No, no, no WAY RA. Please don't post any more lyrics like that. Please.

Otherwise I'll retitle this "lyrics thread" and stop checking in.

Loathe Weird Al.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I could just as easily say, Heather, Cobain has better lyrics to you. But that doesn't mean Cobain was "first band of any generation to give a voice to teen malaise." To me, anyway, that's indefensible. As for that "female" part, I'm fairly sure your generation contained males, too. I'm fairly sure you can't speak for every teen through history.

Where's Gus? Gus, help me out here. Tadpole? I forgot about Black Flag.

Jealous cowards try to control
Rise above
Were gonna rise above
They distort what we say
Rise above
Were gonna rise above
Try and stop what we do
Rise above
When they cant do it themselves

We are tired of your abuse
Try to stop us its no use

Societys arms of control
Rise above
Were gonna rise above
Think theyre smart
Cant think for themselves
Rise above
Were gonna rise above
Laugh at us
Behind our backs
I find satisfaction
In what they lack

We are tired of your abuse
Try to stop us its no use

We are born with a chance
Rise above
Were gonna rise above
I am gonna have my chance
Rise above
Were gonna rise above

We are tired of your abuse
Try to stop us its no use

Rise above
Rise above
Rise above
Were gonna rise above
Were gonna rise above
Were gonna rise above

I better stop. I'm gonna go Jack Black in Hi Fidelity.

PS: I one said "I'd be loathe to..." and then trailed off with a client when I was a hairdresser.

what the word

Again, point me to a teenager that sits alone in his or her room thinking about how he or she doesn't give his or her elders proper respect. Not many. Teens worry about the suckage of their parents for not giving them the respect they feel they are due. They worry about being mocked, ridiculed, girls/boys, drugs, etc.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Sally, you loathe Weird Al? Even "White and Nerdy"?

Yes. *shudder*

But Sweeter adores him. I endured 1/2 a week with "Fat" after the passing of MJ. This of course was interspersed with nonstop "Thriller".

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments What does that have to do with The Replacements? I disagree strongly with the characterizations of teen as one discreet group, Heather.

Talkin' about the girls/boys thing, The Smiths were huge on the loneliness end for me in high school, as were Joy Division...

Hey, you can like Nirvana all you want. But there are a lot of great bands out there...

I'll stop! I promise!

You're right, I can't speak for everyone of my generation, but Smells like teen spirit applies regardless of whether or not you are male or female, a song about being drafted does not. Which was the point I was trying to make.

I'm not saying that there aren't great bands that came before RA. I'm saying that for my generation, Nirvana was the first band to strike that particular chord. For you and your generation, the Replacements might have epitomized teen angst, but it didn't for my generation. That title holder belongs to Nirvana. Times changes, the way a song resonates changes with it.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Randomanthony wrote: "What's this drafted thing you keep talkin' about?"

Wasn't in reference to a Ramones song?

message 171: by Lori (new)

Lori Ahhhh, The Clash.

I love Heidi's list of poet/musicians.

OK carry on, because I'm completely out of the loop for bands like Nirvana, Jane's Addiction, etc. Never even heard of Joy Division. *sigh*

Heather (heatherjoy) | 384 comments Randomanthony wrote: "What's this drafted thing you keep talkin' about?"

I was referring to Let's Go by the Ramones. Talkin about war, which many teens do not care about today. Sorry if I'm generalising, but I'm willing to bet money on this one.

I can agree with this, but I'd take out "first" and replace it with "most popular" or even "iconic".

See? We're makin' progress, Heather:)

message 174: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Oh. She was talking about Blitzkrieg Bop, I think, but calling it "Let's Go".

message 175: by Heather (new)

Heather (heatherjoy) | 384 comments First is staying RA, and for this reason. Nirvana was the first band of my generation to give voice to our thoughts and emotions. Were they the first band ever to be the voice of their generation, no, but they were the first in mine.

message 176: by RandomAnthony (last edited Jul 31, 2009 12:25PM) (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I disagree. There are other questions that emerge to qualify your assertion, as to bands that weren't as popular but preceded Nirvana (since you said "first"), when your generation started/ended, etc. But we will have to disagree:) I do appreciate you sticking to your guns, even if we disagree.

message 177: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments OMG, I forgot about Stevie Nicks!!! She was a superb lyricists!

And I have Joan Jett on the brain now because she's so rock & roll to me. I can't wait for The Misfits movie. *sigh* :)

message 178: by Heather (new)

Heather (heatherjoy) | 384 comments I'm a stubborn mule, so sticking to my guns is almost always garunteed.

With that said, this debate was fun.

At any rate, Kurt earned his place as the leader of a movement as do the Relacements. I would say that the Ramones are underrated, but they are partly to blame. There is no denying they have good lyrics, but the istrumentation doesn't do them justice, imo...

Wowza. Talk about a loaded statement.

message 181: by Heather (new)

Heather (heatherjoy) | 384 comments Another question, don't you think mass appeal is required to claim that your band led a movement? Even if there were bands that had similarities to Nirvana, Nirvana was the one that appealed to the masses.

message 182: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Well, first of all, I wouldn't credit one band for the emergence of grunge, if that's what we're talkin' about. But running a quick "history of grunge" search brought up a couple interesting links:

http://www.mapsofworld.com/cities/usa...

Wikipedia has a surprisingly good grunge page, too. Pay special attention to the "history" part, and what Cobain says about the Pixies.

message 184: by Heather (new)

Heather (heatherjoy) | 384 comments RA every musician/writer has inspiration, it doesn't mean that their contribution doesn't have merit. It doesn't mean that what they created isn't unique. So what if Kurt was inspired by the Pixies? I'm sure the Pixies were inspired by someone as well.

That's what's fascinating and crazy about pop music, Heather. Once it's widespread, or not, it influences a new generation or artist or songwriter, who then in turn influences the masses. It's a traceable line!
