I read this book sometime in the last 5-6 years and I'm pretty sure it was published in that same time frame. I'm also sure that it's the first book in a series of books (which I haven't read any subsequent books because I forgot the name of the first one!).

This is a long shot as I can't remember anything about a child, but how about Atrum Terra: Dark Lands?
Sounds a bit like The Passage by Justin Cronin.
Yeah, definitely sounds like The Passage. Possibly also The The Girl with All the Gifts, by MR Carey....but more likely to be The Passage.
