Tara | 52 comments How do we know if/when we get a gift via ARe? Does it just show up in the LIbrary? I'm seeing a lot of people indicating they aren't getting emails to notify them, so wondering if we have a way to know when one is given to you as a gift.

It basically just shows up in the library!

I check my library a few times a day these days and yes, if you have been given a book it will be sitting in your library waiting for you to download it :)

message 206: by Shari-amor (new)

Shari-amor | 167 comments I actually have just received (or just noticed) an email notification from ARE about gifts. It doesnt state in the heading or subject lines that it's from ARE though. It just says "(No Recipient)." the only reason I didnt erase them immediately was because in one of them I noticed in the description preview that someone addressed me by a nickname that only GR buddies use.

No wonder it goes in the junk folder automatically *snort*.
Can you post the return address? Maybe I can add it to my safe list.

right. there is actually an address from which they send. this is what it looks like: 20161129014142.9889D58047A@794456-web2.allromanceebooks.com

i don't blame email providers sending this type of mail straight to the virtual dumpster. I added it to safe senders, but I am afraid the numbers are different for every purchase. That blank space from the sender should be somehow filled.

I'd guess the numbers in front of the @ are different any time. Seems like the date you got it and some more numbers I can't identify. I've added '@794456-web2.allromanceebooks.com' to my safe senders and hope it does the trick

Have you tried writing them a message through elfster? You can write them there anonymously, too.

message 216: by Mandapanda (new)

Mandapanda I think I might make an ARe account next year. I didn't realise how many people don't use Amazon and the sales at ARe look amazing! This year it was really hard for my secret santa because all of the books I had on my list weren't available at ARe or only had Adobe epub format. I've never had any luck trying to convert Adobe. Anyway I was given a gift voucher which was wonderful but I kind of feel like that is not fair to the gifter. They don't have the fun of picking out a book they like from your wishlist. That was the most fun for me. Picking out the books that I adore from my giftee's list and imagining they would affect her as much as they affected me.

ARe helps international reader like me -- although some big publishers there only have Adobe Secure Format. There is an option of sending to Kindle, so maybe that can works for the Adobe books? I can convert them just fine though. Especially with the Rebate program and the 10-buy-get-1-free-code, buying from ARe is often my go-to choice.

M'rella (mrella) | 807 comments Does ARe work in UK?

message 221: by M'rella (new)

M'rella (mrella) | 807 comments I certainly avoid Amazon like a plague most of the times. However, every so often you run into a book that is not available anywhere else, so - no choice. I also don't mind gifts from Amazon or free books, but I am not spending my money there if I can help it.

Yes. I haven't heard of any country where it doesn't work.

message 224: by Josy (new)

Josy (aceofhearts83) | 668 comments Diane Lynch wrote: "Is it only Romance novels?"

Mostly, yes. But they have a sister site, Omni Lit, for non-romance which you can manage with the same account as ARe.

I'm on a big fantasy kick at the moment and I had quite a few mainstream fantasy novels on my wish list. I think they were pretty much all available at Omni Lit but they were only Adobe secure epub format. I will probably buy one and try a few ways to convert it just to see if it works for me.

message 227: by Josy (new)

Josy (aceofhearts83) | 668 comments With Calibre it's pretty easy to convert them but there are also online converters. See M'rella's post:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

I don't know if this works on secure epub or only on epub, though. But google is your friend, lol! I'm sure you will find something about it online.

message 228: by Ami (new)

Honestly? I have no idea. I always convert them with Calibre and then put them on my e-reader in mobi.

M'rella (mrella) | 807 comments Lisazj1 wrote: "Those secure DDRM adobe epubs that ARe sells that so many peeps are seeming to have trouble with, what types of devices can read them?"

Your best bet is with Calibre.

- Install ADE http://www.adobe.com/solutions/ebook/... on your computer if you want to manipulate files.

- Download your ARe book file. In essence, it's a "ticket" file, which gives you permission (yeah...) to download your book from ARe or B&N or whatever other seller.

- Go to ADE to open your book.

- OR go to "My Digital Files" on your hard drive and double click on URLLink.acsm file. The request will be sent to ARe and you will get your books within seconds. ADE will download your secure format file in the same folder with URLink.

- If you don't have Calibre: Install Calibre. Install DRM patches.
https://calibre-ebook.com/
http://www.epubor.com/calibre-drm-rem...

- Drag and drop you new book file to Calibre. Voila! You broke the chains of DRM down and freed your beloved treasure to read on any device in your possession! :D

Go back and erase the offending DRM-ed files out of your "My Digital Editions" folder. Unless you want to keep them, of course :)

message 233: by Josy (new)

Josy (aceofhearts83) | 668 comments Thanks, M'rella! I wasn't sure my English was good enough to explain it but that's essentially how I'm doing it as well. I think if you install ADE you have to register it and you have to use the email address you are using to buy the books at ARe or wherever. Is this right? It's been a while since I've installed it and I can't remember it anymore.

message 234: by M'rella (last edited Nov 30, 2016 12:25PM) (new)

M'rella (mrella) | 807 comments I think I registered ADE with my Barnes & Noble account. It was so long ago, I don't really remember now. But once you register it, you don't have to constantly sign in. And it doesn't discriminate against files bought elsewhere.

My primary seller is ARe. I also, on occasion, buy from B&N, Kobo and - very seldom - from Kindle. ADE works for all of them.

message 235: by Josy (new)

Josy (aceofhearts83) | 668 comments I mostly buy from Amazon and ARe and I've never had any problems with books from ARe. And yes, I don't have to sign in every time I use it although I'm not really sure what email address I used to register.

message 236: by Ami (new)

Ami (amie_07) | 342 comments I think if you install ADE you have to register it and you have to use the email address you are using to buy the books at ARe or wherever

You can install ADE and register it with one email address without having to use that email at retailers all the time. I have three Kobo accounts (yeah, three, don't look at me strangely) and I can buy from all three and open it with ADE, despite two of them don't have the same email address like my ADE account.

I have Calibre myself, but my issue is that I've seen a couple of peeps here unable to read those DDRM books from ARe. There's someone here I'd like to get something for but almost every book on their list only comes in that format. I'd hate to buy a present for someone they couldn't use. That would suck, for both of us. :/

Sigh, nope this didn't work for me. I logged into my husband's ARe account and sent me some freebies to see, and even with all the fields filled in on ARe I still got nothing on AOL. I'm thinking it's an AOL thing and not ARe though.

I tried changing some of the AOL spam filters and it gave me "system error" crap! Ya know just because one might be paranoid it does not mean no one is not out to get them...

M'rella (mrella) | 807 comments @Am4u ❀ ~ AprilMarie4u ~ ❀

Seeing how ARe's notifications get tossed by pretty much every email provider, it's an ARe issue. Just look at the shifty addresses the notifications are coming from. Not to mention "unknown address" where official AllRomance should be. I don't blame my hotmail for sending it straight to the virtual shredder.

You are soo right. I eventually got my tinkering to work on AOL. And even with no spam filter, I still got nothing when I sent myself freeibes from ARe. So def an ARe issue. Now I'm trying to figure out how to add a "safe domain" to my AOL email account, but who knows if that will even work :(

message 250: by Rachel (last edited Dec 08, 2016 09:41AM) (new)

Rachel | 40 comments I have a SS gift exchange question. Someone gifted me with books I already own (they were not in my Elfster wishlist and I marked them as "own-to-read" in my GR account).

The duplicate books just appeared in my ARe account.

I know that if this happens with Amazon, they will let you refund the books for store credit. I have been unable to determine if ARe will do the same.

Does anyone have any advice? Thanks.
