn that she and Gretchen were separated at birth to protect them. Grace is an awkward eco-friendly teen that just wants to excel at her new school. Grace is fascinated when she meets Gretchen and learns of her true lineage. She begins to train with Gretchen to hunt as well.
Enter Greer. Yes, there are three of them rather than twins. Greer has no idea that she is adopted. She is high society and is repulsed by her siblings appearance. Her family sent her to therapy to stop her from seeing the monsters.
Then we have the male characters, Thane, Nick and Milo. Thane is Grace's brother who is also adopted. Still waters definitely run deep with him. Nick is Gretchen's thorn in her side. He will not give up trying to get her attention. It makes you wonder if he is involved with hunting as well. Milo is Thane's new friend and Grace's crush. I don't think that he plays into the hunting but time may tell.
This was an enjoyable read. The mythology is presented well and the alternate reality of Medusa is interesting. I feel that Thane and Nick are not exactly what they seem. The characters are well thought out and the world building is believable. I will continue reading the series to see where the story goes. Probably more of a 3.5 rating than the GR allowed 3.

WOW. only 3 stars. I thought the first 4 books in this series was epic. I am speechless
It wasn't bad and had a lot of things I normally love, but this one just didn't do it for me. A lot of it was due to being bored from the lack of Bones in the beginning and annoyance over the petty jealousies displayed by Tate and later Annette. Tate especially annoyed me and I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more without him.

Stryker wanted revenge against Acheron & Nick for the death of his son so he releases Aries, the god of war and bargains for Aries to kill Ach & Nick.
To thwart Stryker, Artemis enlists the Zephyra, Stryker's ex-wife to stop Stryker's plan. So now the ex lovers are on a collision course to fight it out, along with their personal issues.
This series is iffy for me but this book was one of the good ones. I didn't enjoy Acheron as much as others, but this one was enjoyable. We get to see how Artemis and Apollo have manipulated the hunters over hundreds of years. What I enjoyed most is the complexity of Stryker as a character. I wouldn't call him a super good hero, but he isn't a bad guy either. He is what the gods made him and I found that I like him as a protagnoist.
The couple had great chemisty and I am glad that the love was restored for Stryker and Phyra. I think I will get back to this series now.
