Unlike Jeanette Winterson's Christmas Days collection that I just reviewed, this book was the opposite of uplifting. Drifting House is a book of short stories focused on the immigrant experience of Koreans (some set in America and others in Korea -- both North and South). The stories are united by general themes of isolation and alienation. They are heavy and difficult stories. Many feature women protagonists who feel hopeless and alone.

The book was interesting in its focus on the immigrant experience but it was challenging to read b/c it was very dark and depressing and includes heavy topics like incest and domestic abuse. These aren't presented in graphic detail but are present nevertheless.
